7 years ago, while trying to get approval to operate in cities all over the world, #Uber insisted that it would actually reduce traffic. Instead, Uber drivers cruise without passengers 40% of the time. Uber & Lyft no longer claim they reduce traffic, & now admit they actually increase congestion.
So much for “making cities better.”

What's funny is that as the vinyl resurgence continues, I find myself buying more and more CDs and cassettes.
Don't get me wrong. I still buy vinyl -- more than the average person.
But nowadays, CDs and cassettes are too good of a deal to pass up.
Also: why are people buying vinyl if they don't own a turntable?
Please don't say "art" 🙄
My favourite format is cassette tape.
It's a feat of engineering, one of the greatest examples of miniaturization of the analog era.
The sheer science is amazing.
And in the 90s, cassettes nearly reached parity with CDs in terms of sound quality.
That said, if you're new to physical music media, I highly recommend starting with CDs.
Why? Because the value is unparalleled.
Thrift stores are selling them for $1/each -- sometimes even less.
Do the math. If one CD contains 12 songs, that's pennies for a song.
Which you can then rip to FLAC, store on your computer or DAP.
And owning a copy on optical disc -- with artwork! -- isn't bad either!
I am excited to see the efforts behind endasfmascotry.com/ and perhaps it can spark momentum for even more settler allyship. #NotYourMascot #Apache
Let me share some of the things I have learned about being a better settler ally in support of reconciliation and #LandBack:
ASF and “Native”-themed Mascotry
ASF has been “playing Indian” for decades. There is no respectful way to appropriate and it’s long past the time for ASF to change its name and branding.www.endasfmascotry.com
To this day, we still violate the most basic of treaty rights, while abusing the land we've taken. Hydroelectric dams threaten entire ecosystem collapse through the risk of salmon extinction. Widespread pollution has left traditional food sources unsafe to eat.

If this is your first time learning this, you may find yourself a bit overwhelmed. Indigenous peoples have been living in some state of apocalypse since colonists arrived. I myself learned little of this in primary school, and such studies concluded with the silent assumption that "everything is better now!" It's not. Rather than look away, perhaps you'll be inspired to learn more? I highly recommend @pattyk's new book, Becoming Kin.

Plenty of great people have cycled through #Medium at various points, but I would love to see a little bit of memory retention about their organizational history:

‘We had no idea that it was coming’: Medium pulls the rug from under publications
Columbia Journalism ReviewChris Faraone knew something was wrong when he got a reader email the morning of May 7 asking if the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism was shutting down.
As far as alternatives go: I'm really excited to see more communities try out PubPub! pubpub.org
It's the most similar open-source option I've come across (e.g. has some social features and lots of ways to organize/layout content).
But open source CMSes and community-platforms are actually an embarrassment of riches. Just those pesky network effects/FOMO keeping people tethered to the VC clowncars.
I’ve been reading/publishing pieces on Medium for many years now. I’m aware of the myriad pivots, but had no idea about much of what I’m seeing here.
I love my Medium experience but I’m considering a move to Substack because I see a lot of good writers there, but would love to learn more about their experience.
Have you found a good home there? Is there anything problematic worth noting?
I've finally gotten around to publishing part 4 of my series on post-collapse computing.
blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2023/…
While this is the end of the series it's hopefully only the beginning of a larger resilience initiative within GNOME and free software more broadly. If you're interested in working on this I'd be very happy to hear from you.

The Rust base64 crate got a new release the other day, which removed (or rather deprecated for now) the simple encoding/decoding API and requires quite a bit boilerplate for such a simple task.
The maintainer does not see the point in providing a simpler API for the common cases because if the API is too difficult to use then Rust is just the wrong language for you 🙄
Too bad the crate has such a prominent name on crates.io and is used so widely. I hope that doesn't turn away too many beginners because something as simple as base64 handling is so complicated.
The data-encoding crate looks like a good alternative for the same tasks. It provides the same amount of flexibility while still providing a simple API for the common tasks.

Tomorrow is my first day of class this semester at Duke University.
For my first year seminar I am asking the students to build and use an astrolabe. It is a great way to both get a physical understanding of the sky, and to really appreciate the sophistication of early astronomy.
The astrolabe was used for centuries to tell the time, navigate, etc. Now you can make and use one too by following the instructions here:
