Fixes for a critical rsync vulnerability (CVE-2024-12084) have been released for Stable/Bookworm, Testing and Unstable. Oldstable/Bullseye is not affected. Fixes for other lower severity CVEs have also been released in the same update and can all be tracked at security-tracker.debian.org/tr…. The fixed Stable version is 3.2.7-1+deb12u1 and the fixed Testing/Unstable version is 3.3.0+ds1-3

Huh, since I've literally never been afforded the luxury of paying a capital gains tax and thanks to CBC's "like I'm a five-year-old" explanation, I realize I had some misconceptions about how it all works.
Before, when I thought it was an actual tax on investment earnings, 66% seemed fantastic. Now I'm wondering why it's not 100% and why the Liberals made the first quarter million exempt from the increase.
@hub Right, according to this CBC explanation, it's not even a tax just taxable income. If they were in any way interested in making how it works more clear, you'd think they'd flip it around and call it 34% free money.
Just to clarify: the tax change make that any capital gain over 250K is taxes at 66% (ie the tax is calculated on 66% of it instead of 100%) while the first 250K are still taxed at 50%.
You employment income is taxed at 100%.

Nah, no worries. I believe it was Microsoft's intent to have removed it in the 24 H2 release and this seems to have been accomplished. You can, of course, grab the needed files to preserve them but I don't think it's worth the trouble.
I know this is just a point in your demonstration of how the arguments for and against home-schooling cancel out, but thanks for calling out the problem of learning disabilities and neurodivergence. I think the same applies to other disabilities as well.
For example, I'm legally blind. My parents never home-schooled us, but I did attend a private religious school with my siblings from 8th grade through senior year, because my parents and teachers judged that I no longer needed the full special education program at the public school I previously attended, just one lesson a week from an orientation and mobility teacher. I think they might have been wrong. I still had more to learn about independent living skills especially.

Kudos for implenting that labels can be applied using keyboard only. One suggestion: since the length of the displayed label (in the mailbox list) depends on the length of the sender email, for senders not in the contact book the label text is truncated to only two initial characters. Maybe we could just have color blobs there (without the text) instead?

I recognize it as a user myself when using software by others, and unfortunately I recognize it in my users when they fail to use my software. I know the answer in both cases is "well, the workflow is awkward because reasons". There's always reasons, they're always complicated.
I wonder if I would know that were I not a developer myself.
Well-intentioned awkward free software still beats slick ill-intentioned proprietary software any day of the week. Both cause frustration, but the nature of the frustration is so, so different.
The latter pretends it Just Works, and the frustration is injected for nefarious reasons.
The frustration in the former is an accidental emergent behavior. I feel empathy to that, but it's no less frustrating.
I wonder if non-developer end-users feel the difference, or if the end result is just the same: "this doesn't work".
I've seen people not realizing they were being manipulated by slick ill-intentioned software.
I've seen people dismissing awkward well-intentioned software outright with "this is broken".
If users were looking at a person performing a task in front of them (say, an office clerk) rather than a piece of code, everyone would be able to tell the difference instantly.
In the end, all we can do as authors of well-intentioned free software is to be aware when we ended up building Frustrating Software.
Don't be mad at users when they don't "get it" that it's "because reasons".
Don't embrace the awkwardness retroactively as a design decision; just because it can explained and "that's how it is" it doesn't mean that "that's how it should be" (and definitely don't turn it into a "badge of honor" to tell apart the "initiated").

@MonkeybreadSoftware we now store a null terminator ourselves to the last byte of the buffer unconditionally on Windows - which works fine since we don't use the return code from the snprintf
IIRC it doesn't overflow, it just doesn't nul-terminate. I seem to recall that we had to have a wrapper around MSVC snprintf back at a previous job, to make it behave like a C99 snprintf.
Remember that snprintf() wasn't standardized until C99, and that the older compilers had their own implementations that weren't quite compatible with each other.
@malwareminigun but they fixed it in later versions, so clearly it could be fixed without that big repercussions which is odd. And leaving an output buffer without null-termination surely has to lead to trouble every once in a while...

To be honest, not much happened in 2024. Sure, there were a few interesting developments, but compared to 2022 and 2023, last year was quiet. The most shocking news: @Gargron is stepping down as CEO of Mastodon and transferring all trademarks and copyrights to the Mastodon nonprofit. That’s huge.
Pixelfed & Meta Drama
There’s been a rush to Pixelfed due to recent moderation changes at Meta. Meta got caught removing links to PixelFed on Instagram, sparking an uproar. This backlash even caused PixelFed to trend on BlueSky.
Meta tried to walk back their actions, claiming it was a “mistake.” Let’s be real: they only backpedaled because people noticed. If Meta throttles PixelFed links while boasting about Threads joining the Fediverse, they undermine trust. They know this, so they reinstated the links.
Elon Musk & TikTok Rumors
Another major story: Reports suggest Elon Musk might buy TikTok. If the U.S. government bans TikTok, ByteDance will have to either shut down U.S. operations or sell. Increasingly, Musk looks like the buyer. Of course, nothing is certain until the deal is signed, but if it happens, expect a mass exodus from TikTok.
Loops.Video is Coming
The final bombshell: @dansup, the mind behind PixelFed, announced the website for loops.video will go live this week.
I started using Loops today through TestFlight, and I’m blown away. It’s smooth, intuitive, and genuinely fun to use. Many were skeptical that a TikTok-like experience could work on an ActivityPub-enabled service, but I’m telling you: loops.video is amazing.
Here’s how I know it’s not just me: I gave it the “kid test.” I handed my phone to my 11-year-old daughter and said, “Have fun.” She was riveted. If an 11-year-old gets this excited about Loops, this platform has serious potential.
The Future of Video on the Fediverse
I’ve said this for a long time: video is critical for the Fediverse to succeed. Text-based platforms work for older generations, but kids live in the world of video. If we want the Fediverse to thrive with future generations, video has to be a major component.
PeerTube is great and has its fans, but it doesn’t hit the same way loops.video does. This is a different experience entirely.
