If you are blind and have multiple computers, and especially if you live on the edge and don't have a monitor hooked up to one of those computers, having a capture card really is a game changer.
I have a cheap one that I need to replace. But even with that cheap one, I was just able to call Aira from my laptop and select the capture card as my video device, rather than my camera.
Then, I hooked the capture card up to a mini PC that needed an OS reinstall, and the Aira agent was able to read the display output in real time.
From that point, it took us about 30 seconds to get into the boot menu of the mini PC and select the USB drive.
Even without account for Aira, having a way to reliably capture the output of a computer is infinitely useful. All you need is an app that can take a picture or video from that device and interpret it as-needed. That could be an OCR reader, an AI describer like Be My Eyes, or a calling app so you can ask a friend to look at it.
It certainly beats needing to position the camera in front of a screen, and in the case of the mini PC, it saves me from having to set up a screen in the first place.

I finished it, the bespoke rainbow faux fur hoodie. It has two outside pockets and one lining pocket. One photo show the back neck of the lining, which is the most complicated part (and I had to do sew it twice). I appliqued a cotton face there and embroidered some symbolic logic that translates to “there exists one Y for every X.”

This was custom made for a man that is over 6 feet tall with broad shoulders and long arms. My dress form, Marge, doesn’t have arms, so she has very narrow shoulders. So it will hang quite differently on the man I made it for than it does on Marge. #sewing

Fenrir, the screen reader, has some cool new features. It now tries to detect and do progress bar beeping to let you know something is progressing, it has rising tones for numeric progress, e.g. 95% or single pitch tones for non numeric progress, e.g. dd's download progress indicator. It can also automatically resume speech when the prompt returns. So, if you have a long process with a progress indicator, and you want to monitor it but don't want all the chatter, just silence speech until prompt returns with Fenrir+numpad_plus and have beeps for progress with speech returned when the process finishes. Latest tagged version: 2025.06.07.

I got her! I got her! I finally managed to get athena sleep barking. at least that is what I call it, even though they don't sound like real barks. this is a very short recording, but when she started doing it, I just happened to be sitting at my desk, and got out the digital recorder, and turned it on. other times I tried that, it woke her up, but not this time!

Remember the threads¹² about #LetsEncrypt removing a crucial key usage from certificates issued by them in predictive obedience to their premium sponsor Google?

We were at first concerned about #SMTP. While I had lived through this problem with #StartSSL by #StartCom back in 2011, I only had a vague recollection of Jabber but recalled in detail that it broke server-to-server SMTP verification (whether the receiving server acted on it or just documented it).

Well, turns out someone now reported that it indeed breaks #XMPP entirely: community.letsencrypt.org/t/do…

This means that it will soon no longer be possible at all to operate Jabber (XMPP) servers because the servers use the operating system’s CA certificate bundle for verification, which generally follows the major browsers’ root stores, which has requirements from the CA/Browser forum who apparently don’t care about anything else than the webbrowser, and so no CA whose root certificate is in that store will be allowed to issue certificates suitable for Jabber/XMPP server-to-server communication while these CAs are the only ones trusted by those servers.

So, yes, Google’s requirement change is after all breaking Jabber entirely. Ein Schelm, wer Böses dabei denkt.

Update: it also breaks the connections between domain registrars and registries, with most being unaware that there even is a problem at this time, let alone the crazily short timeframe. See the thread linked to in a self-reply, which also confirms that the CA/Browser forum is supporting Google in this (possibly by means of Google paying, my interpretation).

While nerdcert.eu/ by @jwildeboer would in theory help, it’s not existent yet, and there’s not just the question of when it will be included in operating systems’ root CA stores but whether it will be included in them at all.

Google’s policy has no listed contact point, and the CA/B forum isn’t something mere mortals can complain to, so I’d appreciate if someone who can, and who has significant skills to argument this in English and is willing to, to bring it to them.

Do *NOT* remove TLS Client Auth EKU!

I was also bit by this. I switched to tlsserver profile, and when my XMPP certificate got renewed today, it failed to make any S2S connections :(. I'd to revert to classic profile. Could we please keep TLS client auth EKU ? Thanks!

Dear #Letsencrypt, you helped secure millions and millions of servers, not just web servers. But your announcement at letsencrypt.org/2025/05/14/end… about ending Ending TLS Client Authentication Certificate Support in 2026 because Google changes their requirements would result in your certificates becoming a possible risk for ensuring SMTP traffic. Please think again. Please.

After this change is complete, only TLS Server Authentication will be available from Let’s Encrypt. This change is prompted by changes to Google Chrome’s root program requirements, which impose a June 2026 deadline to split TLS Client and Server Authentication into separate PKIs. Many uses of client authentication are better served by a private certificate authority, and so Let’s Encrypt is discontinuing support for TLS Client Authentication ahead of this deadline.

Let’s Encrypt will no longer include the “TLS Client Authentication” Extended Key Usage (EKU) in our certificates beginning in 2026. Most users who use Let’s Encrypt to secure websites won’t be affected and won’t need to take any action.
