I was nerd-sniped by @bagder (mastodon.social/@bagder/114810…) into looking at how rustls-ffi stacks up against OpenSSL on memory allocations/peak heap usage when plugged in as a curl vTLS backend.
Headlines: * with rustls-ffi 0.15.0: 2,176 allocations. peak heap of 394kB. * with openssl 3.4.1: 308,132 allocations (!). peak heap of 2.1MB
Tested on Linux, with curl 8.14.1 and OpenSSL 3.4.1 (latest in nixpkgs) vs rustls-ffi 0.15.0
Full disclosure: bagder's measurements w/ the newer OpenSSL 3.5.1 show an improvement. It"only" performs 54,000 allocations....

perhaps a standalone tool to hash an input string provided by the site could work, with custom difficulty levels. submit the result via POST if JS is turned off.
i thought about it a little on and off, and i kinda wonder if instead of relying on cookies or w/e to present that it has a pass, what if the server instead kept a TTL database of currently allowed IPs, where you could then run the challenge from anything on your network (including a cli tool if you wanted) and have that access pass apply to everything else under the same IP
and then once its done it requires nothing from whatever browser or application is accessing it for however long the pass lasts, not even a cookie or auth token
scrapers with rotating IPs shared with robots (or users!) you actually want make this difficult. you’d need more data, at which point you’ve reinvented services like Cloudflare.
I really wish more politicians understood that giving people benefits stimulates the economy. It's not some black hole the money disappears into. But it drives growth. Part of the reason the UK economy is so lackluster, is that the amount we provide to those most in need is so punitively low. IMO the old Tree menus seem like the best system for complicated option GUI's with many views to show.
Then you can describe this in JSON, with metadata for whether the data is a dropdown or number turner etc. and you make a generic view loading code to auto-generate the view based on the JSON.
Then for any temp changes you have a in-memory copy until apply/ok and that gets looped and applied to the settings file.

I would expect a trend that is somewhat "real" up to (current time - mean age of vuln * 1.5) or so.
And continuing said trend could estimate the number of currently unknown vulnerabilities. One would need to model the trend by extrapolation and/or using commit statistics.
Would it be possible to calculate a "risk factor" for each line of code based on its age? Or would that be complicated by modifications since the bug was introduced?
I think this is slightly better. Shows better how many really old #curl vulnerabilities we have had reported. Age of the flaw in number of the years on the y-axis, proper date of the report on the x-axis.
did I understand correctly that since 2020, 12 vulnerability older than 20 years have been fixed? I would have expected that the age of the oldest vuln found would have plateaued at one point (probably at 10-12 years old), but it seems not.
And do we have a graph that shows when a vulnerability was used (first use to beeing fixed) in the x axis and the age of the vuln in the y axis? But I don't expect that we have such data, or so unreliable it's not even useful.
The question I try to answer is "are very old vulns used in practice, and is it as big of a deal as I think at first glance?".

@cachondo They admit that factor, but it’s not the whole story. They refer to an earlier study where the subjects “were mostly trained in the *camel-case style*” where the result was similar, but not as pronounced (13.5% vs 20%): “Comparing this result to the original study, we can say that with more experience (training), the effect of identifier style on performance is reduced, but not eliminated.”

Wenn du die Option möchtest, die Anzeige auszublenden, wäre das ein neuer Feature Request. Die sind am besten als GitHub Issue aufgehoben, wo eben der Friendica Tracker ist.
@wilhelm Das bedeutet, dass mir Stand jetzt wirklich diese Anzeige bei jedem Bild aufgezwungen wird? Man hat als User da keinerlei Einfluss darauf? Das ist aber dann eher suboptimal umgesetzt.
Ich weiß es nicht. Ich habe das Feature weder implementiert noch vorgeschlagen. Grundsätzlich finde ich es hilfreich und sinnvoll, bei Bildern mit Beschreibung einen visuellen Indikator zu haben, der mich wissen läßt, dass es für das fragliche Bild eine Beschreibung gibt. Wenn dich die Information bei Bildern mit Beschreibung so massiv stört bleibt eben der Weg, einen Feature Request einzureichen und einen Entwickler dafür zu begeistern. Wie ist diese Funktion in anderer Software umgesetzt? Wie machen es Mastodon oder Iceshrimp oder Sharkey?
@xy.. @Fedinaut Nein, das ist Teil einer Maßnahme, um Friendica für sehbehinderte Menschen zugänglich zu machen. Daher ist das aus meiner Sicht eine sehr sinnvolle Änderung.

