Is it me, or is speech feedback in cmd on Windows 11 not as reliable? I often get nothing at all, and have to use nvda-arrows to review what happened. NVDA's focus doesn't even move as I type. I'll issue a command and get a response, but have to nvda-arrow down to the response instead of focus following it as it should. This seems to happen more in Powershell windows than cmd, but that might not be accurate. SSH sessions seem unaffected.

And rightly so: Because #encrypted email get even more secure with #2FA and #passwordmanagers 💪

You talked about horizontal scaling. But I think it's also worth noting one hardware innovation that made horizontal scaling unnecessary in many cases, that we're perhaps starting to take for granted: fast, high-capacity flash storage, a.k.a. SSDs. David Heinemeier Hansson said in a RailsConf keynote several years ago that the Basecamp team never actually had to shard their DB thanks to SSDs.

Data Grab: The New Colonialism of Big Tech and How to Fight Back

Ulises A. Mejias and Nick Couldry

"Large technology companies like Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet have unprecedented access to our daily lives, collecting information when we check our email, count our steps, shop online, and commute to and from work. Current events are concerning—both the changing owners (and names) of billion-dollar tech companies and regulatory concerns about artificial intelligence underscore the sweeping nature of Big Tech’s surveillance and the influence such companies hold over the people who use their apps and platforms.

As trusted tech experts Ulises A. Mejias and Nick Couldry show in this eye-opening and convincing book, this vast accumulation of data is not the accidental stockpile of a fast-growing industry. Just as nations stole territories for ill-gotten minerals and crops, wealth, and dominance, tech companies steal personal data important to our lives. It’s only within the framework of colonialism, Mejias and Couldry argue, that we can comprehend the full scope of this heist.

Like the land grabs of the past, today’s data grab converts our data into raw material for the generation of corporate profit against our own interests. Like historical colonialism, today’s tech corporations have engineered an extractive form of doing business that builds a new social and economic order, leads to job precarity, and degrades the environment. These methods deepen global inequality, consolidating corporate wealth in the Global North and engineering discriminatory algorithms. Promising convenience, connection, and scientific progress, tech companies enrich themselves by encouraging us to relinquish details about our personal interactions, our taste in movies or music, and even our health and medical records. Do we have any other choice?"

Government urged to fix NHS waiting lists after King Charles spends 24 hours on trolley in hospital corridor newsthump.com/2024/02/05/gover…
in reply to NewsThump

"Meanwhile, the government has denied that the incident has anything to do with their underfunding of the NHS, insisting that old people spending an outrageous amount of time on trolleys in hospital corridors is the obvious and entirely predictable consequence of not being able to send asylum seekers to Rwanda."

Hello hello! We just made a bugfix/security release of GoToSocial, v0.13.2.

github.com/superseriousbusines…

Background

After Mastodon announced some vulnerabilities last week we looked through equivalent parts of our own code to make sure GtS isn't vulnerable in the same way.

Good news

We didn't find anything that would allow anyone to take over an account, or to post statuses or do updates as someone else: we check Create and Update activities carefully.

Bad news

We did find some areas where remote accounts could, with persistence and custom software, make a nuisance of themselves by pretending to be other accounts and sending fakes of a subset of activities such as Likes, Blocks, Follows, Announces (boosts), and Undo's of those things.

The above is not really easy to do, and we don't have any evidence that anyone's actually done it, but hey, now it's fixed just in case.

So, if you're running v0.13.1 or below, we recommend updating to v0.13.2 using the link above. The release doesn't contain any changes to the config file or templates or anything, so it should be a quick and easy update.

If you're running on main/snapshot: we recommend updating your snapshot to the latest code on main, which includes the fix. You can get the latest snapshot binary build from here or, for docker, update your docker image to the latest snapshot tag. Depending on how far back in commits you were before this release, there may be config file changes or other things, but likely nothing breaking.

As always, thanks for reading, and enjoy your week!

in reply to Thiago Ferrer Morini

Intro to Ltt.rs, a JMAP client for Android (FOSDEM 2024)

Ltt.rs (pronounced "Letters") is a proof of concept JMAP client for Android. It is build using Android Jetpack and a headless email client / JMAP library simply called "jmap-mua". It features native Autocrypt and UnifiedPush support. Ltt.rs is merely a side project but aims to demonstrate how modern protocols and libraries can simplify the development process a lot.

When I was a kid, I liked math and art. (I still do.) The adults told me that I should be an architect. Instead I became a math teacher who makes art with all of my free time. I’m pretty sure if I had become an architect, all the buildings I would have designed would have been crooked.

This is my first #painting with reflected pink light. That’s what helps make the buildings look 3D.

@simon It's coming. In NVDA 2024.1 (in beta now), there is a "Native selection" option. From the release notes at: nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2024-1b…

"A new Native Selection mode (toggled by NVDA+shift+f10) is now available in NVDA’s browse mode for Mozilla Firefox. When turned on, selecting text in browse mode will also manipulate Firefox’s own native selection. Copying text with control+c will pass straight through to Firefox, thus copying the rich content, rather than NVDA’s plain text representation."
