I'm excited! I'm rearranging my room's desk space to accommodate the arrival of a Yamaha Genos2 arranger workstation keyboard. I had a chance to try out Yamaha's Voice Guide feature for this and a few other arranger workstation keyboards yesterday, and while it still has some way to go and needs a slightly different approach, I'm willing to get my hands dirty with it and again play a Yamaha keyboard. I did love their keyboards when I was younger, and every function was executable via a dedicated button or slider. And I'm excited to get back into that field of music making.

Is anyone here using a youTUbe downloader that works locally and isn't terminal-based? I've looked at several of the existing open-source projects and a lot of them are partially or completely inaccessible. Some of them even use WX, but the author seems to have forgotten what button labels are. I'm looking for something anyone could use, and yt-dlp is not really that.

you say that, but why not? Open a thing, type ydl (in the case of my sendto project) and then paste, press enter. It's not perfect, but it's not a long string.
@FreakyFwoof I did not know your SendTo project supported youtube-dl? Or am I misunderstanding. I know there are lots of ways to do this easily though. I've written the "download the video on your clipboard" style scripts.
er yeah, it's one of the things. It does require you open a terminal but like I say, I made a short bat file you call with ydl and paste. not yt-dlp. That's long for most, especially non-savvy computer users.
if by anyone you mean anyone using NVDA, there's a lot of addons that do this now for ... reasons, I'm sure. If not... yeah, not sure. The very rare occasions I need to do this I still use Dirpy, but it's not local and starting to paywall some things

I don't personally need this app, but it's always nice to celebrate positive #accessibility success/redemption regardless.
I use the my noise app and have done so for a long time. Has hundreds of cool soundscapes and randomized music for noise masking and relaxation. The dev totally redesigned the app about a year ago and the accessibility was so bad that the dev was nice enough to point me to the old app which they kept on the store. Wrote up a report to see if the guy could fix it to make it possible for us to change volumes of the 10 tracks etc. and use prefixes. Hadn't tried the new version in a while and surprisingly, it's been made way more accessible and all the things I asked about have been fixed. All sliders are labelled and draggable, no buttons are unlabelland. In the old app, you could adjust the soundscape, but you never used to know what you were adjusting. Goes to show you that some developers care, listen, and improve. Oh crap.
You know these guys have a toxic ex partner style "We will never let you go" account closure system? I mistakenly signed up for them months back only to find that their biometric authentication was invasive and repetitive, they are totally AI-pilled and Google-pilled, heavily dependent on Google infrastructure, and they like to push Musk stocks on their app front page. You can't close an account without draining it through an outward transfer and you HAVE to top it up to a minimum to do that.
I just need to Article 17 these dickheads and be done with it.

You've just had a really, really bad day. Everything that could have gone wrong did, even things you didn't know were possible, so you just collapse against the wall and let the rain fall down around you.
"Who cares", you say to yourself internally.
I really wish someone could run with this! I would love something in windows that could do this. a lot of apps can do this on android, and it is really nice, having certain sounds for certain notifications, even if you don't look at it right away, you know what it is at least.
Quite a few apps now, including web apps, can deliver standard Windows notifications, but many of them don't allow you to configure custom sounds for specific notifications; e.g. messages from specific people. During long work meetings or when I'm deeply focused, it's either not feasible for me to check each notification or the notifications all just become noise that I end up ignoring. I got sick of missing the doorbell or important messages from my wife in those situations.
So I wrote a hacky #NVDASR global plugin to search for regular expressions in incoming notifications and play the sound associated with the matching expression. It's configured with a simple tab separated notificationSounds.conf file in the NVDA configuration directory. For example:
doorbell pressed C:\sounds\doorbell.wav
If anyone's interested, here's the plugin. I can't be bothered developing a GUI, polishing it and distributing it as a proper add-on. You'll need to put this in the developer scratchpad. If you don't know what that is, probably best to ignore this.

When you say you wish someone could run with it, do you mean building it as a proper NVDA add-on? I can probably do that at least, but distributing it via the store, making a GUI, etc. is definitely more time consuming.
@jcsteh I wouldn't know how to add things to it without the GUI, I don't think. unless I could figure out the ini file if that is how you configure things. I would have to try to grab notification names, and things like that. so not hard that would be, but yes, this would be awesome to have for windows.

