That's what you get after 30 years of using the term #OpenSource instead of #FreeSoftware.
@IzzyOnDroid @SylvieLorxu I would be happy to see your repo become #FreeSoftware! As you well know, F-Droid only endorses verifiable free software projects.
It is also great to see all your work on #ReproducibleBuilds. We are continuing to build upon our years of effort there. Our approach is focused on identifying issues and getting things fixed upstream as much as possible. Then devs do not need to use any special tools to achieve reproducible builds.
You can help make the #FreeSoftware #Android ecosystem be more reproducible! See the failures here and help us report them upstream: verification.f-droid.org/faile…
The 2022 tech layoffs were 70% women. BIPOC, queer, and disabled workers were also terminated at higher rates.
While we can't prevent corporate layoffs, we can ensure the future of the free and open source community is more diverse and inclusive. Outreachy and Conservancy are vital to that future.
@outreachy connects people who face discrimination and systemic bias to internships in free and open source software. @conservancy staff and contractors run Outreachy.
Outreachy corporate sponsorships and grants have been drastically reduced since 2022. This means Outreachy can't offer as many internships to people who face discrimination and systemic bias in tech. Outreachy's normal 60 to 70 intern cohorts have been reduced to 25 to 35 interns.
Please consider donating to the Conservancy fundraiser, in support of Outreachy and the diverse and inclusive future FOSS needs:

As I just joined social.coop, it may be a good time to re-introduce myself.
I studied architecture and organization development, and work now at tangente.coop supporting community-led and non-speculative #cooperative #cohousing projects in #Spain.
Also experienced in sustainable and people-centered urban develoment, and urban #cycling #mobility.
I love and support #FLOSS #freesoftware, digital autonomy and libre culture in general.
"why are we conflating email with IM?"
E.g. because both are used for communication between people.
"xmpp clients, to me anyway, don't meet my requirements of e2ee by default"
You are not enforced to use them. As #xmpp is an open standard and there are #freesoftware clients, you are free to make one that meets your standards.
@Gold gab ich für Eisen @maple @Daniel Gultsch
I know I'm not enforced to use them. I have decided not to use it as it does not meet my needs as I said. the xmpp clients are fractured, I have no interest in its ecosystem as I don't believe in it. I know, there are those who believe in it though.
if it can modernise itself, I may have another look. to me, it's legacy tech.
Had to explain to another user why asking a volunteer project to fix an issue is inappropriate.
And I get that's it's a really subtle point here between saying "I also have this problem" (fine) and "Please fix this issue" (not ok)
i.e. You can only ask people you have a relationship with to do work for you. You can NOT ask strangers to labour for you for free, even if you think it's important, or appropriate.

I started regularly donating about a year ago. I am now supporting 8 different projects with 20,77€ per month, and it didn't hurt at all.
Why pay for something free? Because free software only exists because other people already paid for it. Someone has to do it. It's time to do your part!
If you can afford a subscription service, then you probably can afford a little donation, too. Start with 0.1% of your income.

#XMPP is an egregious omission here. Mature IETF standard, federated, #FreeSoftware clients _and_ servers, end-to-end encryption...
You don't need a phone number or even an email ID to use XMPP, but you can also choose Quicksy for easier phone-number-based onboarding.

The thing that frustrates me about this is that the #FreeSoftware community wastes so much fucking time on #Stallman. So much time and effort is wasted on the eccentricities of one man, even though anyone with a gram of sense can see that this man is unfit to lead the social movement for our digital liberation.
And we are so utterly beholden to him. So much of our language and framing is Stallmanesque, sometimes undeservedly. My biggest pet hate is the narrative that 'you, the user, will be free if you use Free Software'. No you won't, especially not if you are not technically inclined. We are freed together as a community, not as individuals. The system of collaboration and the sharing of our digital infrastructure makes this thing liberating for all of us, not my ability to patch better Esperanto support into glibc.
And it's not like this movement needs a single leader, or that there aren't already extremely talented and dedicated leader figures in our community.
And it's not like there aren't problems with our community that aren't related to Stallman. There are so many people (men…) who make this community less lovely than it is.
But instead of lifting up other voices, or addressing other toxicity, we're stuck endlessly dealing with this one eccentric man.

Our report exhaustively catalogues, analyzes, and offers a rebuttal of Richard Stallman's political program of sexual violence, catalogues credible allegations of misconduct, and documents the misconduct of the #FSF circa 2019 and 2021. Please read and share our work.

Why isn’t software funded by taxpayers released as Free Software? 🤔💻
We need legislation 📜 requiring publicly financed software to be #FreeSoftware. If it’s public money 💰, it should be public code! 👨💻👩💻
Code paid by the people should be available to the people! 🙌 #PublicCode

Rust is nice, but I really dislike this "rewrite it in Rust" stuff. It's tiring for any #FreeSoftware maintainer to be bombarded by this and honestly, as an opinion, some of the projects I™ have seen doing this have lost contributors, some have even been stopped for months.
#Rust Community, please create your alternatives written in Rust since it is so urgent, instead of putting this unnecessary pressure on communities already overloaded with demands.
