Good morning everyone! As you all know if you follow me, I'm a sighted dev whose focus is on accessibility for the blind. I got into the space of accessibility and learned how important it was because I joined an accessibility jam and got first hand experience speaking with blind gamers. So I'm inviting you to the type of jam that changed my outlook! So join the discord for "Games for blind gamers" and ask your questions!

Calling all #blind #Windows users! I'm looking for recommendations on #accessible SSH clients that work well with #1Password. I've been using Windows Terminal, but I'm not entirely satisfied. What do you use for SSH on Windows? #Accessibility #AssistiveTech #ScreenReader #BlindTech #tech

I use sshas part of the windows terminal regularly. What about it disatisfies you?
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Weird behavior with 1Password. When the popup to authenticate with 1Password comes up I have a hard time navigating it. My screen reader doesn't seem to want to type in the box to enter my password.

@mnot what’s the difference between the server stack detection proposals and the old Server: header?
in reply to Tony Finch

@fanf @mnot to properly detect the server stack today you need to check a few other headers as well, but yeah, it is essentially that header.

To people who feel like there aren't many people on mastodon/fediverse, please actually try to be social. So often I see "there's nobody here, i'm going to bsky/threads/whatever" and then when I look at the account's profile on the home server (to make sure I can see all posts and replies), I almost always see very few posts in recent past and even fewer replies. The Fediverse's culture (and mastodon's software) is built around more traditional social networking, like we used to do before algos.

Folks, have you encountered this weird NVDA issue? NVDA does not enter focus mode when pressing enter on the Gemini edit field. I can duplicate it, and it doesn't affect JAWS 2025.
github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…
@NVAccess
in reply to Amir

I don't know Gemini, but it may be the same issue I find at Youtube comment edit field. Try pressing up arrow until you land at the page element imediately above, then press tab; it should focus on the edit field and enter focus mode.
in reply to Cleverson

@clv0 Yes, Tab and SHIFT+Tab work, but it's not a solution as Enter should work as expected.
in reply to Cleverson

@clv0 Moreover, if you have disabled Automatic focus mode for focus changes - which I've done, Tab and SHIFT+Tab don't work either.

@RaccoonForFriendica the first stable version 0.1.0 has finally been released! 🎉🎊🎉

Here is the changelog, compared the latest beta:
🦝 feat: make crash reports opt-in (disabled by default);
🦝 feat: add option to keep app bars fixed while scrolling;
🦝 fix: transition between images/videos in detail view;
🦝 fix: unmute videos in detail view;
🦝 enhancement: update licenses;
🦝 chore: update dependencies;
🦝 chore: update user manual.

If no blocking issues are reported, I intend to make it easier to install the app (by distributing on other alternative stores, e.g. setting up the submission procedure to F-Droid), translate the UI and/or user manual into more languages, etc.

Wish me good luck and remember to #livefasteattrash!

For some reason people fleeing the sinking #Twitter / #X ship for #BlueSky don't seem to be aware of the fact that crypto bros at #BlockchainCapital bought a huge stake in the company just a few weeks ago. Like these are basically the same crypto bros who just helped #ElonMusk buy Twitter. They might even be literally the same people (I strongly suspect they are but I'm too lazy to check). Either way #BlockchainCapital was co-founded by #BrockPierce, who also brought you #Tether, AKA the company that Trump's transition team chairman manages $120 billion for. Pierce is also a friend of the #Netanyahu family.

You don't have to take my word for it. Here's the official press release: bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…

Moving to BlueSky is not an escape. Growing a base there is just putting in a bunch of work to create a platform that will be co-opted by crypto bros as soon as X breaks in half.

in reply to Václav Pašek

Musí mi to holt stačit. Jinak ten internet šlapal dobře a 190 to je pecka cena.
in reply to Archos

in reply to Václav Pašek

in reply to Archos

Před nedávnem k nám Kyslíci natáhli optiku a pak obcházeli agenti T-debila a Kyslíků s podobnou nabídkou, s časovým omezením fixace na 3 měsíce 🤔.
Ale třeba to není tento případ 🤷🏻‍♂️.
@archos
in reply to Archos

@archos Mám ten T-Mobile fiber, pevnou veřejnou adresu a jejich router sem si nechal přepnout do bridge:-)

The SMTP email protocol is 42 years old. In 1982, the SMTP protocol was defined (and implemented on ARPANET a year later), and in the decades since, it's lit the way for what the Internet *could* be - was originally supposed to be - where we rely on open standards and massively scalable and robust distributed protocols instead of proprietary centralised platforms.

