So, just to avoid any confusion, when you run Windows 11, the product you are using is Windows 10. The Windows version is 2009 (which of course doesn't fall between versions 2008 and 2016, duh). So if you are using Windows Server 2022, the product is called 2022 but the version is 2009 because those two numbers seem like the same but they aren't.
The "Windows Current Version" for Windows 11 is 6.3. But don't use that number because Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 were also version 6.3. Windows 8 was 6.2.
Or if you want, just use build number 22621, also known as 22H2. The version 22H2 update is also called the "Windows 11 2022 update" because there never was a 22H1. But at least they changed their naming scheme and didn't call it Fall update because it was spring in half the world when it came out, heh.

Ich gehe davon aus, dass Pleroma genauso klappen sollte wie Mastodon. Misskey habe ich noch nicht getestet. Bei Hubzilla bin ich mir unsicher, da sie eine andere Art verwenden, mit foren zu arbeiten. Dementsprechend wäre es zu testen. Bezüglich Lemmy bin ich unwissend, was das angeht.

Bei "Kann mir Beiträge aus seinem/ihrem Kanal schicken" muss auch ein grüner Haken sein und dieser muss vom Forum gesetzt werden - geht automatisch wenn die Kontaktbeziehung bestätigt wird. Wenn diese Bestätigung aus welchen Gründen auch immer ausbleibt kommen keine Nachrichten dort an.

Nette Theorie. In der Praxis sieht es laut meinen Statistiken (android.izzysoft.de/stats) so aus, dass fast jede zweite Bezahl-App mit Trackern und jede fünfte noch mit Werbemodulen daher kommt. Meine Empfehlung daher:

Seriously though, we've been working hard on taking ownership of Flatpak packaging and distribution, and the plan is to also offer Beta and Daily Flatpak channels.
Firefox Sync is awesome and I use it all the time. It'd be awesome if #Mozilla would make it easier to have a self-hosted option for this too. I know it *can* be done (I played with it a bit) but it was very hard to get going and I eventually had to give up.
We've implemented the technology behind it to securely sync things like your email accounts, passwords, tags, email filters, contacts, and more between Thunderbird clients on multiple PCs.
cool! When i first heard about Firefox sync in thunderbird, I didn't know what the point is, but seeing the address book would be syncable means I could stop relying on Google contacts which would be awesome. Will this be coming to the android app as well?

Re the just boosted post about the end of pinafore development, I completely understand the situation but I'm still sad to see it go. Now Mastodon isn't Twitter so it'll probably work for months if not years to come, but IMO this is going to leave particularly Windows and Linux users without a good desktop or desktop-like client (Mac OS is going to be served by Mona very well once it gets feature parody). But for the foreseeable future I'm probably going to stick to Pinafore as my main desktop client because it offers a ton of logical keyboard shortcuts, has excellent autocomplete support and reads posts in a very clear way even including media descriptions. The official Mastodon UI is almost there in that aspect, but the speech feedback you get when navigating with its keyboard shortcuts has many shortcomings (see github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…). Maybe this is the right time for this to get more love in either Mastodon or at least one of the forks like hometown, though that won't help anyone using something like Pleroma or its forks. #noxp

I think that got closed? My main issues with the web client are the "article 1 of 20" every time I navigate with J and K, and the fact that I always have to go to the first toot to start that kind of navigation (this last part happens sometimes in Pinafore too, but much less)..

I considered contributing to the official client instead of Pinafore, but I'm fairly sure that would require me to set up all the server stuff locally, since the front-end is tied to its instance. Setting up the Mastodon server is just not something I'm willing to invest time in, so the barrier to entry is just too high.

Unlike stable versions, beta versions on F-Droid are not marked with a “Suggested” label. You have to manually select such a version to install it. To get update notification for non-suggested versions you need to check ‘Settings > Expert mode > Unstable updates’ in the F-Droid app.

@daniel That's really nice to read, thanks! Slidge tries to XEP-comply as much as it can and I'm happy to fix stuff if it doesn't. Bridged contacts and groups should not be differentiable from other #XMPP entities; it seems to be the case as it (mostly) just works with #Conversations (for me, at least).
@aenea Yes it does! Telegram is actually the walled garden that is the most OK with third party clients: they provide a rather easy to use open source lib: core.telegram.org/tdlib/

I remember fighting with the purple shade of lib and custom builds from source... Concise documentation and an introduction/summary to fresh eyes is a key feature.
I forgot to mention #quicksy for android, which is a #conversations version with "whatsapp-like' onboarding on their server (you receive an SMS code that acts as a one-time-password). I'm not fond of "your phone number is your username" *but* I'm grateful that quicky exists, since a lot of non tech savvy folks really like this. It's still federated XMPP underneath.
All SMS codes are archived by the operator. is it possible to track the account associated with an sms code? Does server record my #phone number? I am concerned about the way accounts are stored / logged on the server. If my phone number is stored somehow then I am not interested with that solution. Thankx, #XMPP #Android
@ErcanErdemArdal Yes, credentials are stored server side with slidge. Although, just to clarify, I am not administrating a public slidge instance. Slidge is a software meant to be installed by XMPP server admins. #selfhosting an #XMPP server is relatively easy and cheap, and that's the option I recommend to anyone that wants to try slidge. Maybe some XMPP servers admins will propose this to their users one day, but right now, all slidge users that I know of are self-hosters.
@ErcanErdemArdal Oh, I realise you were probably talking about #quicksy and not slidge in this toot, sorry about that. Yes, Quicksy JIDs (#XMPP addresses) look like +555123456@quicksy.im, so if you want an XMPP account not linked to your phone number, do not use Quicksy but rather #conversations or forks like cheogram or blabber. I also don't like to see my phone number in my JID *but* a lot of users appreciate it. It makes the user experience closer to whatsapp, signal, telegram, etc.
It could be nice indeed. I guess we could ~sortof maintain e2ee with omemo. Probably the first step would be to have a "xep0114 with encryption" somehow. Prosody is probably a good playground for attempting to implement some experimental server-side module like that. I am unsure of the security implications behind letting users run a whole namespace@some-custom-domain.example.com
The main "objection" I see: if you're able to run a component, why not run the xmpp server too? I see some little benefits, like not needing a static IP, possibly no need to worry about dns and certificates... but overall running prosody alongside gateway components is not much overhead. Who would be interested by such deployment option?

@Chartrux The "technical" philosophy of the bridge part is very similar. In fact, both for whatsapp and messenger slidge relies on (reverse engineered) libs from the mautrix project. I even had a one-line pull request merged in maufbabi (the facebook lib), wow! One difference though, I don't plan to run a large-scale paid instance like beeper.com. Slidge's amateurism is a feature .
@0 For what it's worth, the maintenance effort of an XMPP server is waaaaay smaller than an email server, especially if you don't allow account creation.
That said, perhaps the real issue is with services that don't support authorisation grants (e.g., #OAuth2). It's more acceptable to store a limited grant on someone else's component than to share your actual login details with them.
