In light of the message on this pillow, I'd like to issue my thanks for your service. curl was very useful to me while I was troubleshooting a particularly difficult server bug this week. The bug related to a specific combination of headers and only happened on http/2, not on http/1.1, and curl was the tool I needed to easily switch between header values, http versions, and urls to nail down the parameters of the bug. I still haven't identified the root cause, but I was able to work around the issue (the fix was to set a cookie and perform a 302 redirect to refresh the page in a certain situation) and get a webpage back online. From one of those billion people using your service, thank you!

When they started adding all of this nonsense I went into my about:config to explicitly set "browser.ml.enable" to "false", but apparently even doesn't save you, as the new "features" will just not give a damn. 🫠
I personally am not happy about it. On the other hand I see that ordinary users, I've installed Firefox for, appreciate it. "Hey, I can have ChatGPT in the side panel instead of going to chatgpt.com!" I'd rather have this for them in Firefox than losing them to browsers which gave up user's privacy to AI services completely. As long as there is clear borderline between what AI gets access to and what it doesn't and it's possible to turn it off I'm content with it.

The only remaining part of my computing world that is not yet on Linux is my audio/music production work. Formulating a plan to try and make a move there, too.
Would love to connect up with anyone doing this seriously on Linux. I'm totally okay with re-tooling a bunch of my software stack, but I'm trying to figure out a good, solid audio interface that will work well for serious use under Linux.
Ripping DVDs and CDs is somewhat annoyingly work, but I value buying things once, rather than renting them, and having my media library under my control and unrestricted.
Sometimes I wish my work had a (locally hosted) LLM that could answer questions about Git projects. When did this function get added? Has this branch been merged, and is it in staging yet? Who changed this line most recently?
I know there are commands for all of this and more, but I don't always remember them. Plus, some things are surprisingly hard, such as seeing if a branch has been merged.
@miki We can, but those aren't local. Anything I give them may as well be public. When I use such a system for work, I change table names, remove credentials, and so on. There's no way I'm giving one of those things our entire in-house program complete with git history.
@miki Docker: yes, but we use self-hosted Gitlab for hosting and our image repository. No Github, Slack, or remote CI. We use Google for documents and other services, so Google Chat is our in-office messaging system. I think that's the only big company we use for daily workflows.
What industry, if I may ask? Not that many people go to such extremes.
We work with governmental organizations a lot, and European ones at that, and even we aren't that strict. All of our actual deployments are on prem, but we use Github, Docker.io, Google, MS Teams and a few other things for software dev.
@miki Powersports parts distribution, of all the random things. But our team is small, and our software is almost all used in-house. We're not making publicly distributed apps, we don't need extensive CI/testing setups, we're not spending tons of money on high-end servers to compile huge projects. Basically, we're small enough that all self-hosted is actually viable. I'm also lucky enough to have both a manager and a boss that understand IT.

I read general news and current events only once per week (sundays, usually). If it’s important enough I’ll find out in person sooner organically. I rarely read or engage in any general news on social media, only in person or official news outlets. At worst I’m out of touch for 7 days. I find this makes my me happier and more at peace and avoids the shock driven news cycles.
The last 2-3 days there was a significant slow down with message sending, sometimes 15 seconds, via the default #chatmail relay .... Wasn't a CPU/RAM or other resource problem but a software configuration / implementation problem. After some hours of debugging it was solved by providing the "speed-adjust" proxy option to #postfix. message sending should be back to sub-second. No message was lost. Lesson learned: just search for "speed" in postfix docs first (and fix the offending module later).

For some silly reason, I looked up "Shure Beta 58" on Ebay. Lots of listings for new Beta 58A's for $33 to $37. I'm thinking "Clone, clone, another clone, probably the same clone..." I bet you're basically getting a Behringer XM8500 and paying almost twice the price for it. A real Beta 58a goes for the much not worth it for what it is price of $199 or so.
Admittedly, I haven't played audiogames or otherwise used self-voicing programs in a long, long time. But, the only program I've encountered that can properly read out numbers/concatenate numbers is Math Flash from APH. The numbers come together perfectly. In audiogames when scores are reported, every number is spoken "on its own": one. Thousand. Three. Hundred. Points. Just an interesting observation.
I have a lot of experience recording samples that can be concatenated properly. There's definitely an art to it, and many don't have a clue how to do it right.

now I wonder how language packs work on Linux too. Is it that apt upgrade won't update some packages without the proper lang pack? I have a huntch that even if UpDown Tool's ISO included all 37 languages, they did not include all speech, handwriting, and input components. that would do it. If any are missing the LCU can fail like that.
@Tamas G On linux gettext is used very frequently. When packaging appsby the distro maintainers the packages contain all the #i18n and #l10n resources. On windows perfect example of doing the same is#nvdasr by@NVAccess@fosstodon.org
I may have found an easy way to make librsvg work better on Alpine/musl with its small stack size, that does not involve increasing the default per-thread stack size.
Do I know anyone who can test librsvg on that sort of environment?
@slomo librsvg passes a Result<O, E> around all the time; O is 128 bytes, and E is 32 bytes. If I use Result<Box<O>, Box<E>> instead, the whole Result is 16 bytes. Given that librsvg is recursive, this actually makes an impact. I'm now able to get it to reach its internally-imposed limit for recursion, even on a 128 Kb stack, instead of crashing with stack exhaustion.
maybe @q66 would be interested. But dunno if it's worth it, you can have the linker store an ELF header to request a bigger stack size and the dynamic linker will comply, for any binary that loads the library through DT_NEEDED. See wiki.musl-libc.org/functional-…
(though hm, i guess this is because librsvg pulls in cairo and cairo pulls in pixman which is compiled with increased stack size, so it gets that implicitly...)
but that also means i can't really test how rsvg changes things because the thread stack is always implicitly large
tbf i really don't see much point in musl's small stacks outside pedantry (but musl is pretty big on pedantry, so...) and several times considered bumping them to something more reasonable like 512k, considering thread stacks are virtual pages anyway and even in an overcommit-disabled system it really shouldn't matter unless you have *lots* of threads (and you probably shouldn't, because threads are expensive and and stuff that uses lots of tasks should probably opt for some kind of coroutine approach, or enforce their own pthread stack size value when creating them) and in a system with overcommit it will never matter at all
@q66 @aperezdc Yeah, I fully agree with this assessment. I don't know if glibc's stack is "too big" but I do know that it has been tested over many years on a lot of software. Regardless of musl's attitude about being different, changing the environment that programs assume, to a reduced one, will exhibit failure points, and I think that is to be expected. Fortunately this one is a clear resource limit, unlike the other mysterious problem we have with thread local storage which I have no idea.

Granted the weather went down to 44F last night so the house got to be around 68, which wouldn't have helped the chills in the first place. Uh, this is a bit confusing now. There are things like ChromeOS and ucLinux and then there is just Linux too. Why then not list all linux distributions? And how about things like OpenWRT? I'm fairly sure I can run curl on my router...
I think the Plan9 one will need some love. If I remember correctly it needed a hacked port of libressl and some compiler patches. I should look in to an alternative/more maintained ssl (preferably minimal) option for my Plan9 APExp project where I hope to include curl.
@staalmannen yeah, this list does not convey how much or how little work was required to make it happen - nor if any patches were ever actually brought back to us...
BTW would a 9P protocol be interesting within curl? It is used for communications with some VMs etc and the addresses can be expressed as urls (although in Plan9 typically as directories mounted under /n)
