Since 2020, Next Generation Internet (NGI) programmes, part of the European Commission's Horizon programme, fund free software in Europe using a cascade funding mechanism. This year, according to the Horizon Europe working draft detailing funding programmes for 2025, we notice that Next Generation Internet is not mentioned any more as part of Cluster 4.

The signatories of this open letter say: The European Union must keep funding free software

Draupnir is now being supported with a grant from NLnet NGI Zero. I've written up a post with some context, and to describe the goals for the project marewolf.me/posts/draupnir/24-…

If you do have feedback or questions you can reach out to me here or in our matrix room matrix.to/#/#draupnir:matrix.o… (which is preferred).

If you happen to find a "broken" app, please report it. Especially those ones where it's clear they cannot work (like the example I gave: bound to a single service that shut down; no guesswork there if it might still be useful for some devices). Either reach out here, or report in our issue tracker. We'll then check and, if justified, act accordingly.

Thanks a lot – also for asking!

ok this is going to be verrry interesting

the FTC has just enacted a rule declaring fake reviews, suppression of negative reviews, fake indicators of social media influence, and other similar things to be unfair or deceptive acts or practices

there are real questions around enforceablility but this could prove very helpful when it comes to holding companies accountable

You'd think so, and I sure did, but the wireless shifting systems have some pretty compelling arguments in their favor, including "you can shift gears under the heaviest loads you can put on it" and "you can _stand on the derailleur_ and it will take that abuse without misaligning or even flinching."

It's spendy, but ... man I've snapped chains and torn derailleurs _clean off_ bikes before and that looks... really good.

This post includes recommendations for teams that are procuring websites, and I think they can be summed up as: *buy simpler problems*.

Every feature that gets added via JavaScript is more complex, more expensive, and harder to improve. That means that when things go wrong, they're treble costly to fix. This is because JavaScript is the _"f-it! we'll do it live!"_ of web tech; JS disables or routes around all the ways the browsers try to help.

Let browsers help!

@jamesbelchamber the 2024-2025 calendar says exams should end Friday Feb 1st, and the next semester starts Mon Feb 10th, so still a bit up for grabs perhaps? In 2024 it was the weekend at the end of exams (would be Feb 2+3 2025); and usually it's the first weekend of Feb, but I've also been there around Feb 24th (ok, that was 2008...archive.fosdem.org/2008/) -- and in 2016 it was the last weekend of January :-) vub.be/en/about-vub/key-data-v…
