Day (9 &) 10:
Added some residential landuse where it was missing and some minor details like street lamps, driveways and surface information.

Also did some mapping yesterday, but adding reference numbers to bus stops isn't the most visual thing (like mentioned before: (en.osm.town/@SeeandMap/1117115…)

If you add something you can see it, if I add Wikidata, Wikimedia or Wikipedia you can't see anything on the maps πŸ˜€

in reply to Robin van der Linde πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Day 12 (sort of):
Always fun trying to get detailed landuse for mixed-use buildings, also came across an interesting one for tagging: a shop selling (ethically sourced) animal hides (now tagged as shop=interior_decoration).
Also one of the reasons why I love mapping, you see something new every time.

Day 13 and 14:
Different place for this time, a small nearby village. Finally aligned most of the roads, some were off by about 5m, polished up the landuse and did some other minor touch-ups. Also spotted this interesting 'bridge'-like road near the start of a 30-zone, almost looks like traffic calming.

Day 16 (only slightly late): Added a photo to a parcel locker using @MapComplete (botsin.space/@mapcomplete/1117…)

Still one the easiest ways of editing POIs like this and adding photos on the go in my (slightly biased) opinion

Day 18 and 19: Added a penny press and a large waste bin using @MapComplete . Creating the penny press theme was mostly incidental because I found some mapped in #OpenStreetMap while looking for vending machines. Completely revived my collecting hobby...

Red Umbrella

An artistic protest action in Jerusalem marking 100 days since the hostages were taken captive. The message was β€œStop everything. Bring them all back”.

We walked down the street with β€œ100 days” signs taped to our clothes and at a given moment everyone froze in place. After 15 minutes we started chanting β€œNow. Now. Now…” (meaning β€œbring them home now” or β€œdeal now”) for several minutes. We repeated these steps twice.

#PDFs are a real problem for #accessibility. They are also a real challenge for any government working to provide a modern, digital experience for their citizens.

We have to build to alternatives to PDFs.

Hey Denver peeps/companies: want to sponsor an international conference that's coming to Denver, CO with potentially hundreds of open source developers, maintainers, designers, and community folks?

Check it out β†’ events.gnome.org/event/209/pag…

#Denver #DenverCO #Colorado #OpenSource #FOSS #FLOSS #GNOME #GUADEC #GUADEC2024 #Linux

in reply to Cassidy James

A reminder that in order to do these thingsβ€”to host contributors and have those exceptionally-valuable talks, workshops and hallway chatsβ€”we *need* sponsorships from companies that can afford it!

The GNOME Foundation is a non-profit that exists to provide a legal framework and governance around GNOME’s activities, but it’s also not some endless coffer of cash (there are annual financial reports that tell you that!).

And this is open to more than just Denver-based companies; anyone can sponsor!

in reply to Cassidy James

If you work for an organization using, contributing to, or interested in the success of GNOME or related technologies, ask if they can sponsor #GUADEC2024!

Sponsors get:
β€’ Brand visibility across the event w/an international audience
β€’ International recognition in photos, streams, and recordings
β€’ Increased sustainability of GNOME tech
β€’ Great access to a potential talent pool
β€’ The satisfaction of helping a non-profit open source project

This article (cited on Slashdot) suggests that the policy decision by Amazon Web Services to charge for IPv4 addresses could accelerate migration to IPv6.
My ISPs (both cable and mobile) support IPv6, as does my server's hosting provider, so I personally made the switch to a dual-stack configuration quite some time ago. Those who haven't (and who use AWS) now have an additional financial incentive.

Good news: AI will not be possible without a breakthrough in energy production, like nuclear fusion. It seems humanity will not be destroyed by evil AI as long as we don't invent nuclear fusion.

Bad news: the AI tech bros see this as a reason to invest into nuclear fusion.

there is another problem: nuclear fusion could solve climate change, does that mean we will get AI when we get clean energy and solve climate change?
Better AI will lead to more better phishing and identity theft scams and the people will be vulnerable to authoritarians that promise to solve it with digital identity, which could very well become a nightmare.

I'd bet the companies offering to solve the problem are the same ones that created it.

The thing I don't think folks quite get about their current assessment of LLMs is that the only reason they're so cheap is that major sources of capital are subsidizing them outrageously. OpenAI, for example, loses money hand over fist to its customers. Google's commitment to 0 cost LLM API calls is also a massive cost center.

Like Uber, that can't continue forever.
