So all I can do is experiment. I’m refining the settings for ɜ, ɚ, and ɝ. For ɜ, I’ll set cf1 to 530, cf2 to 1350, and cf3 at 2400. For ɚ, I'll use cf1=500, cf2=1350, and cf3 at 1700, with pf settings to match. For ɝ, I'll use cf3 at 1600, with similar pf settings. I'll keep 'r' for the tap/trill, and we'll see where it comes out when I get to it. Probably nowhere. But this is how a speech engine like this comes together. :D (LOL I asked GPT to convert the sounds into their IPA notations on this post)
Fun fact! There isn't a fixed number for IPA representations because the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a system with about 107 core symbols for sounds, plus numerous diacritics (around 31) and suprasegmental marks (around 17), allowing for countless combinations to represent sounds across all human languages, creating unique "strings" for each word or utterance, and what NV Speech Player needs to do is map these in languages to how they actually sound out by the voice in terms of frequencies. So yes, quite a task. That's why it may not come together for awhile and I'm focusing on responding to Jira tickets at work :D

Anyone know whether the Debian standard live CD (without any desktop environment), has a way to enable Speakup? I don't really need or want a desktop environment on my live CD, though I recognize that on modern hardware there isn't really a disadvantage to having one. There's also a Mate live CD so if all else fails I can just customize that.
@clv1 Thanks; I knew about s for speech in the installer CD but wasn't sure whether the live CD had that as well. I've never used it before and I know some live environments just toss you straight into a console/desktop. I'm going to test this shortly.
One trick I discovered to find what are the boot options of a given Linux image is, after burning the live image to the USB pen, open your file explorer and give a look at the .cfg files in the root of the pen. they belong to syslinux, which is the boot loader used in most distro live images.
@clv1 This is helpful; thanks. I'm very new to installing and using Debian directly on actual hardware. It was all VPS and Raspberry Pi for me until maybe six months ago.
@clv1 Waiting on the image to actually copy now, but looking at the cfg files, I notice there is an option to start the installer with speech but I don't see an option to start the live environment with speech. The live environment includes the installer and it's possible that if I just go to a blank TTY, that *will* be the live environment. We'll find out soon.
I recall asking last year on a mailing list about this. Someone said that the graphical installer inside the desktop isn't accessible with orca, or at least not friendly. The only option for now is a text mode installer with Speakup, but it's outside the desktop. In any case, it you want to start the desktop, Orca should work well, just press the classical key alt+win+s to start orca.
@clv1 Yeah, the installer speaks, but the installer isn't the live environment. Switching to a spare TTY will just give me Busybox. I was hoping I could start up the live environment and make it talk without having to use the huge Gnome/Mate editions. But it looks like Espeakup isn't even part of the default packages, so I'd either need to modify the environment, use it over SSH (which is extra fun on a laptop with no ethernet jack), or give up and use Mate. Oh well.
There seems to be a problem or something with FastSM where when I'm reading the notifications buffer, posts don't fully read. They stop at the middle of sentences and when I click the view function to view the post in full, its blank. This is an interesting bug.

Dazu kommt, dass für Blinde die Navigation mit Screenreader erheblich aufwendiger ist, als für uns Sehende.

Was having a problem with #openBSD -current where @thunderbird would cause the system to slow down before crashing the UI completely. I would have to SSH in from another box and reboot and this would take a while.
Seems that problem is now fixed. I’ve had Thunderbird running for two days with no issues.
Although - whenever I think I’m out of the woods….
Having said all this I still prefer #foss to being locked in with no privacy and having my data sold and being used to train LLM’s.

I used to have a Hazel automation which sorted all invoices which got dropped to my Downloads folder into a correct folder of its creation month. Hazel also deletes everything in my downloads folder older than 14 days, because I forgot to keep it tidy.
If I drop an audio file in to a certain folder, It gets locally transcribed and then summarised with a local LLm. Both transcript and the summary are available as separate text files. THis last one is particularly useful as I can access the system on my mac from anywhere via tailscale, essentially having a private AI summariser.
I updated my Tumbleweed this morning, rebooted, heard "screen reader on" but no further speech. Eventually switched to a console and blindly entered the right amixer command to unmute my audio, but I'm wondering how it became muted in the first place. It would be like a sighted person having a black screen.
My morning dose of supreme irony. Just came across a trailer for a video game called Blind Touch, which I thought sounded like one of the many accessible audio games out there, so I clicked. Nope, not that. Just a game where sighted people simulate being blind. Don’t know how that works because you have to see to play the game. But the trailer had no video description so I had to ask my sighted wife what was going on.
@FreakyFwoof There was a shooter game that came out a few years ago where the whole gimmick was you could not see your opponents. You could only find them with sound they made while shooting and walking around. Wait sorry I said sound? I meant sound waves, like actual waves that were drawn on screen because according to the developers doing this with actual spatial sound and echolocation alone would’ve been too hard.