In recent years, we've had an object lesson in why we need to go back to that original vision.

So I keep going back and forth internally about this. I need a new laptop, and with things going the way they are, I should probably get one sooner rather than later.
I keep going back to the idea of getting a Macbook again, then running a Windows VM mostly for web browsing. Most other things I would want to do are viable on Mac OS.
But what is the state of VMWare Workstation and Mac OS Sequoya? Is Parallels still a better experience with a more annoying setup regarding accessibility?
in reply to Patrick Perdue

I have never once used parallels, sticking to fusion my entire Mac life. I just last week upgraded to Sequoia and Fusion works just fine. That's all I've got.
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof I've heard from a few people that Parallels is less laggy when it comes to audio response. Have never actually used it, but at least four people have said that. Not sure if it's worth the extra expense, but I also don't know how long VMWare Fusion will last, given all the stuff going on with Broadcom, and they just made it free after laying off a bunch of people.
in reply to Patrick Perdue

Oof. Yeah, Parallels behaved really well for me when I was using it on this M1, mind you, this is a computer from 2020, not exactly the newest. I think that's when they first came out, correct me if I am wrong though, please. I removed parallels, though, because windows, is windows, and it takes up too much space.
in reply to Patrick Perdue

They've also continued to update it despite it being free. I thought they'd free it, then end-of-life it, supporting only that but I've seen at least one update since it went free, perhaps two.
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof Yep, but who knows how long that will last? They've lost most of their big enterprise customers.
in reply to Patrick Perdue

No idea, but it's still there for now. I'm not paying for Parallels personally.
in reply to Andre Louis

I have a licence I no longer use, but they want to pay for the upgrade too, so I just. Well, haven't used it after I re-installed this Mac. Expensive!

We should have an entire preliminary election day in September. Like the PSATs. That way all the dumbfucks can cast their preliminary vote, then go google "how tariffs actually work," then read all the new articles about what Donald Trump's actual policies are, and THEN cast their real vote.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert…Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies,
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings
i’m so cooked
lol
lmao’
Nothing beside remains.”

Just, why? Why post just a random link. NO context, no label?

  • I think people will click it to see what it is. (33%, 1 vote)
  • Good apps show previews of all links (33%, 1 vote)
  • The URL makes it obvious, e.g. Youtube. (33%, 1 vote)

in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes especially on mastodon, so heavy with content warnings and accessibility, I'm surprised there's no markdown and opportunity to give a link a title. The ... ethoi? Ethoses? of the distributed network approach and simplicity of writing in markdown would, you'd assume, be broadly compatible.

Me:

"Have you ever had a write error? Got one last night on my X-T3 and just lost 5 different shot because the error disappeared as quickly as it could"

(good thing that I had a second card in the second slot, otherwise shoot would have been a write off)

If you think for a minute I didn't preorder this as soon as I heard about it, well...

A brilliant new Black Mirror-style sci-fi thriller by the star of Red Dwarf and Fully Charged.

PRE-ORDER NOW
Shadow
The Ghost Camera is a gripping sci-fi thriller in which a British hi-tech start-up accidentally discovers an alternative use for one of their inventions – by creating a tiny, momentary black hole in a lab, they can capture images that defy all attempts to explain them.

Morris is a laboratory janitor in Oxford and is perfectly happy with his lot.

When Morris accepts company stock as overtime pay, he never expects to be caught in the middle of an extraordinary discovery – a camera that captures images from through time, not space.

Told through Morris’s own observations, but also through clippings from newspapers, tech magazines and websites from all over the world –
The Ghost Camera offers a Black Mirror-style parable about where technology might lead us.

Reminder that if you get jemalloc errors on software running on Asahi, that's because the jemalloc maintainers refuse to make jemalloc builds portable to all ARM64 systems by default.

Some downstream projects also refuse to override the default for their builds when the issue is raised with them, like Telegram Desktop.

Unfortunately, choices like these are sabotaging the ARM64 Linux ecosystem by explicitly making binaries non-portable, and if people don't listen to our feedback, there is very little we can do to help. These "build for the host page size" approaches are as non-portable as -march=native, but people seem to think it's okay when you're breaking ARM64 systems and not x86_64 systems for some reason.
