I’ve been working on OSS projects for almost 15 years now. Things are simple in the beginning - you’ve got a single project, no users to worry about and all the time and the focus in world.(think)

#rustlang hot take: We should rename .unwrap() to .or_panic(). (And .expect() to .or_panic_with().) "Unwrap" is a terrible name for the panicking function, especially since we also have things like .unwrap_or() and .unwrap_or_default() which never panic.

Maybe I did something wrong when I installed Foobar2000, but I don't have any volume controls at all. I keep finding posts online about people mapping volume keys, or limiting volume, or adjusting playlist volume, but I have nothing. What am I missing?
@BorrisInABox @Scott That I get, but it just seems like the options would be there for the sake of parity. They are in playback > volume in one place, so I'd expect to find them in that same place in the main UI. If nothing else, binding keys to them by default would make sense. James has to be right that there's a way to control volume that isn't accessible. No volume control at all out of the box seems like a strange choice.

I had another training at my office for people interested in joining the magical free world of #OpenStreetMap. Every time I have different discussion from the attendees, even I do the same workshop. This time was not different.The main focus was now around the need to contribute to #OSM since it's not so widely used. A great topic, indeed!
I have been using for a long time, contributing for a year or two. I notice that even though only the dorkiest of individuals I know knowingly use it, I see OSM data pop up discreetly embedded in a lot of other projects. AllTrails. Package delivery notifications. I think we all use it, actually. 😁
@tartley I agree. I had the same conversation with them with examples. But again compared to the general use of the non-free maps there is a huge cap.

Habe gerade die relativ undankbare Aufgabe acht Exceldateien zusammenzuführen. Sie sind alle identisch und wurden von verschiedenen Abteilungen teilausgefüllt. Die Exceleigene Funktion dafür tut einfach nichts. Sobald ich mehr als eine der Dateien öffne, friert JAWS ein und meldet nach gemessenen vier Minuten zurück, dass die neu geöffnete Datei nicht reagiert. Hätte ja gerne einen Leistungsstärkeren Computer. Aber dieses Denken, dass das absolute Minimum für Bürotätigkeiten schon ausreichen wird, macht mich langsam wahnsinnig.
Wieviele Zeilen haben die Dateien? Bei ungefähr 32k Zeilen ist nämlich Feierabend bei Excel.
Dann bist du drüber und Excel kann das nicht mehr. Excel ist damit das falsche Tool für den Job.
ooops, ich muss mich korrigieren, das Limit ist mittlerweile deutlich höher.
(Was aber nix dran ändert. Excel ist bei der Zeilenanzahl das falsche Tool. Das muss nämlich *alles* in den Arbeitsspeicher.)

@marco_m_aus_f Eigentlich war es auch das falsche Vorgehen. War aber vor meiner Zeit, dass das festgelegt wurde. Von daher muss es gemacht werden.

Python bietet reichlich Werkzeuge zur Bearbeitung von Excel- und Word-Dokumenten. Wenn das eine wiederkehrende Aufgabe wird, lohnt sich vermutlich ein Python-Script dafür.

Ich habe für meinen Job zu 50% einen richtig schnellen Laptop nur damit ich gelegentlich mit riesigen Excel-Dateien umgehen kann.
Zum konkreten Problem: wenn sie alle identisch sind, dann nach CSV exportieren und dort zusammenführen? Kann dann ja als komplette Datei wieder in Excel geöffnet und weiterbearbeitet werden und braucht deutlich weniger Rechenleistung.

My nephew who is 8 is desperate to get a phone for Christmas. He's started sending me WhatsApp messages from his Mum's account asking how old I was when I got a phone. It was 18 by the way. I still think he's too young for a phone so he'll be disappointed.
Lol I feel him. I started using my moms phone around that age, for calling and listening to literally 1 song on YouTube. In 5th grade I started getting into WhatsApp, and doing that on her account was already annoying lmao. I got one for christmas in 5th grade, so with, 11/12? Not exactly sure. And it was some refurbished iPhone X. So yeah, I think 18 is way to old. And I think awareness and good competence with tech and stuff these days is important, knowing how to use it for your advantage, SOS etc. But yup, once you start finding out about YouTube, TikTok etc you're trapped, so don't let that happen to early for sure.

Any data that is collected on servers will eventually leak or be abused otherwise.
By design, no one can enumerate #deltachat profiles which are private and not published on any server. Conversely, #chatmail relays do not see or collect private data or metadata.
But wait, there is more :)
We are currently evolving end-to-end security protocols and UX to **survive an attacker fully taking over a server**. The attacker shall not even be able to message users, let alone impersonate anyone.