Hi everyone,
I would like to share a new experimental NVDA add-on:
eSpeak Voice Designer 0.2.43
The purpose of this add-on is to make the creation and editing of eSpeak voice variants much more interactive.
Instead of repeatedly editing a text file, reloading the voice and testing it again, eSpeak Voice Designer lets you change voice parameters while NVDA is running and immediately hear the result.
You can start in several ways:
from the standard eSpeak voice;
from one of the factory eSpeak variants;
from one of your previously saved personal variants.
So loading an existing variant is only one possibility. You can also start from the standard voice and gradually build a completely new variant.
The designer exposes many parameters used by eSpeak variants, including formants, pitch-related parameters, voicing, consonants, echo, breath and breath weighting, together with a number of Klatt-related parameters for experimentation.
Changes are applied live, so while designing a voice you can continue navigating with NVDA and immediately hear how the voice changes.
Personal variants can be saved as work in progress and reopened later, so it is possible to design a voice over several sessions rather than completing everything at once.
Some useful shortcuts are:
Alt+S:
Move to the Sections control.
Alt+V:
Move between the Factory variants and Personal variants controls.
Alt+L:
Move to the parameter list.
Ctrl+S:
Save the current voice as a personal variant.
F2:
Rename a personal variant.
Delete:
Delete a personal variant.
Ctrl+Shift+S:
Install the current variant into NVDA's eSpeak variant directory.
The last command is intended for when you are satisfied with the voice and want to use it as a normal eSpeak variant in NVDA.
Because the eSpeak data directory is normally protected by Windows, administrator permission may be requested during this operation.
NVDA does not immediately refresh the list of installed eSpeak variants. After installing a new variant with Ctrl+Shift+S, NVDA therefore needs to be restarted before the new variant becomes available in the normal eSpeak voice settings.
The general workflow can therefore be something like:
standard voice -> edit parameters -> save personal variant -> continue working on it later -> install it into NVDA -> restart NVDA -> select it as a normal eSpeak variant.
Existing eSpeak variants can also be used as starting points.
One important goal of the current version has been preserving the original behaviour of loaded eSpeak variants. Parameters which have not been changed by the user should remain untouched rather than being unnecessarily reconstructed by the designer.
This was particularly important for parameters such as breath, breathw and formants, where small changes in interpretation can noticeably alter the character of a voice.
The add-on interface is currently available in English, Italian, Spanish and French.
This is still an experimental project, so feedback is very welcome, especially from people who already create or modify eSpeak variants manually.
I am particularly interested in hearing about variants which contain unusual combinations of formant, breath, voicing or Klatt parameters.

Worked on music for a new client this morning, was so very fun. 2.5 hour-long meeting, lots of takes, lots of different ideas. Loved it.
How I work with people these days is not, 'here's a brief, go away and no, I don't like this or this, go back and replay bar 19 92 times...'
It's a thing I do called 'Musical Cheffing'
where the client sits on zoom because of the audio quality, I screen-share the Logic session as I work and they guide me *exactly* the way they like it.
works really well, and it means there's very little wasted time and not 12000 revisions when you're just pulling your hair out because you don't quite understand what they want.

@VE3RWJ The only way I've managed to persuade someone to give me a chance when they're determined to cheep out like that is to offer a song for free. Give me some options, and I'll pick one. This keeps me from having to do the most annoying work for nothing, but shows that I add value.
If you upload something to Youtube via web browser and Some buttons are reported as unavailable, just try pressing the button. Mostly it just works. Today I noticed this during uploads and video editing. Save button or create button when creating playlists is reported as unavailable but after pressing it it just saves and creates as expected.
Yup, lost a video description that way. Thought the save button was unavailable because it was auto saving... Lol nope.

I first wanted to start learning Greek when I was about 13, but then a lot of things held me back, including the people around me telling me that it was useless. 😑 It is not, of course! But now, 11 years later, I finally decided to go for it. I found a wonderful teacher, Vasilis, and we've been learning with great enthusiasm ever since. However, I'd also like to practice what I'm learning. Is there anyone Greek here who would like to practice with me? In return, I can offer my help with Hungarian, since it's my native language. 😊 I don't know if such a thing exists here on Mastodon, but well, it worths a try.

That's hilarious. I downloaded that Vocal Writer tool some people have been using, but I think I'm too focused on trying to figure out the next chapter of my life that I couldn't figure it out. I know it helps to be musically trained, which I sort of had that part of my life for my early childhood. Then I gave up music when I noticed my family tried to put me on a pedestal, but I followed my own heart and decided I would spend my life helping other students who were B/VI, and that's what my life path has been on ever since. Perhaps if I didn't have a family that would have exploited my talent if I'd let them, I might have kept that pary of me alive, but then adulting happened, and that's my life story in a nutshell. LLol. Seriously though, that stuff is funny.

They're pretty small changes, just fixing one bug when extracting stems and clearing up some wording in the UI regarding Cuda/MPS.

Since version 2.9 released on github some 20 hours ago, rrecording functionality of its #android variant can be controlled by executing intent actions. So we can use our automation apps of choice to map buttons, gestures whatever to these actions. For example with #corvus, I can now start and stop audio recording even from the lock screen with proper custom screen reader actions setup to call these intents.

