Independent fromme fromme this or intially, a good start for institutions still hanging in MS365 or so can start with LibreOffice free file formats, so that there is an overall interoperability in data exchange.
Thats mainly replacements for Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

cool that you do #FreeSoftware and write about it.
To be fair: using K9 Mail or FairEmail from F-Droid via IMAPS with an email provider that provides IMAP and SMPTS will also give someone an email account that it well protected.
Today's AWS debacle is the perfect example of the reason why in the last few years I started to be less enthusiastic about Signal, and more oriented to federated or even P2P solutions like XMPP and Jami. I wrote about it already:
gagliardoni.net/#im_battle_202…
Signal was down for few hours today, after an outage that affected AWS:
mastodon.world/@Mer__edith/115…
Let's ignore for a second the blind reliance on AWS or any other cloud provider. In a decentralized system, this would not have happened, or at least it would have not impacted so many users.
Yes, I am a cryptographer myself, I know that Signal's encryption is the best. But encryption is not everything. Availability issues, geopolitical troubles, risk of enshittification, limitations on users' freedom to use and control the software lead to a lack of trust, even in a supersecure solution. And I say that with honest admiration for the folks at Signal, who are doing a great job.
May they prove me wrong over and over again.

I wonder if we should have #GPL 4 that would cover machine learning. Something like "if this code is used to train an LLM, then the code produced by the LLM must be released under the same license". I know there are many challenges, such as effective enforcement, but if this issue remains unaddressed, I believe LLMs may become a way to evade license virality.

👋 Hello! GNU Guix is on @hachyderm - yay!
If you haven't heard of #gnu #guix we're a free software project that's created a hosted package manager (think homebrew or flatpak) and a GNU/Linux distribution.
GNU Guix uses the functional packaging approach pioneered by #nix and adds a user-experience and system configuration system. It uses a DSL that's based on Guile Scheme. You can use it configure your home environment, dev environments or the entire system using a declarative and transactional definition.
We hope to tell people about the project and our latest news. We'd love to engage with people around #freesoftware #guile #scheme and more general #linux topics!

Help wanted, please!
If you have *first hand experience* of improving the diversity of a governance board of (currently all men) volunteers, I'd love to hear how you went about it, or resources which helped you, please.
What did you find helped make the role more attractive to a wider range of applicants to join?

I've had Fedora as my main operating system for 4 years and couldn't be happier!
I only use Windows at work out of necessity, but at home it's 100% free software. LibreOffice has completely replaced Microsoft's Office suite, and honestly, I don't miss it at all.
Who else here made this transition? What was your experience like?
CoMaps is now on IzzyOnDroid!
IzzyOnDroid is an Android store for Free & Open Source Software. The apps are free (as in „free beer“ and as in „free speech“) and Open Source.
Builds for IzzyOnDroid are directly from developers and signed by developers. This enables very fast publishing (whereas F-Droid re-builds apps from source).
There are several ways to install and update CoMaps via IzzyOnDroid:

😲🤬 re: what's happened to @Codeberg today.
The AI ballyhoo *is* a real DDoS against one of the few code hosting sites that takes a stand against slurping #FOSS code into LLM training sets — in violation of #copyleft.
Deregulation/lack-of-regulation will bring more of this. ∃ plenty of blame to go around, but #Microsoft & #GitHub deserve the bulk of it; they trailblazed the idea that FOSS code-hosting sites are lucrative targets.

LibreOffice's codebase is absolutely massive (~50M lines according to cloc?), and it very much got me beat the other day, when I "speedran" a scant 2 bugfixes in 7 hours.
So today, I'm going for a rematch! Let's see if better tools (rr, ctags) and better understanding of #LibreOffice code is going to be enough for me to get a bugfix in under 2 hours for #BugsDoneQuick! :joy:
