Please do criticise #Mozilla – we need an independent, privacy-preserving, feature-rich web browser, not another tracking-infested piece of garbage software.

However, the frequently expressed opinion that “Firefox should be abandoned because Mozilla is the worst bullshit company” is not helpful. Without #Firefox, all your favourite forks (Tor, LibreWolf, Zen…) would struggle to survive and the Google-Apple complex would fully control the browser market.

New Mozilla TOS diff. This is what they just removed:

* Does Firefox sell your personal data?

> Nope. Never have, never will. And we protect you from many of the advertisers who do. Firefox products are designed to protect your privacy. That’s a promise.

The purpose of the new TOS appears to be to enable them to do this - such as for their advertising and AI sidelines.

I haven't mentioned it here, yet, but in the last few weeks I:

- Swore in and got my New Zealand citizenship
- Got my New Zealand passport
- Renounced my US citizenship

Things have finally slowed down where I can just absorb all of that. Giving up my citizenship was never part of the original plan but more and more it's felt like I was never moving back, especially as I watched the US from afar the last 8 years. I wrote about it here for folks curious: sophiajt.com/stopped-believing…

The Brigadier’s Fourth Doctor Adventures debut bigfinish.com/news/v/the-briga…

After reading these medium term goals, I'm honestly glad I stopped donating because I know some corporate thing will sponsor them now they will/want to add AI, even an AI Chat bot, to NVDA.

The below are just 2, but there's more AI stuff they have planned.

• Integrated AI image description: Free, secure, performant, private and VI-focussed on-device AI image description available out of the box.
• Help chatbot prototype: Exploring the development of an AI-powered chatbot to provide instant support and answer frequently asked questions about NVDA.

The second one is particularly nonsensical.

NV Access

The impetus for doing any of this is 100% user wants, not corporate sponsorship. Re the chat bot, yes I tend to feel the same, I'd rather refer to the manual or material - but others (probably younger than me!) like the chat bot style - so it's worth looking into. With Image recognition, like the existing add-ons, the intent would be "something is better than nothing" - not to replace people writing proper alt text - and yes, licensing of any AI model would be a key consideration
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess Not to mention instances where the expectation isn't that good alt-text should be written, but the app should be accessible from a usability standpoint, but very much isn't. But waiting on the app to become accessible isn't an option since the thing you're trying to do with *insert inacccessible app here* can't wait. But before you ask for some sighted assistance you'd like to at least get an idea of what's on the screen so you know what to ask for.
in reply to Holger Dyroff

Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!

A solid indication that the #AIBubble has passed its peak is #NVDA posting massive sales and revenue, but their stock still diving because the market doesn't think it can continue growing.

in reply to Mike McCaffrey

Thanks! We're aware NVDA is the stock code for NVIDIA, althoguh to be honest, aside from in posts like this I've never seen anyone refer to it & doubt anyone actually searches for it as a hashtag looking for NVIDIA. I figure if we can each use hashtags which refer to their own area of interest, then people looking for stock / AI trend information, won't get bogged down with screen reader stuff - and people looking for screen reader info won't need to wade through finance info :)
