Dear Fedi friends, I need your help!

We are working on motion graphics for the Fediverse promotional video... and we would love to do a sequence at the end with a mosaic of people's profile photos. For that, I need your consent.

If you'd like to have a small cameo in our video, can you let us know if we can use your profile pic?

Thanks! 🙏

Can you please boost this?

I have an #accessibility question for #screenReader users.

If I use hashtags within flowing text, like #this, does that annoyingly interrupt the narration flow and should I rather list them all at the end?

Or is in-text tagging the preferable alternative to a large wall of hashtags at the end, like this:

#blind #AskFedi #screenReaders

I would appreciate your help in chiming in about examples of independent journalists with successful blogs/newsletters who are NOT on Substack. (I will give you credit in my blog post.)

Examples that come to mind:

On GHOST
- 404media.co
- citationneeded.news
- levernews.com
- platformer.news

On BEEHIIV
- garbageday.email
- Oliver Darcy's status.news
- New: Kat Tenbarge's spitfirenews.com

Anything else? Thanks! 🙏

If I could wave a magic wand and alter the fediverse to give you something you want from it, but can't yet get, what would it be?

Swedish/Svenska connections, I need some help! I ordered a book that shipped via PostNord. My tracking number, which was "letter" not "international", says it was delivered last night (not very likely), but the post office has no record. My Swedish is basic and not suited to business, so I have to translate the website.

NEVER MIND! UPDATE BELOW!

Would like to #askfedi about the "Conversations Legacy" #conversations #conversations_im @daniel #xmpp client - this version used to be on GooglePlay before some time, but later has disappeared, and I seem to have missed any "official" comment in that regard.

Do I understand correctly that it is just not supported/updated anymore and people who have it (I know somebody) shall update to the mainstream for security reasons?

Would the update recognize the old data or one should proceed via backup and its restoration (if it is possible)? Thanks.

Ok my US friends I need some help. I'm in the UK but I've had a NYC phone number (718) for ever via Skype, which is now closing.

My MiL uses the number to call us without international call charges.

I need a recommendation for a Skype replacement that I can port the number to and who can give me a mobile app to make and receive calls on. The ability to redirect calls to my landline would be an advantage.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Looking to join a Lemmy instance, but since I'm blind, having to deal with exclusionary captcha solutions or requests to send an email to verify I'm a human aren't something I'm interested in.Does anyone know of an instance that tries to be inclusive in their signup process? I also don't wish to be on a blindness-specific instance, as personal experience shows me that way lies a overly conservative hell I'd like nothing to do with. Also prefer an instance outside of the US for obvious reasons. Asking the fediverse at large for suggestions, as ReddIt just doesn't appeal to me considering the research I've recently done on it... #AskFedi #Lemmy #Discussions #SeekingAdvice

Fediverse friends, I'm looking to collect tips, advice and resources related to the following...

  • Trusted news sources
  • Social media not controlled / influenced by corporations, billionaires or governments
  • Guides on self-hosting
  • Private & secure communication tools/apps
  • Guides on digital security, privacy and "OpSec"
  • Ways to support your community (e.g. mutual aid, donations, etc...)
  • Anything else really

I will be adding them to this guide I've published and already started compiling (shellsharks.com/surviving-the-…). I've seen a lot of these things flying around in the wake of... well everything, and I've wanted to centralize it all in one place. For myself and for anyone else out there. Honestly I don't think there can be TOO many of these types of things. This info needs to be disseminated to everyone and made redundant.

Please forward anything you know about or have saved to me so I can add! Feel free to boost so others can contribute if they feel like it.

Most importantly, stay safe out there!

#AskFedi: Do any of you know of acceptable #EyeTracking solutions using just plain old cameras (or maybe the IR stuff that comes in iDevices)?
I want to play around with something really quickly, and just need something that kind of works, ideally without requiring additional components (though I have IR LEDs and some small camera modules lying around).

I want to write my own cross-platform and accessible for blind users #Mastodon client.
There are no #a11y friendly clients for Linux (only some TUI software) and there are only one buggy and unstable proprietary client for Windows called #tweesecake.
I already know the stack I'll use but I have one problem.
I don't know Mastodon well enough to be sure that I implement every feature which is supported there.
For sure I can read the whole API reference but maybe there are easier ways, maybe some list of features, maybe some feature guide for developers, etc.

