Lately I’ve been realizing that I probably made a (small but important) mistake when choosing Proton Mail over @Tutanota Mail.

I truly respect and like both European companies, but what I’ve been noticing, and deeply appreciating, is how strong, healthy, and direct the relationship between Tuta and its users is. They communicate, they discuss, they listen.

It actually reminds me a lot of the @Vivaldi browser team, including @jon himself. And that kind of attitude is priceless, especially when it’s combined with such a clear stance on privacy & security, AI, and user-first values. That combination is simply top-tier.

I recently noticed Vivaldi starting some cooperation with Proton. Personally, I’d much rather see a collaboration with Tuta.

Rooting for you. Rooting for both teams (actually all three). Absolutely fantastic work.

I'm sure the @Vivaldi folks are sick of hearing this feedback, but I'll say it anyway (sorry): the only thing that holds me back from adopting and enthusiastically recommending Vivaldi is that it's not 100% open source.

With Mozilla chasing the AI dragon, now would be a really great time for Vivaldi to take the plunge and go fully FOSS. I don't know that it gains much, if anything, by being just mostly FOSS.

In die Adresszeile vivaldi:flags eingeben, und dort "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents" auf enabled setzen. Browser neu starten, und schon ists wieder überall duster. 😀

I use a combination of #Vivaldi and #Firefox.

Vivaldi with uBlock Origin Lite and the built-in blockers turned on works well, and overall, I trust the company, even if I don't prefer their browser. At least they're a European company with all the protections included.

Firefox, on the other hand, does have the reputation. I'm concerned about their direction though, and I have concerns about AI. If they develop it for localized translations, that's not too bad. As for advertising, I understand they need to find an income stream that's not Google, and if the ads are based on the site being visited, not on user browsing history, that's fine. I expect to see ads for beer and trucks when I watch sports, so why not ads for music-related companies if I visit a music website.

ICQ is closing down. It was really at its height in 2000 and that is when we integrated ICQ into Opera. We made a small (5k) client and it worked really well.

AOL had purchased ICQ and they were concerned about MSN taking users from them by connecting to their service, so they stopped supporting 3rd party clients. We contacted them, to see if they would make an exception for us, but they did not.

They said that if we removed our 5k client, we could maybe discuss bundling their client, but it was bigger than Opera, so that was not going to happen.

Unfortunately not a lot of respondents, but the ~60/40 split was enough to get me to install vivaldi.

Unfortuantely I won't be sticking with it. Why? My main reason for installing it was the new mail client, which reminded me of the old #Mozilla and #opera browsers. Alas, the mail client doesn't work the way I need it to, and there are lots of forum posts about problems with it...
