I like Christine's point about journalists saying "the Mastodon network" (rather than knowing about ActivityPub and all the other fediverse software): it's a lot like Ubuntu Linux back in the 2000s. People thought *all* Linux was Ubuntu, because that distro was the most popular. Christine's point is: this will change over time as people learn more. It's ok if people think it's all Mastodon right now.
First results of my #compression algorithm benchmark run on a 72MB CSV file. It seems #zstd really has something for everybody, though it can't reach #xz's insane (but slow) compression ratios at maximum settings.
⏱️ Compression vs Decompression speed. Interesting that #zstd has some settings that actually decompress slower than they compress. Might just be my machine, though... #xz is still a turtle 🐢, #gzip is not much better, #lz4 decompresses much faster than is compressed, #zstd again has something for everybody.
First let's look only at the non-fancy options (no --fast or multithreading) and make log-log plots to better see what's happening in the 'clumps' of points. Points of interest for me:
- #gzip has a *really* low memory footprint across all compression levels - #zstd clearly wins the decompression speed/compression ratio compromise! - #xz at higher levels is unrivalled in compression ratio - #lz4 higher levels aren't worth it. #lz4 is also just fast.
Repeated the #compression #benchmark with the same file on a beefier machine (AMD Ryzen 9 5950X), results are quite identical, except faster overall.
This plot is also interesting:
- #gzip and #lz4 have fixed (!) and very low RAM usage across levels and compression/decompression - #xz RAM usage scales with the level from a couple of MBs (0) to nearly a GB (9) - #zstd RAM usage scales weirdly with level but not as extreme as #xz
My conclusion after all this is that I'll probably use #zstd level 1 (not the default level 3!) for #compression of my #CSV measurement data from now on:
- ultra fast compression and decompression, on par with #lz4 - nearly as good a compression ratio as #gzip level 9 - negligible RAM usage
When I need ultra small files though, e.g. for transfer over a slow connection, I'll keep using #xz level 9.

By the way, this is one reason I'm **insistent** about referring to this place as the Fediverse, and always correct people when they refer to the whole thing as Mastodon.
No, Mastodon is just one initiative that makes the whole thing work. It functions because a diverse community of people made it possible.

Today's window comes a little later than usual but as there's still the 4th of December somewhere in the world, I hope it's forgiven. Inspired by a conversation I had with @adela, I decided to dedicate this one to the central purchase receipts storage system in Slovakia. The Slovak government runs a central point where all of the receipts issued by merchands and service providers are registered. Upon issuing, a receipt is assigned a unique number in that system which then is printed onto the slip of paper given to the customer. What you can then do is, using a dedicated app for this purpose, load that receipt onto your phone by entering that number or scanning the QR code printed onto your receipt in order to have all the details of your purchase presented on your smartphone. This is a great way for blind individuals to check whether their transaction has been dutyfully conducted or to help in obtaining the necessary data to maintain your spending tracking record, so even though this solution was not conceived with blind people in mind, it is a valuable enhancement towards a more independent life. technologiebezzraku.sk/2022/07… #Accessibility #Blind #AdventCalendar #Slovakia #Shopping

I was at a wedding in the weekend, crashed by a dog with a stick it really wanted somebody to throw. It dropped the stick closer and closer to the couple being wed, in the hopes the ceremony might be temporarily adjourned for more-important matters like stick-throwing. Nobody knew whose dog it was.

I'm excited to announce that egui (github.com/emilk/egui) is now the first pure-Rust GUI toolkit to implement platform accessibility APIs (most mature on Windows, with macOS catching up), via AccessKit (github.com/AccessKit/accesskit). This was just merged in egui's master branch. New versions of egui crates should be published to crates.io soon. Thanks to the Google Fonts team for funding both the development of AccessKit and the integration in egui.

@archos Já rešil piriform asi rok ale pak jsem to přeběhal. Běhám jen asi 7 let, před tím 109kg/kuřák, 67 jsem si splnil letos, slíbil svatosvatě rodině, že už žádný běžecký plány .... ale tak těch 91 bych rád, asi i tu stovku a pak fakt už na to prdím. Kolo u mě v místě moc bohužel nejde, silnička vůbec, samej magor na silnici, asi jezdím blbě a na kole se tak "nezničim" :)
Já to měl skoro stejný, začínal jsem na 120 a 40 cigaret kouřil. Maraton chci zase dát, ale už to nechci hrotit. Jak nebude příští rok , tak bude ten další.