@Steffen Incidentally I have never used windows / linux versions of #phiola. Android version is fully accessible it uses native UI controls almost everywhere, even those having no text are clearly labelled for accessibility. I am not sure easy recorder pro is available for installing on latest android versions such as android 16 and android 17.
Phiola is really very very lightweight it can record long sessions to MP3, flac and other audio formats. A future improvement for Phiola might be ability to prelisten the microphone when setting up the microphone gain.

Oh indeed, it looks much better than the last version I tested. It also appears to have more input sources than Easy Voice Recorder.

Another note; unlike most match eq's which can use a number of different filter types internally that can create a delay on a live signal, I was able to get it to rely on impulse responses internally, this means you can import/export the curve learned as the reference, target, and also export a 32 bit wave file of the IR that accomplishes the match.

Although not perfect, I'd like to introduce ToneTrace, a match eq which learns from the equalization of one recording, then learns that of another and applies the first curve to that. It also gives you 3 tones representing the level of confidence in the captures, a text description of what the matched curve does, and a tab that gives you the ability to adjust each of the graphic bands and hear its centre frequency, providing ear training while you work. github.com/dgl1984/tonetrace

I'm happy to announce, that Mini load V 1.4 has been released.
This is a very important release that fixes most issues occurring during YouTube downloads. Starting from this version, the program supports EJS, which handles YouTube challenges, meaning that 403 errors and similar issues should be mostly eliminated.
The program size has not increased significantly because it using QJS instead of Deno, which is used by default in yt-dlp.

The question about displaying errors now shows the number of errors in the window title;

There's a cafe just down the street that serves all your favourite dishes and every hot and cold drink you could imagine. Every day, you walk in and they give you your usual order. By the end of the first month you know all of their names and they all know yours. You're there so often that they give you an account you can deposit into, so you don't have to keep paying for your second and third drinks. The table in the corner by the wall outlet is basically yours.
And then you spend a weekend in the next city over, and while you're there, you get a haircut.
When Tony doesn't recognize you Monday morning, you assume he's joking and laugh it off. "Yeah, those sandwiches are making me put on some pounds. I had to lose a pound of hair to keep up. Can I have my usual? I should have $30 in my account here."
But Tony still doesn't recognize you. Even when you give your name. Even when you recite your regular order. "Look, dude. If this is some attempt to keep my money--"
"No, no, of course not!" says Tony. "We just want to make sure someone else isn't trying to order a drink under our favourite customer's name."
"So you think someone with my exact face decided to put on my clothes, come into your cafe, and pretend to be me so he could get a five-dollar latte?"
"Well, it's theoretically possible, isn't it?"
"Okay. Sure. Thanks for keeping my coffee secure. Now how do I prove I'm me?"
"Well, can you give me your customer ID?"
"No? What's that?"

He looks up from his phone and gives you an odd stare. "I think I know who you are, but you're sitting somewhere unusual. Can I just get your customer ID from you?"
"I still don't have it. Just like I didn't have it two hours ago. I don't mean to be rude, but is something wrong with you?"

And then you spend a weekend in the next city over, and while you're there, you get a haircut.
When Tony doesn't recognize you Monday morning, you assume he's joking and laugh it off. "Yeah, those sandwiches are making me put on some pounds. I had to lose a pound of hair to keep up. Can I have my usual? I should have $30 in my account here."
But Tony still doesn't recognize you. Even when you give your name. Even when you recite your regular order. "Look, dude. If this is some attempt to keep my money--"
"No, no, of course not!" says Tony. "We just want to make sure someone else isn't trying to order a drink under our favourite customer's name."
"So you think someone with my exact face decided to put on my clothes, come into your cafe, and pretend to be me so he could get a five-dollar latte?"
"Well, it's theoretically possible, isn't it?"
"Okay. Sure. Thanks for keeping my coffee secure. Now how do I prove I'm me?"
"Well, can you give me your customer ID?"
"No? What's that?"
"It's written on every receipt we give you."
"You mean the receipts you offer me and then throw away when I say 'no, thanks'?"
"Yes, those ones. Do you have your customer ID?"
"Right. You're being very difficult here, Tony. Tell me what I can do."
"We can mail you a new customer ID. Do you still live at 1927 Newcastle Road in Seattle?"
"No. Obviously no. We are in Portland. And how did you even know I lived there?"
"Not important. What's the name of your oldest cousin?"
"Patricia. But how did you--"
"Great, you're in. Do you want your usual again? How was your weekend?"
"It was ... Fine, I suppose. And yes please."
You turn to sit at your usual table, but find that someone else is already there, so instead you collapse into the closest chair you can find and manage to log into work only two minutes late.
At 10:30, you're finally hungry for more than a tiny croissant, so you call out to Tony: "Hey, could I get a sandwich?"
He looks up from his phone and gives you an odd stare. "I think I know who you are, but you're sitting somewhere unusual. Can I just get your customer ID from you?"
"I still don't have it. Just like I didn't have it two hours ago. I don't mean to be rude, but is something wrong with you?"
