I suppose if there is one positive thing about the current environment here, it is that people in the media and in political life who think being blind automatically makes you ignorant and incompetent feel emboldened to be more upfront about it. That allows us to tackle it head-on.
For years, in various capacities, I have campaigned against the use of the word "blind" to equate with these things, because it subconsciously reenforces stereotypes about blind people.
It is very difficult for a blind person to find employment, sometimes because of lack of training, and often because, despite training, we are deprived of opportunity due to common misconceptions. It is a struggle to find people who believe in us, and the need for public education is ongoing and real.
In the US, the Federal Government has in recent years been a place where qualified, competent people who happen to be blind can thrive and be recognized for the talented people they are.
So it is deeply disappointing that a capable public servant who is blind is being ridiculed and discredited not for anything he said, not for being bad at his job, because he clearly is not, but merely because his blindness is being used as a weapon and a tool of derision. This release from the National Federation of the Blind is so important. Blind people cannot allow this sort of discourse to go unchallenged.

Another almost shocking experience with an onboard electrical outlet. ⚡

Apparently many people travel with chargers manufactured so poorly that the pins hold stronger in the outlet than in the charger itself.

I don't have any insulated tools with me, nor have I seen any staff to report this to, so this will probably stay like this for a while in the ABv6 part of #NS #VIRM 8640.

V drevnich dobach iOS vyvoje s UIKitem zabiralo 90% casu debugovani ruznych vizualnich glitchu. Clovek si hledal hodiny a hodiny na SO, aby pak nekde napsal

dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ...)

a vse fungovalo.

Dnes je to jednodussi. Vidite UI glitch. Zaplatite $200. Deep research 5 minut crawluje StackOverflow, fora, Swift blogy aby pak vyplivnul... a vse funguje 🤷

Zlaty vyvoj pro web.

🍪 A 2023 study concluded CAPTCHAs are 'a tracking cookie farm for profit masquerading as a security service' that made us spend 819 billion hours clicking on traffic lights to generate nearly $1 trillion for Google

Ah well, hiding near an island is not good if you're a submarine anyway.
Gosh I haven't played this properly in decades. Had a brief revisit when I relicensed the new computer but before that it was on my Windows 95 machine.

I'm giving up on the idea of running my reading updates on the web.
So for now if you care to get regular updates on my reading, feel free to subscribe at buttondown.com/SeansShelf
If it works for the majority, we'll keep it. if people want a different system, we'll talk about it.
Updates come weekly on a Wednesday.

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

“Evaluating overlay-adjacent accessibility products”

The very fact that a digital accessibility accommodation is a product is a sign that you might not be the customer and, even if you are, only for as long as there’s money to be made.

"An administration effectively fronted by Elon Musk – a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” – is so touchy about the language that we use that scientists are now self-censoring. It’s so prescriptive about what things are called that it’s blocking journalists from events for continuing to refer to the Gulf of Mexico instead of the Gulf of America." theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Now I wonder where HTTP2, and eventually HTTP3, falls in the tradeoff between minimizing bloat and keeping essential features. For example, for a program that only needs to make a few HTTP requests, or just one, would it be OK to disable HTTP2 support? Disabling HTTP2 in the reqwest crate saves about 200 KB of x64 machine code in a size-optimized release build.

But by doing this, would I be preventing an eventual phase-out of HTTP 1.1 that some might want to do?
