I used to hate listening to recordings of my voice, but after endless hours of rewatching the English version and the French one, I'm now totally ok with that 😅

Did you know that there is hidden morse code all throughout Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' album?
Somehow, probably during the two-track mix-down stage of the album, the CW from a powerful, very low frequency transmitter about 37 miles north of the studio in which this album was recorded found it's way to tape. It's centered at 16 kHz, and so low in the mix that you can't actually hear it... at least, not without some help.
This is a very short, not particularly comprehensive demo using two different methods -- a pair of stock Reaper plugins and an SDR package to mostly isolate this morse transmission, which is heard throughout the entire album.

Imagine not having to worry about what OS you use because of accessibility so much that you can literally refuse to run stock Android for privacy reasons. Day in the life of a sighted nerd, a pipedream for blind ones.

Have you thought about doing a video on UI sound design? Thinking about getting into it myself, and while I have a general idea of what's involved, I think it would be nice to have someone with more experience explain the ins and outs.

I don't think getting consistency with SVG's filters is going to be a problem. None of the implementations for em and ex are consistent. Percent is broken in a couple too, including Inkscape.

I'm particularly sensitive to the problem of UI toolkit developers being too cutting-edge. WPF did that in the 2000s, and that was one reason why my brother had to upgrade his laptop in 2011. The Bible study program he was using (he was in seminary at the time) didn't run well on his 2007/2008 laptop, at least in part because that program used WPF. And he wasn't the only one; there was a whole forum thread about it. I mean, come on, a program like that is just displaying text.
To clarify, I don't know exactly what WPF did in the 2000s that didn't run well on lower-end hardware of the time. Maybe just using Direct3D at all. But it was definitely a problem.
@matt if i remember correctly it was when they switched from fully software rendered to direct2d, so you went from not needing a gpu to needing one. i don't think wpf ever supported older software paths, but might be wrong about that.
@matt yeah for sure, and I think having a full cpu pipeline as a fallback is a really solid engineering decision all round. (though, the performance numbers might be a bit... interesting if you combine old hardware with full cpu rendering) I think a lot of the struggle here is more ecosystem sadness around drivers and platform apis though, rather than hardware requirements per-se.
Yeah, I wonder how the modern full CPU pipeline will compare to classic implementations like GDI, in both performance and functionality. Presumably the modern renderer is higher quality, though I don't exactly know what that means.
@matt Speaking out of my ass, I think the big practical differences are roughly: 1) current monitors are huge, so you're pushing a lot more pixels than before. 2) the approach that vello is taking, takes on a more challenging problem. typically in gui applications you'd render text glyphs and manually cache them, in comparison this is blasting the whole scene at the api and rasterizing it directly. this approach has some levers for automatic caching, but it's unclear how effective it will be.

After almost a year I made another release of the Linux Desktop Migration Tool. In this release I focused on the network settings migration, specifically NetworkManager because it’s what virtually all desktop distributions use.
I hacked the first implementation of that feature in the UWP XAML framework in the 2017 Hackathon, less than a month after I started at MS. Diving into unfamiliar code like that and getting a proof of concept done was fun. I don't think any of my code from that hack made it into production though, and I don't remember how long it took for a production version of that feature to actually be released.
So I'm working on this hybrid audiobook/ebook setup. The page scrolls to follow the audio, keeping the section being read roughly in the middle of the page. Continuous scroll made me queasy, so instead it scrolls every few seconds.
I made a custom chapter selector rather than a dropdown box, because I'm an eejit prone to reinventing the wheel, when the wheel isn't aesthetically pleasing to me. Do you think it works? Or should I go trad on this part of the UI?

i just managed to set it up (had to wait for f-droid and nixos to have the respective app versions) and it works really well! just about 2s after creating an even in the nextcloud web interface i can already see it on my phone!
What can I say? It took a minute to setup and just works, new calendar entries are synced in 5 seconds now 😁, very very nice. 👍 Thank you, every one involved!
you can use any unified push provider. ntfy would work perfectly. Install the NC extension dav_push then set ntfy as push provider in davx5 settings at the very bottom.
After that you can check status in a caldav/carddav collection in DAVx5 in the details view.
@strk @menel maybe you need to refresh the calendars list once in the caldav tab? or maybe you are using a too old nextcloud vetsion where the dav_push app ist not available for? min 30 or 31 I guess

Using Gemini to write me a script to fix a Python error I was encountering took me about an hour. Writing the script myself would have taken me about an hour (I have to look up the syntax for tar and invoke-url and friends every single time). However, as a lazy programmer, Gemini's code is actually better. I wouldn't have bothered with any error checking, and I would have hard coded all the paths I needed. I get annoyed at the narrative that all the awareness and work on climate change hasn't done anything. Yes, global CO₂ emissions indeed continue to climb, but we don't know the counterfactual. When I was in grad school, we were on track for 5°C of warming. Now it's below 3°C. That's progress, even if we should do a lot more.
And as far as I remember my stats, emissions per person in developed countries are actually falling, the reason global emissions are rising is because the world population is rising, and many poor countries are developing and slowly approaching western standards.

Monday. A weekend of medical mayhem as my daughter manages to slice her eye open with the tiny, pointy shaft of a bicycle pump, my mother-in-law ends up in crippling pain whenever she eats, and the wife continues to balloon as baby grows.
It's not been relaxing, by any stretch, although we did have a delightful couple of hours in Worcester at the baloon festival on Friday, where a gentlemen blew himself up in a coffin as a crowd pleaser.
I hope she getts better very soonish, kindely send her my wishes for her to get better soon, a virus, is that a genneral virus or something in the eye it's self? as for my eyes, left has high pressure compared to the write one, you can tell, if you put a finger on the left eye it's alot harder than the write eye ball. the left eyeball has less give compared to the write. how bad was the cut? I am hopeing not that bad?
@mhussain thank you. :) Just a respiratory virus from being around all the other sick people we think. The cut on the eye is very small thankfully, the worry really was infection because it was punctured by something stored outdoors. She has antibiotic eyedrops which will hopefully prevent anything more serious on the eye front.
good call with the eyedropps, they should also keep that eye loobricated. pardon my spelling sir. considdering my eye situation and wateing at the nhs for 7 hours 5 or 6 months ago, I feel your pain. my situation was a really red left eye it was due to having a really hot shouer eyes and heat don't go well that much, they prescribed me some eye drops antibeotic ones along with some eye dropps that would loob the eye it is the left eye that has higher air pressure than the write, this may be inhibiting correct tear ducting. hence the dropps. odd if i don't sleep for a night the pressure in the left eye is greatly diminished which kinda helps but does not at the same time. i'm not sure where you are based but nhs wateing times really suck it's most likely gotten worse since my last visit. I hope your daughter getts better soon. one question is your daughter a little one? if yes then waiting at the hospital must have been hell a? curious.
