We've reached a new peak for #adware intrusiveness.

More and more businesses that rely on ads and data collection for their revenue are struggling to prove the sustainability and profitability of their model. As a result, they're becoming more and more aggressive in ads and data collection. With the discreteness of their data collection programs gone long ago, their new goal is to make a world full of adware and spyware the new normal.

Google is now showing ads in the middle of your emails, and YouTube is disabling streaming unless you disable your ad-blocker.

But it's hard to think of an idea more intrusive than PlutoTV's new marketing stunt. They're giving away 500k smart 4k TVs for free, with an embedded Chromecast included.

The catch? Their 55-inch TVs will have a secondary 9-inch display physically soldered on top that you can't turn off and that displays ads 24/7.

Anyone else feels some echoes of 1984 at the idea of a display in your home that you can't turn off and whose content you can't control?

Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Let's be clear about something: Thunderbird, which operates under the wholly-owned subsidiary of MZLA Technologies Corporation, is funded exclusively by user donations. We do not have parternships with Google or any other major corporation, and we do not receive any of those profits with Mozilla Corporation.

#GNOME devs: should i (continue to) contribute patches that keep your apps working in other DEs, or should i stop? one role of an umbrella organization is to encourage consistency across sub-projects and i’m getting conflicting signals now that leave me hesitant/unsure.

in the past i’ve upstreamed changes to e.g. nautilus (gnome files) to keep it working for non gnome-shell users. those fixes were well-received and the maintainers were super inviting in a way that suggested they’d appreciate future changes in the same line.

but that gnome-control-center explicitly does not start outside gnome-shell is a strong hint that they don’t want patches that improve things for non gnome-shell users, and so i shouldn’t invest in upstreaming fixes like that anymore. how broadly do i interpret this?

El aislamiento ayuda mucho. Nosotros también lo hicimos con una ayuda del ayuntamiento que en nuestro caso hizo protestar a muchos vecinos porque la cuantía dependía de los ingresos, cosa que en mi caso no veo mal. @NVAccess @jcsteh Oh no! Please don't revert Commit 14701: NVDA now responds slightly faster to commands and focus changes. The latest commit removes this game-changing improvement. It improves all aspects of interacting with NVDA, so I can't imagine moving to the older/slower interaction approach with the upcoming alpha release. @ppatel 1. Is it at all possible that it is actually checking for updates, but because the dialog comes up in the foreground, you're unintentionally dismissing it while typing without even realising it came up?
2. Are you behind any kind of proxy and/or could your system have weird proxy settings somewhere?
3. If you manually check for updates, does that work?

Twice in the last month, someone has lamented near me that they have a bunch of learned-through-experience knowledge in their head, and they don't know how to draw it out into lessons to #teach their colleagues.

This is called "tacit knowledge". And fortunately, we actually know some ways to elicit it from experts & use it to train new learners!

I've appreciated Cedric Chin's blog series on this:

1. Searching my gmail for Hashimotos turned up results that only contained the word "thyroid." To make the search work as expected I had to put that single word in quotes. This offends my librarian brain.
