A lot of people talk shit about #Firefox's performance, but today I needed to convert a 200mb html file (don't ask). I thought no fucking way would Firefox open it, and if it would, my screen reader would die on it. So I tried pandoc. Pandoc completely choked on it and proceeded to OOM. After a measure of despair, I tried Firefox. It opened the file just fine, and converted it to text. Fucking win.
I recently picked up a cheap ($13) AM/FM/shortwave radio. XHDATA D-219. Cheap and cheerful. Feels like an analog radio, but has a digital tuner. Surprisingly good sound for it's tiny size, and a quite good and sensitive receiver, especially on FM.
One cool feature, though, is that SW band 4 happens to end right at 10 mHz, and SW band 7 starts at 15. The analog feeling tuning dial has end-stops.
So, even with the radio turned off, not looking at it (very handy for me, since I can't see it), I can go straight to WWV on either 10 or 15 mHz. 5 is trickier, and this radio doesn't pick up 2.5, 20 or 25 mHz. It has a gap between 18 and 21.
Anyway, I'm more excited about that than I really should be.
Yeah, I got one of those late last year. Given the price, I've found it to be an unusually pleasant investment. Just wish it could do SSB so I could read the CW mail, as it were.
@sclower yeah, that would be cool. I have a couple of other small radios for that, not including the two HT's I have that can tune down to 100 kHz, though they are not super sensitive outside of VHF/UHF. But they will do AM, SSB and CW.

I don’t generally post here as people have probably noticed, but here’s a pdf of a recent court ruling, and this turns out to be the easiest way for me to link to a copy of it, since I don’t really maintain any web presence normally and I don’t want to post pdf’s to the kernel mailing lists or anything like that.
And the reason I want to post about it, is that it basically validates my long-held views that the GPLv2 is about making source code available, not controlling the access to the hardware that it runs on.
The court case itself is a mess of two bad parties: Vizio and the SFC. Both of them look horribly bad in court - for different reasons.
Vizio used Linux in their TVs without originally making the source code available, and that was obviously not ok.
And the Software Freedom Conservancy then tries to make the argument that the license forces you to make your installation keys etc available, even though that is not the case, and the reason why the kernel is very much GPLv2 only. The people involved know that very well, but have argued otherwise in court.
End result: both parties have acted badly. But at least Vizio did fix their behavior, even if it apparently took this lawsuit to do so. I can’t say the same about the SFC.
Please, SFC - stop using the kernel for your bogus legal arguments where you try to expand the GPLv2 to be something it isn’t. You just look like a bunch of incompetent a**holes.
The only party that looks competent here is the judge, which in this ruling says
Plaintiff contends the phrases, “machine-readable” and “scripts used to control compilation and installation” support their assertion in response to special interrogatory no. 4 that Defendant should “deliver files such that a person of ordinary skill can compile the source code into a functional executable and install it onto the same device, such that all features of the original program are retained, without undue difficulty.”
The language of the Agreements is unambiguous. It does not impose the duty which is the subject of this motion.
Read as a whole, the Agreements require Vizio to make the source code available in such a manner that the source code can be readily obtained and modified by Plaintiff or other third parties. While source code is defined to include “the scripts used to control compilation and installation,” this does not mean that Vizio must allow users to reinstall the software, modified or otherwise, back onto its smart TVs in a manner that preserves all features of the original program and/or ensures the smart TVs continue to function properly. Rather, in the context of the Agreements, the disputed language means that Vizio must provide the source code in a manner that allows the source code to be obtained and revised by Plaintiff or others for use in other applications.
In other words, Vizio must ensure the ability of users to copy, change/modify, and distribute the source code, including using the code in other free programs consistent with the Preamble and Terms and Conditions of the Agreements. However, nothing in the language of the Agreements requires Vizio to allow modified source code to be reinstalled on its devices while ensuring the devices remain operable after the source code is modified. If this was the intent of the Agreements, the Agreements could have been readily modified to state that users must be permitted to modify and reinstall modified software on products which use the program while ensuring the products continue to function. The absence of such language is dispositive and there is no basis to find that such a term was implied here. Therefore, the motion is granted.
IOW, this makes it clear that yes, you have to make source code available, but no, the GPLv2 does not in any way force you to then open up your hardware.
My intention - and the GPLv2 - is clear: the kernel copyright licence covers the software, and does not extend to the hardware it runs on. The same way the kernel copyright license does not extend to user space programs that run on it.
@trashheap The “argument” by the SFC is complete garbage, and always has been. There has been no question about the license, and I have made it very clear over the years. And the SFC knows that.
So when they argue their incorrect reading of the GPLv2 in court, they are absolutely not doing GPLv2 enforcement. They are trying to further an agenda that is invalid, and always has been, and is explicitly against the wishes of the actual copyright holders.
So the SFC is just pure trash.
If they want to “protect” some project, let them protect a project that asks for it - not one that is known to not want their kind of protection.
Because what they are doing is a racket, plain and simple.

