Big changes to the Oliphant blocklists, via @oliphant

oliphant.social/@oliphant/1121…

Summary:

  • A revised Tier0 list (based on @Seirdy's Tier0 list, @gardenfence and the @iftas DNI list)
  • Other lists going away
  • git archives of blocklists from .social and other sites Oliphant used to use also going away

And interesting:

"You should still be able to use the Tier 0 Oliphant list and get a respectable list of blocks, though you'll notice certain more contentious entries like qoto and threads won't be on that list anymore"

Looks like at least one corner of the fedvierse is welcoming our new surveillance capitalism overlords!

“Looks like at least one corner of the fedvierse is welcoming our new surveillance capitalism overlords!”

That’s a pretty disingenuous take.

I have 5 sources, down from 10. Should I maintain a list populated by only 5 sources just to keep threads on the list?

Anyway… if Threads shows up on Seirdy’s list or Gardenfence it will show up on mine. It’s not on theirs currently, which is why it’s going to drop off the list.

I'm #ActuallyAutistic and I know food preparation is difficult for many folks in the community.

But learning to feed yourself is a skill that has cascading effects (I get severely depressed if I don't feed myself food I like). Not to mention, not everyone has the $$ for takeout

I've been sending this 'sad bastards cookbook' to everyone archive.org/details/sad-bastar…

It focuses on 'boil water and eat' and 'ingredients that don't go bad'

It's time again for me to ask if anyone knows of any long term projects or roles in illustration and design!

I have over 16 years experience in working within remote/distributed teams and agencies and am efficient in using Adobe CC, Figma, Webflow, Miro. I've done everything from icon and logo/brand design, editorial, interactive brochures and forms, character design.

1/ Janské lázně den čtvrtý.
V šest hodin jsem už pil kávu a pak to začalo. První byla masáž krku a šíje. Přišel ohromnej masér a pořádně mě namasíroval.

I read the part about HTTP3 and realized that _still is a thing_. I found out about github.com/openssl/openssl/pul… in fall of 2019 and I was so disappointed in openSSL and their OMC but it _still is not fixed_! really amazing. It makes HTTP/3 for "normal people" so much harder

In the conversation @ahl and I had with @simon in January, he mentioned work on adversarial attacks on LLMs that proved surprisingly universal. On today's Oxide and Friends, we will be joined
by Nicholas Carlini, one of the authors of "Universal and Transferable Adversarial Attacks on Aligned Language Models" to talk not only about this specific work, but about adversarial machine learning in general -- and how it guides thinking on LLMs. Join us, 5p Pacific!

Today's #MythologyMonday theme is metalworking. Coincidentally I was digging into the myth of Hephaestos, and came up with some tidbits.

When Zeus threw Hephaestos off Olympos (to punish him for trying to shield Hera from his wrath), the blacksmith god landed on the island of Lemnos and broke his leg.

The fun bit is, apparently the island was inhabited by fearsome pirates. They nursed Hephaestos back to health and gave him a home.

I want "Hephaestos and the pirates" to be a thing 😄

How much money do you think the United States has spent since 1945 on the Cold War? Sometimes they ask this question then from the back of the audience comes in answer ‘billions and billions‘. A huge underestimate – billions and billions. The amount of money that the United States has spent on the Cold War since 1945 is approximately 10 trillion dollars. Trillion, that’s the big one with the ‘T’. What could you buy with 10 trillion dollars? The answer is: You could buy everything in the United States except the land. Everything. Every building, truck, bus, car, boat, plane, pencil, baby’s diaper. Everything in the United States except the land, that’s what we have spent on the Cold War.

So, now let me ask: How certain was it that the Russians were going to invade? Was it 100% certain? Guess not since they never invaded. What if it was only let say 10% certain? What would advocates of big military buildup have said? We must be prudent. It’s not enough to count on only the most likely circumstance. If the worst happens and it’s really extremely dangerous for us we have to prepare for that. Remote contingencies if there is serious enough have the prepared for. It’s classic military thinking – you prepare for the worst case.

And so now, I ask my friends who are comfortable with that argument, including the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, why doesn’t that same argument apply to Global Warming. You don’t think it’s 100% likely? Fine. You are entitled to think that. If it’s only a small probability of it happening since the consequences are so serious, don’t you have to make some serious investment to prevent it or mitigate it? I think there’s a double standard of argument working and I don’t think we should permit it.

Many people affected by the recent blocking of #Telegram in 🇪🇸 Spain are looking for alternatives - especially decentralized ones.

#Snikket is one of those alternatives, and fully open-source. However, our Spanish translations are lacking, which can lead to a poor experience for our #hispanohablante friends.

Thinking about the article in last boost - the Fediverse can usefully be seen as an idea that existed when people believed in it. Every time someone said "it's not Mastodon it's the Fediverse, don't forget" the thing called Fediverse was existing.

However that never became rooted in any significant communities apart from among a small number of enthusiasts.

Communities don't grow because of people who are excited about building communities - community happens while you're making other plans.

Today, we have opened five non-compliance investigations under the Digital Markets Act.

It concerns:

🔹Alphabet’s self-preferencing in Google Search
🔹Apple’s rules on steering in the App Store
🔹Apple's choice screen for Safari
🔹Meta’s ‘pay or consent model’