As a blind user I can't just install any popular and cool client and take all features from it... That's the problem: they are not accessible at all or not accessible enough for every day use.

So, maybe someone helps me with some sort of docs or I don't know :D

#AskFedi: are there any recent, smart articles about #ATProto and its half-baked decentralization (so far)?

My favorite piece on the subject has been @rysiek 's "Bluesky is cosplaying decentralization" rys.io/en/167.html from a year and a half ago, but significant changes have happened in the meantime... I wonder if there are any updated posts about it?

Oh and @rysiek is one of my favorite people to follow on here, so click on that Follow button if you haven't already.

So I've been working with GTK4/Libadwaita in Python (in Flatpak), and I'm trying to get notifications to work.

I keep getting this error: "gi.repository.GLib.GError: g-io-error-quark: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Notifications: Timeout was reached (24)"

Am I missing Flatpak overrides? (Docs seem to say no docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/por… )

Am I doing this wrong? (Code at github.com/TheKrafter/Grouping… )

Edit2: Solved! Thanks everyone!
#Blind #Microsoft #excel users and others who, for whatever reason, only use the keyboard, NOT THE MOUSE: How the hell do I tell Excell to continue a pattern in a column without selecting it and clicking on the bottom left side of the screen or whatever?
Let's say I have a column with 1 in A1, 2 in A2, 3 in A3, so forth, and want that to go on for 150 cells or so. How the hell do I do it? Because I know I used to know, but I cannot find it.
It's not control+d. That just fills the whole column with 1's. It's not copy-paste; that does adjust properly for formulas, but for this, it doesn't. There is surely an option somewhere in the menus, but I cannot find it.
Alternatively, I'd also be happy to learn of ways to do this in #OpenOffice #Calc, so long as they are keyboard-only and accessible. LibreOffice doesn't work all that well here, at least Writer doesn't, but I could double-check if that extends to other programs.
#AskFedi #AskMastodon #ScreemReader

Edit: a couple folks suggested using formulas for this, adding so the first cell would be 1, the second A1 +1, etc. That works quite well for most use cases! It would mean the order of the numbers would stay the same when reordering the table though, so if I was using this to autocomplete a list of years, then sold by the comumn Income ... bam, the income of each year's not right anymore.
Also suggested was Home>Fill>Series. I do not see a Series option in the Fill menu at all, Bewilderingly. I'll try to switch my language to English to see if that's the issue, but I pressed all the things, so pretty sure it's not there for me in Office 365. Could someone with that version check whether it works for them?
Edit2: I figured out how to get to the series option! Turns out it was there, I just didn't realise I had to select the right type of series. :ms_facepalm: For those curious, for the Slovenian version, that's Alt +N, FI, V, Enter.

Researched this a while back but didn't find anything, so I'll ask here.

I'm looking for a flatfile CMS that would let me a) manage everything in a git repo and b) add logic to my site somehow.

Something like Netlify gets part of it right. You can manage content via git and include functions that are mounted at /.netlify/functions, but I can't host that myself and their prices are/were insane.

getgrav.org is closest to what I want and I'm using it now, but its git-sync plugin is a little vicious beast that will murder whatever repo you sync it with unless you set it up just so, and I'm not looking forward to trying to get that right again. No, I'm not being hyperbolic. github.com/trilbymedia/grav-pl…

If possible, I'd also like to tweak pages pre-render so I can, for instance, not show site sections/links if a user is authenticated or similar. I can do PHP if I must, but I'm way more familiar with just about every other ecosystem. #AskFedi

Need some #PeerTube advice!

The really excellent PeerTube instance tilvids.com now has a bug that stops people on Mastodon etc being able to follow Tilvids accounts:

-Existing follows work fine, but new follows turn into "Follow request sent" messages and don't go through (PT doesn't use requests).

-Messaged Tilvids about this and they rebooted server, but it didn't help.

-Posted on PT Github but no help so far.

Any suggestions for how to fix this?

Boosts appreciated!

When writing articles or documents in general I'd occassionally like to add pictures into the document e.g. a photo or a screenshot. While doing this I am always asking for help from someone else because I'm #blind. Can you give me some recommendations how to make sure the image is right size and it does not overlap the text or the other way round? Either pure HTML, or wordpress or markdown. #a11y #askfedi
