A part of the Windows Win32k GDI module has been ported to Rust and has been merged into Windows — which means Windows will soon be booting with Rust in the kernel! 🥳🦀

Rewriting the entire Windows operating system in Rust is not something which is realistic right now — the scale of the project is just too big for that.

Instead this is an experiment in targeting one of the most vulnerable parts of Windows, and rewriting *that*. And that’s been so successful, it’s actually going to be shipping soon! Which is a huge deal!

Currently my mind is being blown by this excellent article about abstract machine models and how programmers think, and perhaps yours would be too.

#Amberol 0.10.0 is out! After a tragic mess with a #GNOME run time update, and with lots of fixes accumulating over a development branch, I decided to spin up a release. Highlights:
- tweaked UI, to avoid confusing the waveform control and the volume control
- improved scaling of textures using #GTK 4.10
- ability to restore the last playlist at startup
- optional background playback

Plus the usual lots and lots of small fixes, tweaks, and performance improvements.

:boost_love: Hey folks - please boost for visibility!

:mastodon: The brilliant & hard-working 16-year old Lucas @moshidon is doing a great job building a fun and innovative fork of the #Mastodon #Android client.

💡 Take a moment to download and try it out, and if you can, toss him a little money to support & encourage his work!

Yeah. 🤦‍♂️ And it's even better when the app is for some public service. For example for municipal public transport... In a city full of tourists...

Are you tourist #traveling in Pisa? You would like to use an app to search for public transport easily? We say NO! Just fiddle with the web and be glad that the connection searching section is translated to English... 👎

Voice Dream Reader is creating a lot of confusion at the moment with its move to an annual subscription model. And they are making it worse for themselves because they haven’t gone where the engaged blind community has gone, to Mastodon.
If you haven’t done so yet, please sign the open letter calling on organisations that engage with the blind community to come to Mastodon.

Audon is a great real-time audio streaming service for the #fediverse! Think Spaces or Clubhouse, and you pretty much got it. You create a room for audio, where other people can listen to you, or just give them the role of speaker as well.

You can easily log in with your fediverse (Mastodon/Calckey/Pleroma) account, create a room, share the link, and you're ready to go!

Check it out at audon.space

iOS Shortcuts. Darcy Burnard, from the Maccessibility podcast, did a 10 part series on understanding and using shortcuts. If you are interested in iOS shortcuts, I would highly recommend checking out this series! You can find it on the ACB Community podcast. You can either join the podcast through your favorite podcast app, or go to the website link at the end. Now there is many different things posted to this podcast feed. But just do a search for Understanding Shorcuts, and this will filter them out. The series ran from January 23rd to April 10th. Thanks to Darcy for putting in the time and doing this series! I personally listen to them through my podcast app, but here is the website link if you want it. acb-community.pinecast.co. #iOS #Shortcuts #Tip #UnderstandingShortcuts #Blind #Voiceover @DHSDarcy

I’m very excited to see the discussion for the @Mastodon post migration issue has picked back up. This is probably the single largest gap between rhetoric and reality on #Mastodon.

It’s anecdata, but *every singe person* I mention account migration to immediately asks “oh, so my posts can move with me.” This is, unfortunately, immidiately followed up with disappointment that their posts stay behind. Coupled with the recent push to make mastodon.social the default for the iOS app… we need a way for users to move around SEAMLESSLY. We can make all the technical excuses we want, but if the process doesn’t work it’s not really account migration.

Until we have post support, we should probably say we have “social graph” migration, not “account migration,” or we’re really just lying and setting up people to be let down.

Since @talon is posting unfinished tracks, I figured I might as well do the same. My pride and joy, minus some of the instrumentation in the last section, is this. Eventually I want to finish this and put it on music services, though there might be a bit of Copyright permission tangled up in it. The sun is a deadly laser! @FreakyFwoof @jcsteh

This thing is awesome, however, you have to turn off voice over, so you can get the lag down! Really important. Crazy that it only supports wired EarPods for wired headphones. Wonder how much better those things can sound dragonscave.space/@serrebi/110…

This hearing test app is awesome. If you connect it to Apple health, you can use the audiogram it generates with AirPods. So cool. apps.apple.com/ca/app/mimi-hea…

Y'all people told me that Yudkowsky gave a m'fuckin TED talk. How is this even real life? Someone just decides to call themselves "a decision theorist" with ZERO experience, expertise or anything & start a cult where people worship his self proclaimed "high IQ", then advocates for terrorism to stop the impending #AGI apocalypse & New York Times, TIME, TED are just like whoaaaa. Genius. Tell us more. Not to mention all the awful stuff about assault written in this letter.
