With #pixelfed gaining popularity and people experimenting with it, the project could probably benefit from a PHP developer to implement the native export/import function. As it is, it's rather funny that you can import an Instagram account archive, but you can't transfer a Pixelfed account to another server. I would have done that for mine to shift out of the rather overloaded pixelfed.social instance to another one..

Huh, since I've literally never been afforded the luxury of paying a capital gains tax and thanks to CBC's "like I'm a five-year-old" explanation, I realize I had some misconceptions about how it all works.

Before, when I thought it was an actual tax on investment earnings, 66% seemed fantastic. Now I'm wondering why it's not 100% and why the Liberals made the first quarter million exempt from the increase.

Conservatives call on government to back off capital gains changes due to legislative limbo

cbc.ca/news/politics/capital-g…

Just to clarify: the tax change make that any capital gain over 250K is taxes at 66% (ie the tax is calculated on 66% of it instead of 100%) while the first 250K are still taxed at 50%.

You employment income is taxed at 100%.

Just to show you were conservative stands.

Capital gains a real-estate sales, stock and other financial instrument, and few other things.

Why are tech people suddenly so int homeschooling?

As someone who was homeschooled for 13 years, I think it often boils down to a desire to *opt out of being around the average person*.

This impulse is understandable but maybe not very healthy.

To engage with your main point: It seems to me that living in a tech hub also functions as a way of opting out from interacting with "normal" people. That's one reason I decided to move back from a tech hub (Seattle area; I used to work at Microsoft). Now, I spend most of my time in my apartment (I work at home), so I can easily get into a bubble anyway when most of my conversations are online.

There's software that Just Works, and then there's Frustrating Software.

htop Just Works. LuaRocks is Frustrating Software. I wrote them both.

As a user and an author of Frustrating Software, there's a very particular brand of frustration caused by its awkward workflows.

I wonder if non-developer end-users feel the difference, or if the end result is just the same: "this doesn't work".

I've seen people not realizing they were being manipulated by slick ill-intentioned software.

I've seen people dismissing awkward well-intentioned software outright with "this is broken".

If users were looking at a person performing a task in front of them (say, an office clerk) rather than a piece of code, everyone would be able to tell the difference instantly.

In the end, all we can do as authors of well-intentioned free software is to be aware when we ended up building Frustrating Software.

Don't be mad at users when they don't "get it" that it's "because reasons".

Don't embrace the awkwardness retroactively as a design decision; just because it can explained and "that's how it is" it doesn't mean that "that's how it should be" (and definitely don't turn it into a "badge of honor" to tell apart the "initiated").

Why do we still need stupid crap like this to clean the freaking keyboard?

I get it, people are probably stupid and can’t turn on a MacBook with just one button anymore. But at least make an option to use the Touch ID button as the power button, not the whole keyboard.