The Cloudflare outage was caused by a Rust ‚.unwrap()‘ panic, undistinguishable to the non-connoisseur from a segfault.
(Dont @ me with undefined behaviour on mythical systems you cannot name)
The effective difference between segfault and unwrap is that the former would have caused a wave of unbearable Rust smugness in my timeline.
This way, it‘s just a coding error. We all do those.💁🏻♂️

No, there was no leaked database of 3.5B #WhatsApp users. Researchers from Vienna simply used the contact discovery method with all possible phone numbers to get contact data of 3.5B users. They informed WhatsApp who kinda fixed it by setting rate limits for contact discovery and the researchers deleted their collected data. Read the paper instead of clickbait :)

Ca. 15 Jahre nutze ich nun #ubuntu auch beruflich fast ausschließlich. Aber erst dieser Tage habe ich so richtig gecheckt, dass man dem Terminal sagen kann, in welcher Fenstergröße es starten soll:

It would seem the CC company enjoyed all charges, totaling over $3,300, as they posted a $2,500 credit limit increase offer to my account meer hours later. LOL. The experience tuckered me out, so as soon as I got home, I just set the most expensive two-pound-bag of goods I've ever acquired in my life down, and crashed out for a few hours. I'm now up, and ready to provision and transfer services to the new hardware.
I basically did that last year, then a couple of months later, bought a Macbook Pro M4 Max. Jerks didn't even offer me a credit increase, not that I wanted one anyway,

@svenja Auch ich habe überall, wo's geht, die erweiterten Vocalizer-Stimmen; bin froh, dass die "Anna erweitert" auf der Watch wieder geht. Nur auf dem BTSpeak (Raspi) habe ich den kompakten Viktor.
@SandiPavkovic @svenja Ich mochte sie auch mal. Und dann kamen immer mehr Aussprachefehler dazu, die mich in die Arme von Elloquence getrieben haben, obwohl ich sie nicht besonders mag.
@WestphalDenn @SandiPavkovic Mich an sich auch, aber die Elo in NVDA ist so oft einfach nur broken nach nem Update, dass ich doch lieber wieder die anna nehme.

@WestphalDenn @svenja @SandiPavkovic Prinzipiell ja, allerdings muss die neuste Tiflotecnia für jeden PC aktiviert werden und man hat nur 3 Aktivierungen frei. Und wenn man einen Rechner, auf dem NVDA einmalig portabel ausgeführt wird, aktiviert, darf man nicht vergessen, die Lizenz danach wieder zurück zum Server zu übertragen.
Beim alten v2-Add-On war die Lizenz noch eine Datei ohne Online-check, für den portablen Einsatz sehr gut geeignet.

@WestphalDenn @svenja Ja, diese überzüchteten Wörterbücher. Mir ist ja lieber, wenn eine Sprachausgabe z. B. Gendermainstreaming knallhart nach deutschen Regeln ausspricht (dann höre ich wenigstens die Schreibweise), als wenn die Wörterbücher bis zur Unkenntlichkeit angereicherte Aussprachen enthalten. Ist natürlich eine Gratwanderung, aber gerade von Abkürzungen sollte man die Finger lassen. Acapela ist berühmt-berüchtigt dafür.
@SandiPavkovic @svenja Sehe ich auch so. Ausschlaggebend war bei mir übrigens die Ansage von Aufzählungen. Aus zwei Punkt vier wurde regelmäßig zwei komma vier. Das macht mich nach wie vor wahnsinnig und ich habe nie eine Möglichkeit gefunden, das leicht zu ändern.

Es gab mal so ein Tool namens LiteX, ja, ist entstanden, weil der Lehrer LateX nicht barrierefrei fand, das führte aber dazu, dass dem armen Jaws Wörterbuch so viele Sachen hinzugefügt wurden, dass sämtliche Texte unlesbar wurden. also warf ich es wieder runter. @SandiPavkovic @trison
@svenja @WestphalDenn @SandiPavkovic Oh ja, das habe ich auch mal ausprobiert, als ich mit der Darstellung von mathematischen Formeln in elektronischer Form experimentiert hatte. Das kam zu der Zeit auf, als JAWS mit dem Math Player diese wunderbare Darstellung von Formeln im Web bekam, was aber nur auf englisch gut funktioniert.

Aber so richtig ans Laufen bekam ich es nicht, das Chaos mit den Wörterbüchern passierte aber durchaus auch bei mir. Ich hab das vor ein paar Jahren gemacht, während ich auf die Rente gewartet habe und viel Zeit zum Spielen hatte. Heute habe ich kein Windows mehr. Daher könnte ich das auch gar nicht mehr nutzen.

being a good girl and buying the bolts I need to secure my new lathe to its stand and the stand to the floor, instead of going "I have a lathe now, I shall just make bolts" and probably dropping a lathe on my foot in the process
Gemini 3 is out, but NVDA still doesn’t enter focus mode when pressing Enter on the Gemini edit field. Tested with Google Chrome. The work-around is pressing Insert+Space on the edit field instead of Enter. JAWS doesn’t have this issue.

S tátou jsme zkoušeli Linux v době Ubuntu 6.06 a to mu ještě nesedlo. Myslím, že tenkrát jsem mu tam dával Kubuntu a nepomohlo, že měl ještě nějaké Windows only appky. Teď je situace jiná v tom, že jde o nový stroj, Gnome je o galaxii dál než bylo tenkrát KDE a tisíce světelných let přes Windows co se týče použitelnosti. Tak jsem zvědavej, zda si na to zvykne.

Jinak dělal jsi v tom GNOME nějaké úpravy? Nemáš tam Dash2Panel? Standardní GNOME pro něj byla až příliš velká změna?
