First, settlers must acknowledge that the colonization of the so-called Americas was a series of terrible crimes, ongoing over centuries. Whether your immigrant family identified as colonizers or refugees, they recognized and supported governments whose state policy was genocide. This enabled land theft on a massive scale.
Awareness can be a first step towards reconciliation. It is crucial for settlers to recognize each Indigenous Nation as a distinct entity, with its own culture, language, heritage, and homeland. "Indigenous" is about as descriptive as "European". Don't be that person who has no trouble differentiating French and German customs but acts like it's too hard to distinguish between Muckleshoot and Cree.
One way to engage is to learn about the Indigenous peoples whose land you reside on. native-land.ca/ has a map that can provide a great starting point. Are you familiar with the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in your area? What are their historical and modern languages? What tribal organizations can you support?
As an example, I live on Coast Salish land in so-called Seattle, Washington, USA. I use this broad cultural term because many nations shared the land I now reside on: Duwamish, Suquamish, Muckleshoot, Stillaguamish, Puyallup, Tulalip, Lummi, and others.
I began to support Duwamish Tribal Services on an ongoing basis through their "Real Rent" program, and try to make grants to tribal foundations if I visit or use a nation's historic land. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coast_Sa… realrentduwamish.org/
I also began learning about the treaties that allowed me to live here, and the context in which they were signed, where mass death due to numerous smallpox pandemics left majorities of the people in these communities dead or disabled. Under these apocalyptic conditions, the treaties of Point Elliott and Point No Point were signed in 1855.
Generous treaties were not enough for our colonizer ancestors. They sought complete domination of Indigenous peoples. Chief Seattle's own white son-in-law resented traditional, tribal housing and the dignity and community it provided. He burned down his family's longhouse.
The US government made every effort to force Indigenous peoples out of their traditional ways of life to fuel the economy with more workers and acquire more land and resources.
To this day, we still violate the most basic of treaty rights, while abusing the land we've taken. Hydroelectric dams threaten entire ecosystem collapse through the risk of salmon extinction. Widespread pollution has left traditional food sources unsafe to eat.
If this is your first time learning this, you may find yourself a bit overwhelmed. Indigenous peoples have been living in some state of apocalypse since colonists arrived. I myself learned little of this in primary school, and such studies concluded with the silent assumption that "everything is better now!" It's not. Rather than look away, perhaps you'll be inspired to learn more? I highly recommend @pattyk's new book, Becoming Kin.
asking out of the curiosity, how does the accessibility compare to VS 2022, or VS Code? Are they better, or is it the same everywhere? I'm not blind, or disabled in any other way, but at least half of all the accessibility features I know about are useful to people like me, because they either speed up my workflow, or make it more comfortable.
@y4si0 Hi, thanks very much for your interest. The short answer is that everything comes to speed. JBR is the fastest IDE, the reaction time is instant, but some things do not read. VS 2022 is a mess, its slow and some things do not read; VS 2019 is very good, but its function will be limited as time comes and VS Code I personally don't like very much as its web based. I hear blind developers like and use it, but not for C#, rather for Python, Rust, ETC.

I’ve been reading/publishing pieces on Medium for many years now. I’m aware of the myriad pivots, but had no idea about much of what I’m seeing here.
I love my Medium experience but I’m considering a move to Substack because I see a lot of good writers there, but would love to learn more about their experience.
Have you found a good home there? Is there anything problematic worth noting?

The Rust base64 crate got a new release the other day, which removed (or rather deprecated for now) the simple encoding/decoding API and requires quite a bit boilerplate for such a simple task.
The maintainer does not see the point in providing a simpler API for the common cases because if the API is too difficult to use then Rust is just the wrong language for you 🙄
Too bad the crate has such a prominent name on crates.io and is used so widely. I hope that doesn't turn away too many beginners because something as simple as base64 handling is so complicated.
The data-encoding crate looks like a good alternative for the same tasks. It provides the same amount of flexibility while still providing a simple API for the common tasks.

For my first year seminar I am asking the students to build and use an astrolabe. It is a great way to both get a physical understanding of the sky, and to really appreciate the sophistication of early astronomy.

I copied the whole rust doc approach for gi-docgen, after the hotdoc maintainer added the source locations to the introspection data; having a direct link to the source is a great way to help people, and more importantly to get contributions back. Nothing like fixing a typo, or clarifying the docs, to get a new contributor involved in a project
Direct links to the docblocks let people open up the source on GitLab, edit from the web UI, and open a merge request—all without using the command line or an IDE; and since the API reference is built by the CI pipeline, you can also verify that things like links are correct, and see the final output before hitting the Merge button. It's so convenient, I ended up writing a Sphinx extension to link the pages on developer.gnome.org to their corresponding files in GitLab.

Glad I saw this. When I run check for updates, it tells me Libreoffice 7.3 is up to date. NB- system requirements, from the downloads page, says MacOS 10.12. But 7.4 release notes says 10.13.
@Hash Hmm, it should work – what's your setup (eg macOS version)? Note that the Mac App Store shows by default apps for iPhones and iPads, so you may need to change that...
Some crucial fixes have gone into the macOS version which should resolve the incessant crashing that was happening since 7.2. Many thanks to the developers who have submitted these fixes!