@Fedinaut friendica hat es gar nicht nötig Mastodon nachzumachen. Sicher machen die vieles besser. Aber Friendica hat andere gute Ideen oder Konzepte. Sonst wäre ich ja zu Mastodon gegangen..
Das finde ich auch etwas nervig. Eigentlich ist der Alt-Text doch dazu da angezeigt zu werden wenn das Bild aus welchem Grund auch immer nicht angezeigt werden kann. Und natürlich für NutzerInnen von Screenreadern. In beiden Fällen muss dieser Hinweis aber nicht angezeigt werden.
@Montag Gerade für Nutzer von Screenreadern ist es wichtig zu sehen ob es einen ALT-Text gibt. Wird das nicht angezeigt, dann gibt es keinen und das Bild ist für diese User nutzlos.
@Franky_Tegeler :friendica: Vielleicht habe ich eine andere Vorstellung davon, wie ein Screenreader funktioniert. In meiner Vorstellung zeigt ein Screenreader ja nur den Text an und bei Bildern wird der Alt-Text angezeigt wenn vorhanden. Deshalb ist meinem Verständnis nach so eine Markierung das es einen Alt-Text gibt eigentlich nicht notwendig. Entweder man schaut sich die Timeline mit einem grafischen Browser an und die Bilder werden angezeigt, oder es wird ein Screenreader/Textbrowser genutzt der sowieso keine Bilder anzeigen kann und deshalb den Alt-Text nutzt. Beim erstellen eines Beitrages wäre ein Hinweis hilfreich das der Alt-Text fehlt.
@Montag Ja, im großen stimme ich dir zu. Dennoch kann ein ALT-Text auch in der App oder im Browser sinnvoll sein, da ich dort andere verkürzte oder größere Infos zum Bild unterbringen kann. Es kommt wie immer darauf an was das Bild zeigt und was ich damit transportieren will.
@Fedinaut Also ich finde das zum einen praktisch, da sofort klar ist, dass hier ein Alttext vorhanden ist. Für mich neben dem Inhalt Grund einen Beitrag zu teilen oder eben nicht. Außerdem wird Beeinträchtigung bzw. Barrierefreiheit sichtbar gemacht und so Teil der wahrgenommenen Realität.
@Serenityfreaksout Ich finde es gut, wenn Menschen mit Behinderungen Unterstützung geboten wird. Dabei finde ich es aber wichtig die große Menge nicht-behinderter Menschen im Blick zu behalten. Übertragen auf UI-Design würde das für mich heißen, dass Barrierefreiheit optional und in den Optionen gut auffindbar integriert ist. Ich habe viel Verständnis für andere Ansichten; für mich persönlich sollte Ästhetik über Barrierefreiheit gehen.
@Serenityfreaksout Aber doch bitte nicht mitten im Bild. Wenn ich daran denke, wie viel schöne Fotos hier von Usern präsentiert werden und dann ist mitten im Bild so eine graue Box. Das zerstört das komplette Bild. Außerhalb vom Bild gerne, aber nicht im Bild. Aber am besten wäre, wenn jeder User selber entscheiden könnte, ob das angezeigt bekommen möchte oder nicht.
@Fedinaut Ein sinn dieses alt-labels ist glaube ich, dass man es anklicken kann und dann der alt text eingeblendet wird. So ist es bei Mastodon, wo das evtl. herkommt. Wie das nun behinderten Menschen hilft, weiß ich nicht. Der alt text ist bei friendica auch sichtbar wenn man das Bild anklickt, in der lightbox. Ich hab nix dagegen das Label anzuzeigen, aber vielleicht können wir es auch so machen, dass es bei Klick den Text anzeigt..
@xy.. Also ich habe es gerade noch einmal getestet. Es macht keinen Unterschied, ob ich auf diese graue Box klicke oder auf das Bild. Es wird in beiden Fällen das Bild geöffnet, mit dem ALT-Text darunter. Der ALT-Text wird übrigens auch angezeigt, wenn ich mit der Maus über das Bild fahre.
