Friendly reminder, if you stopped masking due to social pressure, anxiety, or for any other reason, and you wanna mask up again, you absolutely can! Lots of folks never stopped masking and some folks are starting again because of the cold and flu season on top of national COVID spikes.

I just got a call from someone claiming that my number was associated with an online swag order. The thing is, I couldn't tell if it was AI or not. It seemed to be at first, and the way the guy laughed was very suspicious. However, he also checked my number in a very human-like way. I'm generally very good at picking out AI audio. It's scary that I couldn't manage to do so this time.
in reply to Alex Hall

hey I need to verify you're not AI, could you tell a racist joke please?

I didn't think this was possible but the real disappointment of the day isn't Apple Intelligence – it's the "updated" Magic accessories.

They literally just…swapped the Lightning port for USB-C. No multi-device pairing, no design changes, nothing else.

The mouse still has the charging port at the bottom too. 😂

I mean, seriously. Who OK'd the kind of user experience that will yell at you, every time, for no reason if it even slightly disapproves of your language. What kind of bubble are you living in?

Dear Microsoft Edge,
You do know that keeping around 15 older versions of yourself after updating isn't polite, right?
Maybe don't do this?

The lab computers in my #CCNA course have a strange issue. Neither #narrator or #NVDA will speak. I can hear the music when NVDA starts, but there's no speech. I've tried two of the laptops in here, and they do the same thing. Any idea how I can fix this? My instructor doesn't think the IT people would have uninstalled the Microsoft voices, but I can't imagine what else might have happened here. I might just have to spend money I can't afford for a USB-C to ethernet adaptor to use my own device.
in reply to Justin Ekis

You've got to love the IT guys playing about with settings they don't understand. Good luck trying to work out what they did. Last time I was in that situation on my work laptop it took months for us to finally uncover what setting caused the weird behaviour with my screen reader.
in reply to Justin Ekis

I can't think of what they might have done - though removing the Microsoft voices might do it? I've never tried - TBH, not sure if NVDA would roll over to eSpeak-NG or not - could you try a portable copy of NVDA on a memory stick (set to use eSpeak-NG)

#Catima 2.32.0 is out!

This is a minor release which fixes the #Stocard importer (again), adds an accessibility feature to switch between the displayed card with the volume keys (when enabled in settings) and contains some small polish like adding some icons to the add dialog box.

Coming soon to an app store near you :)

Sadly, pkpass support didn't make the cut (I wanted to push this out quickly given the Stocard shutdown).

The pkpass progress is good but the branch misses the zip handling fix that caused the Stocard issue and doesn't properly load images yet. It also needs some further testing to make sure no new issues were introduced as it required quite a lot of refactoring.

If anyone *really* needs pkpass support *now*, building yourself an APK from the branch is probably safe :)

One more tag to add: #reproducibleBuilds (my builder just confirmed, and will publish the results soon™) :awesome:

Oh, and of course this new release should show up at #IzzyOnDroid in less than an hour now…

After 6 years – we finally got to close our longest-running #accessibility ticket in Wagtail, github.com/wagtail/wagtail/iss…. Thank you @mush42 for reporting this initially. We benefitted immensely from your accessibility expertise and first-hand experience with a screen reader ❤️

This was the ticket I created our "accessibility" ticket triage label for. 38 of those still opened, 165 closed. Kick-ass!

in reply to Thibaud Colas

For me personally – this was a definite inflection point in my career, as I started investing way more into accessibility expertise. For Wagtail, we followed this with a project for a large govt agency to do even more testing and improvements of the CMS admin. Then got our accessibility team started. Then the accessibility team for @django. An #ATAG audit for Wagtail. Yearly reporting on our accessibility. There’s a long way to go but the journey’s been great already 🌈

Happens here in Canada w/ Post Merdia [not a typo, they're quite literally shit], as almost all of Canadian media have decided that the leader of the official opposition is justified in not obtaining a security clearance and that the LPC needs a new leader.

MSM DRIVES THE NARRATIVE.

Pollsters asking, on a scale of 1 to 10 how much I hate Trudeau? [I don't]

None ask about how concerned Canadians are about PP NOT having a security clearance.

What’s confusing is that it mixes anecdotal evidence with studies, on diff versions of Whisper, wrapped in a range of different software, using a variety of audio types. Audio quality, length, number of voices, speech patterns all matter a lot. And the longer the recording the more likely it is to have errors

In 1939, 20,000 Americans rallied in New York's Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism -- an event largely forgotten from U.S. history. A NIGHT AT THE GARDEN, made entirely from archival footage filmed that night, transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States.

One of the dumbest things I’ve heard this election cycle is someone saying not to make blanket statements about Trump voters because someone who cares about me might be a Trump voter. And no, by definition no one who’s voting for Trump cares about me.

Can we please stop gagging for touch-screens on every single little thing? It's infuriating.
in reply to Andre Louis

I had a #WeirdDream the other night.

touchscreens, if backlit from within at a certain frequency, allowed their content to be felt as well as seen.
So you could buy a 6 inch eInk display for about 30 quid and make a Braille display out of it.

Obviously it was just a case of then rewriting the firmware of every little thing with a screen to make it show Braile instead of print.

From the NVDA 2024.4 release notes: "All lines of cells will now be used when using a multi-line braille display via HID braille." I wish I had a multi-line display to test this. I wonder if this means NVDA can show multiple lines of text at once, or that the current line will go to multiple lines of braille if necessary? If I had a 5-line display and had code open, would it show multiple shorter lines of code all at once? Now I'm sad all over again that we don't have a paper-sized display.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Those are the ones I know of, and each has its problems. Orbit: expensive, loud, uses extra space for an uncomfortable keyboard. Monarch: the cost of a car. Canute: very heavy and loud, slow to refresh, still not cheap, aimed at stand-alone setups more than use with a computer.
in reply to Alex Hall

I used an orbit 20 for a while, I think I could get used to a multiline one. I can't afford a monarch. and the volume (in terms of sound and mass) of the Canute makes it impractical.

This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is a lot to read, and also we missed the toot about last week.

In short:
- F-Droid client 1.21 was released, but you should wait for 1.21.1 before you update
- there were some bugs in DAVx⁵, Nextcloud and Tailscale, so be careful in updating these too
- we're working together with @Codeberg to get our builds from apps hosted there working again
- any much more
