How to out compete any major tech vendor right now: work in the same space as their core products - but just don't put anything AI in the product.

They're all so distracting tickling their own bollocks with AI right now they've completely lost focus on their core products and real customer needs.

The Release Candidate (RC) of NVDA 2024.4 is now available for download and testing. We encourage all users to download this RC and provide feedback. Unless any critical bugs are found, this will be identical to the final 2024.4 release.

@cub80_appleby Not a problem! We encourage as many people as possible to test these builds, particularly as we get closer to release (as we are now), but it's not for everyone and that's fine. The more who can test it though, the more likely we will pick up if there are any issues

in reply to Archos

I absolutely do not understand what problem this "fediverse:creator" thing is supposed to solve, or why it has a whitelist of domains that are allowed to say your name.

You’re chasing uptime because you’re concerned about high availability.

I’m chasing uptime because I’m not convinced the machine will come back up if it’s power cycled.

We are not the same.

Whoops, git 2.47.0 just shipped with a significant bug in the `git maintenance` subcommand that causes it to segfault immediately, because of a gap in the test suite.

The git project is doing an excellent job of responding to this in an exemplary way: fixing the bug, amending the test suite, and directly questioning their dev practices to solicit insight into their own process blind spots. And they're doing it all in public.

Well done.

in reply to Ben Zanin

And by the way, git-maintenance is a relatively new git feature¹ (well, 2020-ish) that lets you set repo maintenance tasks to run on a schedule, such as running `git gc`, more aggressive object repacking, even prefetching of remotes that move quickly so that your morning `git fetch` is already primed to run nice and fast, with a minimal delta. It's simple, very useful, and worth using.

In #MacOSSequoia, there is now a default (non-VoiceOver) keyboard shortcut to access a context menu. In most cases, pressing Control-Return will reveal a context menu for the selected item, with no need to interact first. #TipTuesday

Even with years of experience working with Rust, I still find lifetimes extremely confusing to work with. I thought I had a decent grasp on them, but again and again I find myself stumped.

I saw your question on the forum, read the answer, didn't understand a thing 😂

Fuck you web devs and designers. This shit is literally your job and you’re bad at it.

Open source: you all should use open source and private services because we’re not a corporation out to exploit you or your data.

Disabled users: hey, your registration edit field is not labeled so I can’t use my adaptive technology to register or even use your platform. Could you fix it, because, right now, the mainstream/corporate offering has taken accessibility more seriously and I’d rather use a tool/service that I won’t need to struggle with in order to operate.

Open source: what exactly do you expect? We can’t be expected to make things accessible for you, so you can either fork it yourself or just not use our software/services. We’re a small team and corporation has more money than we do so they can devote more time and effort to accessibility. You can always fork the project though and make accessibility yourself!

Disabled user: well, I can’t code, so it looks like I don’t have any other choice but to go back to using this corporate offering that at least took the time to label their registration field correctly and actually took my request more seriously. Oh well, maybe open source tools just aren’t for me.

I think it would be more useful to name and shame specific projects than to describe all of open source this way.

Had a funny conversation in the shower rooms at work yesterday morning with another bike-riding commuter who I have been seeing a lot more regularly…

She upgraded her truck to one of those massive Raptors and now can’t fit in ANY of the parking buildings so is having to ride her bike to work.

Readers: I died laughing.

Does anyone know how hard it would be to get my hands on a board/computer with an Intel i860 processor? Note that I am not talking about the 860 chipset, but the failed processor architecture.

Since I only have about 40 followers, I would appreciate as many boosts as possible as it is hurricane related. The Iphone 14 and above has the capability to send messages via satellite. You have to install IOS18 then swipe down from top right to get the utilities screen. You can then do a demo by touching the satellite icon. Evidently it only works if you do not have cell data or wifi available.

ABOUT THE .IO DOMAIN KERFUFFLE
this is one of those intersectional moments, many of you white folks in #tech need to learn from

not only is the .IO a geolocated internet TLD based on British colonial territories;
the whole origin and dispossession of Chagos people is a read:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagos…

what makes .IO extra sketchy is the creation of the domain itself:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/.io

so, .IO LITERALLY exists for EU/USA capitalists to profiteer from slavery, colonialism & genocide.

I mantain a couple of #Android applications both on @fdroidorg and #google #playstore . Now Play Store asks me a document (personal ID card) to verify my account, otherwise it will be closed in October.
I don’t feel I should disclose #personaldata to a giant like Google, so I’m considering migrating my users to #F-Droid. How should I do it? There's already other people doing this? There's any material (e.g. a webpage) to point my users at that explains why and how they should install #fdroid and reinstall my apps from there?

#gafam #opensource #mobile #mobileapps

in reply to Daniele Verducci 🧉

I'd suggest you to prepare for #reproducibleBuilds – so F-Droid (and/or #IzzyOnDroid) would ship the APKs signed by you, allowing for a rather seamless switch. If you give me a link to your "forge repos" (Codeberg, GitLab, GitHub) of the relevant apps, I could take a quick look – and might be able to help out a bit (as much as time permits). Even if it is just "sorting things out" and "getting you started".

I just released a new version of #Hieroglyphic, this version replaces the classification algorithm with a machine learning model trained on the data previously used to classify symbols, improving classification speed and overall accuracy (although some symbols are now classified less accurately due to lack of good training data).
To improve the training data, it is now also possible to submit recognized symbols (this is opt-in).

Thanks to @Blobsta, I got my focus display to work with Narrator, no problem. NVDA, nope, doesn't load it.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

Oh and and did I mention you need to restart Nvda, then fix how you want the display to connect, then hope NVDA detects it correctly, then if that doesn't work restart it again? Jaws has the same issue. So, at that point, I bought a Mac. My best investment, ever.

in reply to Beatriz Adriana

Yo sólo leí un libro suyo (1q84) pero me gustó mucho, la verdad. No sé como será el resto.

Slack started doing this thing recently where if they detect that your onblur focus (like with NVDA) has moved relative to your keyboard focus to a different form, your focus gets jumped back to the point of that last keyboard-focused item. This is actually not bad, at first disorienting, but it does solve the issue whereby if you're editing a message and exit focus mode, you can end up in the wrong edit field when finding yourself again if you're not careful, so, I'll take it.
in reply to Tamas G

I suppose if you got used to it for the used case it would be OK. I usually hate this when it happens. Let me make my own decisions :-) but it might be beneficial for inside of Slack for all I know.
