What | have learned, however, is that Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners. Meta positions itself as a “savior’, because especially the big instances have a very strong financial pressure. Users take it for granted that someone else is paying for everything. In these contracts, Meta also specifies the rules regarding the moderation. Instances will have the option of allowing ads from Meta or not (with the benefit of additional compensation). Smaller instances will have the possibility to register for a federation with Meta in a second step, but there will be no financial compensation and Meta decides if they will grant access based on their reputation.
Regarding Meta, I'm in the industry for 25 years and have a few friends who worked at Meta from the early years until recently. One s stil there. Regarding UFol, | was part of the disussion at the time, we held a vote at Emacs.ch P R S But don' take this at face value, obvisouly these admins have to sign harsh NDAS. But it sounded very credible and | could not imagine it going any ther way. Examples of big instances (from Japan | believe?) show that the long-term burdens are simply unbearable and operators just wait for the right moment to e 1donot critizise Meta for their attempt to use the favor of the hour to their ‘advantage. As a public corporation its theijob to make proft. As I said, its not them who will decide the fate of the Fediverse. ‘Overworked/stressed out admins, high costs for infrastructure, ongoing disputes ‘and moderation challenges are what threaten the Fediverse. It was not meant to ‘9row o fast before we find common solutions for these issues. What do you think?

During covid I had to buy cheap "Force basic" rear #bike wheel, as no other option was in stock or ready quickly enough. What a mistake. That was a really shitty wheel. The spike wires were constantly breaking one by one and I kept replacing them. Now 3 more wires broke at the same time and that pushed me to finally buy a proper new wheel. Finally. I am a bit affraid that the new wheel has only 24 spikes, old one used to have 32. I hope it can carry me...

BTW I tested the new wheel on a 98Km long round trip from Prague to Mělník and after that ride I realized, that i have mounted the cassette wrongly. The hub supports both 11 and 10 gear cassettes, but for a 10 gears cassette I suppsed to add an adapter ring. Luckilly I didn't throw away the package box and found the adapter. Also luckilly I didn't break the hub by using it without the adapter...

On Monday morning we (Mozilla) detected a very large crash spike affecting #Firefox users on Linux, specifically on an older version of a Debian-based distribution.

Лесные коньки! Как же великолепно они поют в лесной акустике. С самого детства их пение тесно связано с чащей. Младший брат моего деда работал на совхозной пасеке, которая находилась в центре небольшого леса. Я часто оставался ночевать в его избушке. Просыпался рано утром, дед уже работал с пчёлами, а я открыв окно бодрился от лесной прохладной свежести, которая моментально наполняла избу.

А потом уходил бродить и слушать птиц. Лес был чистый и светлый. И где-то в кронах деревьев заливался своей чудесной песней конёк. Как же это было здорово! Птиц было много, но именно он остался в моей памяти как главный певец утренней лесной чащи.

La messagerie instantanée aussi peut être fédérée

Je profite de ces temps de merdification de reddit pour essayer de faire connaître quelque chose qui me tient à cœur : XMPP (ou Jabber, pour son nom un peu plus sexy). Pour faire simple, c'est à Whatsapp (et Discord, etc.), ce que lemmy est à Reddit (ou ce que Mastodon est à Twitter, ou ce qu'internet est au minitel), bref, si vous êtes ici, vous devriez être sensibles à l'intérêt de ce truc.

Concrètement, c'est un protocole de communication. Il faut choisir (ou créer) une instance, s'y faire un compte (ou pas, les accès anonymes aux salons publics sont également possibles), et voilà, on peut tchatcher avec d'autres ~~blaireaux~~ personnes du monde entier !

Il existe également des passerelles vers les silos propriétaires, dont certaines que je développe. C'est comme ça que j'ai initialement découvert XMPP, j'aime l'idée d'avoir tous mes chats dans une seule appli, aussi bien sur mon ordiphone que sur mes ordipasphones.

Les points forts de XMPP selon moi :

  • léger (donc écolo) : un serveur peut tourner sur un petit raspberry pi avec un bon paquet d'utilisateurs, ce n'est pas du tout un souci ;
  • chiffrements de bout-en-bout : à la signal/whatsapp, facile à utiliser pour tout le monde, opengpg possible pour les plus nerds d'entre vous
  • tout le monde participe à l'évolution du protocole, les entreprises n'ont pas plus de voix au chapitre que les petits devs ;
  • amical avec la vie privée (huhuhu) : je n'ai pas les services google sur mon téléphone, et pourtant j'ai des notifications pushs, et ça bouffe pas particulièrement ma batterie.

Le moins bien :

  • Les clients traînent un peu à implémenter les fonctionnalités « modernes » (réactions, réponses, fils…) de messagerie instantanée… mais ça vient !
  • Les clients iphone un peu en dessous des autres, à cause de l'hostilité d'apple au devs. Là aussi ça s'améliore petit à petit.

Mon utilisation :

  • Un serveur prosody hébergé sur le VPS le moins cher d'OVH.
  • Les passerelles que je développe (sr.ht/~nicoco/slidge/) pour accéder à Whatsapp, Discord, Telegram, Signal, Messenger, Steam chat, Skype et Mattermost installées au même endroit. (EDIT: j'ai également biboumi comme passerelle IRC).
  • Conversations sur mon android dégooglé : ce client est parfaitement adapté aux noobs, grâce à lui ma famille (et quelques copains proches) utilisent mon instance sans trop se poser de questions.
  • Gajim ou Dino selon l'humeur sur mes ordis de bureau et Beagle sur le macbook (😭️) du boulot; ma femme non geek aime bien gajim sous windows aussi.
  • Mes copains avec iphone utilisent siskin.

  • une appli (liée à une instance) où l'inscription se fait avec numéro de tel/OTP par SMS (comme sur whatsapp/signal/telegram/etc.): quicksy.im/

@jason123santa @futureisfoss Nothing changed in the game itself, and the people who bought it were happy with what they got (he didn’t have an increase in refund requests). Rather, there were a number of customers who passed by the game previously because they felt like the previous lower price indicated it was of lower quality than it actually was.

@jason123santa @futureisfoss It is too early to tell exactly how this price change (from $1 to $5) will play out with Privacy Browser, but in the few hours since the change there have been three purchases on Google Play, which is on the high end for what it typically does in that time frame. If that pattern continues, it would indicate I had a similar problem, where people were passing by Privacy Browser because they assumed the low price meant it wasn’t that good.

While everyone is distracted by a billionnaire in a submarine, the #UK Parliament is voting on the final stages of the #MininumServiceLevelsBill. This will effectively make it illegal for anyone in what ministers consider "essential services" to strike. It removes a basic human right and is one of the most draconian laws of its kind in the world.

This is one of the more impressive bits of absolutely insane overdoing it that I've ever seen: (ab)using Blender's raytracing engine to make a simulated film camera, with simulated real optics, to take simulated photographs of scenes.

I can't even imagine how much GPU time went into these, but it's a delightful labor of love. Or maybe just as a way to keep warm during the long, cold Canadian winter.

This is hail. The recording doesn't seem to accurately show just how loud this hail was. I was very far away from the window. I thought to get closer but honestly I was pretty sure it might not actually make it, and I didn't want glass in my face. Also it's just the built in mics of the LSP4 and it seems to limit very heavily, but I also didn't have the time to set it up properly or even re-record since just after ending the recording I realized that our house was kinda flooding and for hopefully obvious reasons decided to ditch the recorder.
