So, just to avoid any confusion, when you run Windows 11, the product you are using is Windows 10. The Windows version is 2009 (which of course doesn't fall between versions 2008 and 2016, duh). So if you are using Windows Server 2022, the product is called 2022 but the version is 2009 because those two numbers seem like the same but they aren't.

The "Windows Current Version" for Windows 11 is 6.3. But don't use that number because Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 were also version 6.3. Windows 8 was 6.2.

Or if you want, just use build number 22621, also known as 22H2. The version 22H2 update is also called the "Windows 11 2022 update" because there never was a 22H1. But at least they changed their naming scheme and didn't call it Fall update because it was spring in half the world when it came out, heh.

I am looking for someone to take over the alt-text.org project. There's a working prototype and lots of low hanging fruit to start with, and I'll be available for any help you need.

One larger task is to rewrite the backend in Rust. It's primarily CPU bound and Node is not ideal. I've just released an implementation of the image matching algorithm used in Rust, which was always the biggest hurdle: github.com/alt-text-org/image-…

If you'd like to hear more, please DM.

Boosts welcome

The #Fedora Project uses @matrix for our instant messaging needs (with IRC bridges also).

While the default experience is with #Element, there are several other neat Matrix clients you can use.

#Fractal, @neochat, and #Nheko are some great options to check out!

Then you can check out Fedora's Matrix room as well: matrix.to/#/#fedora:fedoraproj…

@Friendica Support

so after reviewing the knew really, really, fucking high aira retail pricing structure for 2023, I had a friend ring aira and we put together a document detailing the individual pricing after offset. Since they don't want to be transparent? Let me help you out. please review the notes at the top of the file as well. Boost, and I don't care if they scream at me for publishing this. Musing about the end of Pinafore development and official Mastodon UI accessibility shortcomings, long post
Re the just boosted post about the end of pinafore development, I completely understand the situation but I'm still sad to see it go. Now Mastodon isn't Twitter so it'll probably work for months if not years to come, but IMO this is going to leave particularly Windows and Linux users without a good desktop or desktop-like client (Mac OS is going to be served by Mona very well once it gets feature parody). But for the foreseeable future I'm probably going to stick to Pinafore as my main desktop client because it offers a ton of logical keyboard shortcuts, has excellent autocomplete support and reads posts in a very clear way even including media descriptions. The official Mastodon UI is almost there in that aspect, but the speech feedback you get when navigating with its keyboard shortcuts has many shortcomings (see github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…). Maybe this is the right time for this to get more love in either Mastodon or at least one of the forks like hometown, though that won't help anyone using something like Pleroma or its forks. #noxp

Probably not going to surprise anyone, but I'm stepping back from Pinafore. Thanks to everyone who followed along with this project over the years!

Aira has introduced new prices for 2023, by stating that the users won’t pay fully the prices listed on their page, but would have to call in to know what the service actually costs. Highly complicated for a service which really could make lives easier. aira.io/plans-and-prices

As a hobby, I hack instant messaging gateways from various chat "apps" to XMPP (XMPP is to Whatsapp what the fediverse is to Twitter). Slidge (the name I gave to my hobby software thingy) has been mostly usable for me for a few weeks, so I decided to talk about it a little in my blog, by pretending some milestone has been reached and calling it a "release candidate".

Did you know what are so called "Desire paths"? No no, this is not a psychology term. A desire path is when people very often walk on a terrain which is not a typical road, but the more people go, the more conveninet the road gets.

- signal, telegram, whatsapp: revokable, "per device" access ~token
- discord, mattermost: slidge login process = "get your access token from the web UI via dev browser dev tools" 🤡
- facebook, steam: optional 2FA (but right now, password is stored slidge-side anyway, possible area of improvement). they used to have "revokable application password" but I've had less success with them recently