I don't know if there's any truth to this, but this morning, I heard from someone who lives in Canberra that they had snow on Christmas Day in 2006. Not enough to stick, but enough to be noticed.
@BorrisInABox 2006 was the first Christmas we had in lutruwita after moving from Canberra... it was a pretty shite day there too. The highlight was watching a bloke in a wetsuit swim out to the Sandy Bay pontoon pushing a floating esky. He stood on the pontoon and cracked a beer. It was like 10 degrees and overcast... BOM records say it was between -1.8 and 1.7 degrees on the top of My Wellington/ kunanyi that day.
So I just removed and re-paired my bluetooth headset because, in Windows Bluetooth settings, it said it was only 10% paired. Now it says it's 20% paired. What can I do to force it the rest of the way and why might it be getting stuck? Thanks for any help.

FYI, a friend brought the reTerminal E1001 (black-white) and E1002 (colour) after trying my XIAO 7.5". He doesn't use it with Fruitstand but with Puppet on Home Assistant but he said it's basically the same config so getting Fruitstand to work with those is probably fairly easy.
He stated they both have way better build quality, but he lamented the low memory making it very hard to get a proper colour image on the E1002.
good to know there’s some options! I do intend to build my own with a color panel, and I’m going to add an attached temp/humidity sensor for indoor stats. Might look at making a remote one for outdoors too if I feel motivated lol

Well, let me say that it sounds awesome! I really like it for its clarity of voices and natural intonation. But it has huge pauses with NVDA even when commas are encountered. And initial syllables, vowels or consonants are oftentimes missed, and it becomes more evident as we increase the speech rate or speech quality. So 8:34 AM may be announced as 34 AM. Should I open issues on Github? I mean is this something you may want to improve?
More importantly, stopping speech doesn't work. Your approach seems to be wrong. The speak method runs in the main thread, and I assume synthesizing blocks.

Lumimyrskyssä Jussarön ja Harmajan välillä olevan, sodan aikana tehdyn miinakentän läpi navigoiminen ei olisi ollut turvallista pimeässä ja lumimyrskyssä, vaikka miinakenttään oli raivattu suojakäytävä. Aluksen ankkurit eivät kuitenkaan kyenneet pitämään alusta paikallaan kovassa myrskyssä vaan alus ajautui yön aikana useita kertoja karille kyeten kuitenkin irrottautumaan omalla konevoimalla. Lopulta alus osui 02:15 kariin keskilaivan kohdalta. Runko katkesi ja alus upposi parissa kymmenessä minuutissa.

Ihmekös tuo kun ei ollut koskaan nähnyt mustaihoista ihmistä ennen.
Sodan jälkeisenä pula-aikana ylimääräistä tavaraa, kuten vaatteita tai kenkiä ei ollut. Tästä huolimatta saarelaiset löysivät auttavan vaatetuksen pelastuneille. Mainittu afroamerikkalainen merimies oli kuitenkin niin suurikokoinen että hänelle ei löytynyt riittävän suuria kenkiä mistään. Paitsi pelastetut merimiehet, myös Yhdysvaltain liittovaltio muisti utöläisia avustuspaketilla joka pula-aikana tuiki tarpeellisen ruoan lisäksi sisälsi muun muassa myös tuolloin niin harvinaista kahvia sekä nailonsukkia joita ei saanut edes isommista kaupungeista.
Jotain olennaista utöläisten mielenlaadusta kertoo, miten tavarat päätettiin jakaa. Tavarat myytiin kyläläisten kesken huutokaupalla ja tuotolla ostettiin kymmenhaarainen hopeinen kynttelikkö. Sen jokaiseen haaraan kaiverrettiin haaksirikossa menehtyneen merimiehen nimi. Kynttelikkö on vieläkin nähtävillä Utön hautausmaan keskellä olevassa rukoushuoneessa.
Säästin tarinan loppuun aikaamme sopivan yksityiskohdan, jonka kuulin tapahtumista vasta pari vuotta sitten. Luotsin perheeseen majoitettu afroamerikkalainen merimies oli hämmästynyt kun hänet joulupäivänä kutsuttiin isäntäväen kanssa samaan pöytään syömään. Hän oletti rotuerotteluun tottuneena, että hän söisi jossain muualla eikä isäntäväen ja kapteeninsa kanssa. Eipä Utön pienissä taloissa olisi edes ollut toista paikkaa syödä. Pelastettujen merimiesten isännille oli kuitenkin itsestään selvää että vieraat syövät samassa pöydässä jouluaterialla.

Absolutely! I tried Home Assistant on my RP5 and it worked just fine. You may want to run it in a docker setup though, but not strictly necessary. I ended up uninstalling Home Assistant as I did not find it added anything to what I already get with the Google Home app. :)
When JAWS goes crazy! Both my work desktop and my laptop have JAWS 2026, with the company covering the licenses. But after updating my laptop to the December build of JAWS 2026 a couple of days ago, I started getting this awful error: “cannot load VCSPEECH.JLS.” Repairing JAWS or even uninstalling and reinstalling it doesn’t fix anything. I did some online research, and people who ran into the same problem say the only solution is reinstalling Windows 11. Seriously? That’s absolutely ridiculous and completely unacceptable. Luckily, NVDA is my main screen reader. I’m honestly fed up with trying to troubleshoot this issue. I’m even considering ditching JAWS entirely at work, despite the fact that it still performs better in some environments and scenarios.
Just a random observation. On FB someone posted up a thing asking who you'd like to kiss under the mistletoe, as in which celebrity. Is it just me, or does it seem that the majority of the sighted population picks actors/actresses? Meanwhile, I'll pick a musician every time.
