There's a common false dichotomy about #Threads: cut them off, or leave it to user choice.

I can't speak to other software, but Mastodon offers a third option: limiting Threads. This can be done for all users of a server.

- You can follow Threads accounts after clicking through a warning.

- You have to manually approve followers _from_ Threads.

Note, however, that boosted posts will continue to appear in your home timeline:

Welcome Tatsuhiko Miyagawa as #curl committer 1222: github.com/curl/curl/pull/1253…
#curl

@anna with friends organized a private Christmas concert.
I made for them a #SongBook web called #Cacofonix.

It shows the introduction of performers, a list of songs, song descriptions, song lyrics and also tells you what song is now performed.

It's written in #TypeScript, frontend is #NextJs, backend is #PayloadCMS, data is stored in #MongoDB. It communicates using #GraphQL.

If somebody finds it useful, the code is here

Our next big update is #LibreOffice 24.2 in February (with new "year.month" version scheme). And here's one of the new features: extra description text in the Special Characters dropdown menu, added by Jim Raykowski: wiki.documentfoundation.org/Re… #foss #OpenSource

This is a fucking crazy team. I have worked with some teams! Michael and Tracy's EnterAct team, Al's Secure Networks team, Dug Song's Arbor team, Jeremy and Dave and my Matasano team; even when things were rough, I got to work with Erin and Patrick at Starfighter. I feel like I have a well-calibrated team-o-meter. This team is nuts. I get why people work at "startup" startups like this. fly.io/about

I had no idea how small this SanDisk memory stick was until it showed up today. It's not just small for a 1 TB, it's the tiniest I've ever seen. Imagine the typical memory stick with a USB A port, and then shrink the entire thing down so that a USB C port occupies the same percentage of surface area on the end. I haven't seen it hit 400MB/S write speed yet, but I've seen it hit over 200 and haven't done very much testing yet either. amazon.ca/dp/B0CLBNMBK2?ref=pp…

If you want to be critical of AI and would like your arguments to sound at all credible, this essay is a must-read. Many (most?) of the anti-AI arguments are pretty transparently bullshit and are seriously harming any attempts to mitigate any of the potential harms. #chatmail is not a replacement for Whatsapp in the traditional sense. It's a small machine that can be tweaked in many ways. The tweakability of the e-mail system is in it's DNA and practises ... that is the antithesis to WA if you like :) What drives nine.testrun.org, the first public chatmail service, is fully visible at github.com/deltachat/chatmail -- a minimalist config and setup, some python modules and tests, standard postfix/dovecot. co-incidentally pretty fast but there is a twist ;)

I just learned that my “What Is a Woman (a response)” essay was selected as one of Medium's 32 favorites of 2023: blog.medium.com/32-of-our-favo…

my voice; please help me assess it (related to voice dysphoria)

Here's a clip of me reading the poem "Ozymandias" (about 55 seconds)

If you can spare a moment, please let me know how you would like to describe my voice?

Does it sound "masculine", "feminine", or something different, or in between?

What other words would you use to describe it? Please don't second-guess what I may _want_ to hear; just don't think too hard and tell me how you think. Thankxx

Yo vivía muy bien y con lujos, todo poseía
No tenia que desear, pues todo fue de mi elección
Pero sin avisar como bomba aterriza un intruso

Today, @internetarchive filed our appeal.

Publishers coordinated by the AAP, have removed hundreds of thousands of books from controlled digital lending.

The publishers have taken more than 500 banned books from our lending library, such as 1984, The Color Purple, and Maus. This is a devastating loss for digital learners everywhere.

If this decision is left to stand, it will take away a library’s ability to lend books from its permanent collections to digital learners.

This is pretty cool news: the City Council of Paris is going to erect a statue of Louise Michel, to commemorate the 120th anniversary of her death, and it will be located just opposite the Sacré-Coeur on top of Montmartre.

This is clearly a political statement. The construction of the Sacré-Coeur started in 1875 and it formally meant to commemorate the deaths of the Franco-Prussian war and as a sacrifice of atonement for the "moral decline" that led to this disaster. But of course, the Paris Commune of 1871 (in which Louise Michel played a leading role) was equally seen as a symptom of this moral decline. And it was precisely on the top of Montmartre where this popular uprising began on 18 March 1871. The reactionary elite of Paris thus picked Montmartre as the construction site for the Sacré-Coeur, to celebrate the violent repression of the Commune and their own domination over Paris, and to punish the local population (whose public land had to be forcefully appropriated to make space for the basilica).

Version 0.4.0 (Codename „All Engines Running“) of Ltt.rs not only brings support for #UnifiedPush but also a UI refresh. The e-mail client for Android now supports Material U / dynamic colors.

#autocrypt #opensource #email #Lttrs

Note that Ltt.rs requires an e-mail server that supports #JMAP. (There aren’t many providers that support it so Ltt.rs is currently more for the adventurous / self hosting type user.)

Hi everyone!

We've just released a new version of #GoToSocial, v0.13.0 aka Spider Sloth!

You can get the release from here: github.com/superseriousbusines…

As usual, please read the migration notes carefully when upgrading to this version.

Thanks! Enjoy!

Highlights of this release:

  • Create, view, and vote in polls. It's been a while in the making but GoToSocial now has support for polls, aka Question activity types. You can create, view, and vote in polls using your client of choice.
  • Show unsupported media placeholders in incoming posts, where media could not be downloaded (temporarily or otherwise). No more dropped media on posts! You'll instead now get a link to the media on the originating instance, that you can click through in your (mobile) browser.
  • Mute threads that you're being overwhelmed by. Notifications for replies, likes, and boosts in that thread will no longer be generated.
  • Media cleanup scheduling. Previously media scheduling took place every night at 12am. With the new media scheduling settings in the config, you can customize the schedule to run it at different times and frequencies. docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/…
  • Support for setting instance language . You can use the new instance-languages setting to indicate one or more primary languages for your instance. docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/…
  • Support for language tags on posts. Language of posts is now correctly federated in and out of your instance. The language of posts is also shown on the web view of statuses and threads.
  • Gather and expose prometheus format metrics. You can now expose a /metrics endpoint to allow a Prometheus instance to scrape metrics about Go runtime memory usage, http request and database metrics, and more. docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/…
