"ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship—including a birth certificate—if the app says the person is an alien."

Every person involved in this decision needs to be hit over the head with a copy of Kashmir Hill's "Your Face Belongs to Us" until they come to their senses.

Once upon a time, a customer wanted to use facial recognition to scan people traveling through a large airport to see if they were in a long list of wanted criminals.

With about an 80% success rate, they expected that they’d have about 10% false positives, who would have to be interviewed, and about 10% false negatives, who would make it through the airport.

However, that’s assuming we did exactly one comparison of a single traveler against one wanted criminal. That’s not what was happening.

Let’s assume they had 1,000 wanted criminals (they had more). For each single traveler, there would be 1,000 comparisons, each of which had an 80% chance of being right, and a 20% chance of being wrong. 20% of 1,000 is 50 failures per person. 25 false positives, so the person needed to be interviewed to be sure they weren’t the criminals that the program claimed they were.

Now feed 1,000 travelers through that system, which would be about an hour’s normal traveler volume. You’re doing 1,000,000 comparisons. That’s bad.

The fact that they’re doing many more comparisons is the explanation for the “birthday paradox”, described at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday…. That’s where you have a fifty-fifty chance of two people having the same birthday in a party with 23 people. In that case you were doing 23 * 22 / 2 = 253 comparisons, not as bad as with the airport example.

The number of comparisons is the number of travelers per hour, times the number of criminals.

When the system identified someone’s grandmother as a male member of the Baader-Meinhof gang, the experiment was abruptly ended.

Once they found out what was happening, they asked what would happen if we only had a 2% error rate. The answer was 1,000 * 2% = 20, for about ten false positives per person.

The moral of the story is, if you want facial recognition to work reasonably, you need to arrange to do exactly one comparison, and also have a low error rate.

It’s fine for seeing if my face matches the picture on my passport, but little else.

important to understand that a whole range of ideologies are essentially instruments for cauterizing one's own most basic humanity away, for turning yourself into someone who can sit there and watch another human being dying right in front of you, begging for help, and then turn to the world as they expire and proclaim "here's why that's good, actually."

Years ago, I started down the path of becoming MCSE/MCSA certified with the eventual goal of working with Microsoft, or a Microsoft partner. Those plans fell through, and given what they've been up to lately, I'm kinda glad I didn't take that to it's conclusion. It might have been OK in the short term, but there's no way I'd have made it twenty plus years.

Things are definitely quite a lot different than they were in 2002, when I was a naïve high school kid with a couple of certifications to my name...
I mean, it did get me a job, which lead to other jobs, but I wish I had done things a bit differently.

To be fair, those things probably would have broken differently, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Its worked for me at the moment but I am always worried about what messup will cause me to have to stop. At the moment I'm working for a government contract and am not doing a lot of work as waiting for other to complete work so its giving me something to think about. Right now I'm trying to sort out other parts of my life a bit before making huge career decisions, though I suspect this will get overtaken at the beginning of the year.

Stepping down as Framework Linux Community Ambassadors

We are Tommi and Fraxinas, Framework Linux Community Ambassadors since September 2024.

We apprehensively followed the developments and the debate concerning Framework’s endorsement and support of Omarchy. We have no direct experience with this Linux distribution, its community, nor with the political environment around it. We did not speak up before now because learning about all of it and keeping up with all the commentary would have been a full-time job. Unfortunately we do not have the time to read every single comment on the dedicated forum thread.

Despite our admittedly limited and superficial understanding of this matter, we believe we have witnessed and read enough to make an informed decision and take a clear position.

The statements from Framework and from Nirav Patel (its CEO) made it very clear for us that Framework is not a company we feel represented by any more, and surely not a company that we want to represent as Ambassadors.

To be frank, it is not even necessary to dive into the petty drama about the recent events in order to provide an explanation of our decision. We are deeply disappointed by a company that is self-proclaimed as the resistance of the tech industry, the good David that intends to stand against the big tech Goliaths that are devouring it. Framework’s behaviour brought to surface an embarrassing and absurd inability to take an explicitly political position, blinded by the Western patriarchal narrative that technology in itself is not political. By trying to keep everyone happy (or at least not to make anyone mad) inside a fictitious “big tent”, the company proved to be no better than any of its Silicon Valley peers, dismissing comments about DHH, and comments about fascism and racism as not strictly related to the main mission.

We were proud to be ambassadors because we believed that Framework not only made products that empowered those who purchase them to fully own and repair their devices, but most importantly because we wrongly expected that this would imply changing the paradigm and the narrative about tech companies altogether.

We were offered the possibility of having a 1:1 conversation with Nirav Patel. We did not take it, because it is self-evident that our opinions are in contrast with the statements that he already made. Too bad, Framework is going to lose much more business than it would have if it simply acknowledged a mistake, took a deep inward look, and questioned its own values and stance.

In a world that is burning, thorn by conflict and greed, it is not enough to be “less evil”, to be radical only in some cases, and be moderate in others. We wanted to be ambassadors of a company that does not see fascism and proprietary software as two distant topics, but that recognised the entanglement of politics and technology, of capitalism and authoritarianism. It seems that this is not the case.

Farewell, Framework. We will miss the shining brave idea we had of you.

Does anyone know anything about the #sidephone? I stumbled upon their website on sidephone.com/ and saw #Catima listed under "Tools+" on their app list. Does this mean it's pre-installed? In the default embedded "app store"? Something else?

I'm quite curious to know more about the device, more specifically, to know more about how Catima fits in there. Kinda cool to randomly see that on a website :)

Good afternoon. I want to first congratulate you all on the new JAWS release. However, I am deeply concerned about something that I have never in my 24 years as a JAWS user have ever seen before. Why is the new page explorer being excluded from home anual licenses? Never before in JFW's long history have the developers (the creaters) of the software have made a decision to make features of the product license dependent. Yes, it's an AI feature, but so is picture smart, so is the AI labeler. Yes, it costs to use this service, but completly excluding those who cannot afford a perpetual license does not make good business sence to me. I can understand placing limitations on how many calls a user can make, but even that is questionable. The majority of JAWS users are students, and are home users. Only the professional users get unlimited uses of this feature. I do not as a user of JAWS agree with this. And if this is setting a president for future features of the software, this may make me consider other options. Again, page explorer gives much needed detail at first glance that someone may not notice unless they look. Being given suggestions on how to navigate the page is also helpful, particularly for new users. Another scenario to consider is a student, who is new to JAWS, and is having to navigate complex databases. I can remember all too well as a student having to navigate the library databases at college's and universities, and not being able to navigate the pages. Having a feature like this would have been very useful, probably would have helped me do better on my research capabilities. This is such a game changing feature, and it should not have any limits. And again I ask, if a home anual license user who pays for there JAWS license like the rest of us cannot use this feature, I ask, what is the justofication for this?

@vol4life8657 Thank goodness for the free, open-source screen reader @NVAccess that helps millions of users access computers for absolutely free. It's robust and extensible through addons and it's not controlled by a small group of individuals who charge a fortune for the privilege of accessing digital information. You can donate to support the project if you so choose, but you can download NVDA right now for zero money. No 45-minute mode!

My alarm clock is possessed
With that I am quite obsessed
It's been taken over by an evil demon scary
Makes even an IT guy rather wary

It's uploading everything to the cloud
Even when it rings out loud
Uploading your sleep and info everywhere
AH! Please of the demon alarm clock beware!

$5 a month is all they ask
For this terrible demon mask
Stealing all your information now
Just like Satan would, oh how!

Evil spirits may be exorcised
But for this something else must be exercised
Throw that connect cloud into e-waste
Hurry, hurry, make haste!
