The Win32k module in Windows is a common source of vulnerabilities. Which means rewriting it in a memory-safe language could be very impactful.
The performance of the Rust rewrite so far seems really good, and `unsafe` is mostly used for FFI. Meaning as more code is ported, the number of unsafe calls is going down.
Rewriting the entire Windows operating system in Rust is not something which is realistic right now — the scale of the project is just too big for that.
Instead this is an experiment in targeting one of the most vulnerable parts of Windows, and rewriting *that*. And that’s been so successful, it’s actually going to be shipping soon! Which is a huge deal!

#Amberol 0.10.0 is out! After a tragic mess with a #GNOME run time update, and with lots of fixes accumulating over a development branch, I decided to spin up a release. Highlights: - tweaked UI, to avoid confusing the waveform control and the volume control - improved scaling of textures using #GTK 4.10 - ability to restore the last playlist at startup - optional background playback
Plus the usual lots and lots of small fixes, tweaks, and performance improvements.
It's been a year and a couple of weeks since I released Amberol 0.1.0 on Flathub, and it's been downloaded 100k times, which is absolutely unfathomable to me, considering that I started the project to figure out how GTK and Rust worked together, and had no pretence of making an application that would be useful for anybody but me.
I'd pretty much come to the conclusion that music players were like email clients - they all inevitably sucked, just in different ways - but your app has made me reconsider. I've started listening to my local music library again, it's so nice and simple.

Audon is a great real-time audio streaming service for the #fediverse! Think Spaces or Clubhouse, and you pretty much got it. You create a room for audio, where other people can listen to you, or just give them the role of speaker as well.
You can easily log in with your fediverse (Mastodon/Calckey/Pleroma) account, create a room, share the link, and you're ready to go!

I’m very excited to see the discussion for the @Mastodon post migration issue has picked back up. This is probably the single largest gap between rhetoric and reality on #Mastodon.
It’s anecdata, but *every singe person* I mention account migration to immediately asks “oh, so my posts can move with me.” This is, unfortunately, immidiately followed up with disappointment that their posts stay behind. Coupled with the recent push to make mastodon.social the default for the iOS app… we need a way for users to move around SEAMLESSLY. We can make all the technical excuses we want, but if the process doesn’t work it’s not really account migration.
Until we have post support, we should probably say we have “social graph” migration, not “account migration,” or we’re really just lying and setting up people to be let down.

When I wrote this I didn't know about Surge, so it's mostly Sylenth, with some Komplete thrown in. When I have the energy again I'll go back and make that lead in the last bit properly emotive. i was planning to lay down the melodic bit first and then dub modulation on it later but never got around to doing that.
@jcsteh tell me about it. For every finished project there are double digit unfinished ones. Sometimes I can reuse snippets, but most of them just end up sitting there. So I've slowly been posting them here.
@jcsteh I'm in the same boat, except I so rarely have the energy for music, combined with the way inspiration works, and you get the fact that not counting ringtones, I've finished *3* tracks since 2019, and haven't even done anything new since August of 2021.
@x0 @jcsteh This is why I'm personally so damn excited about Ableton NOte. It's loop-based on purpose, so even when you think 'aah damn I haven't finished a thing,' you really have. But you have the option of extending it with more clips, or not as the case may be. Pattern-based sequencing is where I cut my teeth back in the day anyway, so I feel right at home with this one.
@x0 @jcsteh Methinks you'll be quite happy with it. They're still working on accessibility, and I, along with a few others, have weekly meetings about accessibility issues so it's not stagnant in the slightest, which is good.
@FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh I want to play around with it as well, but I don't have an S-series keyboard and no other device that I could use via Bluetooth as it seems, so i'll have to delay that for a bit.
@FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh Tried the touch screen only variant once and well... direct touch is so uncomfortable to use really. Do we have something like overdubbing in there so that we can layer stuff on a single track as we go along, or do we have to record every clip all together?
@ToniBarth @FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh Yup. Press play. Play the first bit of the section. Once you’re through one loop, at the bottom, press create clip. Then just do it again. It seems to combine them.
@ToniBarth @FreakyFwoof @jcsteh I have direct touch in my quick settings menu. I assigned it to triple back tap. I only turn direct touch on to play. Otherwise it’s off. Double tap and hold the direct touch sections seems to work fine to adjust values.
This thing is allowing me to think differently, even though I have many too many sounds, a limited palette is proving to be quite fun. The random sound choices can really push you in directions you'd not think to go in some cases, like this one. @ToniBarth @jcsteh
@ToniBarth @jcsteh You can. I haven't even tried that yet, just been getting to grips with the built-in stuff. I forget how many sounds it has in it already, says somewhere but I can't remember.
@FreakyFwoof @ToniBarth @jcsteh That's a problem I had when I started to play with Komplete Kontrol for the short time I had access to it. Way too many sounds. I never got anything done, and that's without a bunch of third party plugins. I had the most fun with my Ensoniq TS-12, which is extremely limited by today's standards.
@FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh Can we adjust note positions after quantizing them somehow? Like the quantization moved my note into the wrong direction, do I need to re-record it all or did I miss something here?
@ToniBarth @FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh I think it is possible, but I don't know if it's accessible. There's an expand notes button. When you press that, I believe what's supposed to happen is it shows you the notes in the top section of the screen, and you can select them there and hold on the quantize button to apply transformations, like moving them, deleting them, changing velocity or octave, etc. But the note selection part doesn't read. Either that, or I misunderstood the learn note video. You *can* select some notes by pressing on the 1 through 8 buttons, but I haven't figured out how that works exactly and which notes get selected when I click what. Notes do get selected though, so there must be some kind of logic behind it.
@ToniBarth @FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh the same thing happens when you record an automation. I *think* you're supposed to be able to edit the automation you recorded, but I can't figure out how. So for now I undo and re-record the automation or the notes if I'm unhappy with them.
@FreakyFwoof @x0 @jcsteh I don't, but I do have a Lightning to Lightning + Headphones out and a Lightning to USB-C cable, I might be able to come up with an extremely weird cable thing that can work.
@FreakyFwoof @jcsteh In that case, it might be of interest to you to note that OpenMPT is fully keyboard accessible now. There's still a bit of object navigation when moving through the toolbars and between different parts of the app, but the actual pattern editor can not only be navigated via the keyboard, but actually presents meaningful info to NVDA at the very least. Might give it a go again, if you feel like putting the effort into it.
@FreakyFwoof @jcsteh Haven't personally tried the sample editor so unsure if making loop points and such is accessible, but you can always ape samples and/or instruments from other modules :).
