there's an old comment (~2015) on HN by the rsync.net team saying they removed WebDAV support from their service because of issues with mod_dav in Apache and it was abandoned / couldn't reach the devs...
but the git history disagrees with that. It came back to life.
you could run another SFTP server on a different port or in a container. Just add the keys you want. It's what I use for personal transfers between my stuff.
it would need to be SFTP in a jail/container that's behind a wireguard tunnel that goes to a cloud server... would not be fun to set that up; would have to definitely use a separate port from 22 and then I couldn't integrate it with my LDAP auth as easily unless I setup all the pam ldap shit...
edit: also some of the things I use this for do not support SFTP, sooo
@verita84 I'm so mad at about it too, it's insane. Trying to figure out the right goddamn commands to make a role and policy and then apply it is frustrating. Everything feels so opaque without the UI. The mc command just isn't good and their docs suck
Yeah. So glad I went back to NFS instead of that shit. I was a big fan of them for years and even helped in their Slack channel and earned a minio sweater.

@verita84 there was a bug at one point where deletes didn't actually work, but it returned a 200 response code. I looked through their codebase and they weren't actually testing the functionality. They were just faking a success code to the command line tool. I asked them in their slack why they weren't actually testing the real functionality of Minio and they just made stupid excuses.
One problem with webdav is that there isn't a standard way to write partial files. The spec only allows complete overwriting of files. Apache and others provide an extension to do partial updates, but as you mention in your post, the v is for version, and so it wasn't designed to do partial updates, only wholesale replacement.
I can dig up references that talk more about it, if you want.
I was looking at it for general usage, where users expect to be able to do partial updates of large files and not have it take a minute to update. Some clients can do partial updates, but I abandoned the idea of using webdav because none of the clients publish what features like these they support, so how knows when macos or windows will break/deprecate/remove partial updates.

Je vis sans voiture (non pour le climat, mais parce que je suis aveugle), et je vous dis, c'est vachement difficile. Le transport en commun est super mal développé malheureusement, malgré le fait qu'on pourrait le faire CO2-neutre ou presque (prenez l'exemple de Nice et ses bus électriques chargés par un panneau solaire). The bit about SD cards being slow at random reads is interesting. Lately I've been mulling over an idea for Raspberry Pi-like computers, where you use an initramfs as your root FS, have some kind of process for rebuilding it with new packages, and only selectively write to the SD card the things that you really need to be durable. Haven't really fleshed it out yet, though.
@matt That's an interesting idea! Perhaps a base image on squashfs or something that gets copied to zram on boot, and then overlayfs/aufs/etc to capture changes above it. The problem there may be the limited RAM of the Pis though.
That's a valid point about limited RAM. Of course, there are Pis these days with more RAM, so depending on how big the root FS is, it might not be practically an issue. On early personal computers we used to load the OS and current application fully into RAM up-front, especially so we could swap the floppy in our one floppy drive.
@matt Hah, yes, right you are. I remember the annoyance when some larger application caused DOS to deallocate COMMAND.COM, so when it exited, I'd have to pop a DOS disk back in drive A: before I could get back to the prompt.

i dont get that chat control. how does this work with open source messengers, like dunno, where encryption is client side and the server acts as a broker. how in snowdens name can you add a backdoor in there?

People who want to mandate backdoors either don't understand or don't care that any backdoor they can mandate, a nation-state threat actor can and probably will find and exploit.
@zakalwe or, option 3: they understand, and care, and explicitly want backdoor access to their citizen's data for purposes they will never mention publicly until forced to do so by journalism and the law.

The proposals as stated have been requiring providers of e2ee messaging to do the backdoors, which would basically mean the corporate shit platforms get backdoored and the real stuff first fights then ignores the law if they don't win, and possibly gets removed from app stores, relegated to sideloading.
Nobody wants to be the party doing the backdooring. Apple is not going to step up to do it at the OS level, and ruin their reputation, when they can say "the regulation puts the burden on chat providers, not us" (except iMessage which they'd probably backdoor).
@Kierkegaanks Fortunately we are free to choose what OS we are using. There is Linux, there are the BSDs, there is GrapheneOS. So the choice is ours whether we want Freedom or total control.

I never look at this from such perspective, but once I did, it certainly makes sense. I find this atrocious and infuriating. It is just a living example of how these technologies transform the world into a modern day gulag
