Why do I refer to the bike as a "lamplighter"? In the old days lamp lighting was a job. A lamp lighter went around in the evening usually with a ladder and lit up each gas powered lamp post in turn.
Some of the people doing this job had specialist bikes made that were very tall. Then they could just cycle between each one, hold on (or lean) and light them without needing the ladder.
The design here is classic lamplighter bike style, albeit scaled down. A real lamplighter would be over 7 foot.

I am curious to try it.. and optimistic: I didn't find it written anywhere, but I hope that the wait for a version where there is no continuous reindexing of all imap folders at every click is over, as well as for the calendar.
I am most of all thankful for all the performance improvements - the whole application no longer stalls when downloading messages! I've looked and looked at release notes and could not see when in 140 it happened, but it makes all the difference...
@Lafiel We do plan to eventually support it, but unfortunately we don't know when we'll add it to the roadmap. We definitely will update everyone when we do add it!
Thanks! I've been wanting to switch to using one email client instead of several for a long time. But the IMAP protocol is disturbing because if delete some messages from another place, then the main client will automatically delete the messages after synchronization. A mechanism similar to snapshots is needed.
@nicolaottomano Right now, the new Calendar UI is planned for the next ESR (June/July 26), and will first land in the monthly Release channel between now and then. oooh yeah, it's still a nice savings for sure. Have a 4 TB SSD in this desktop and haven't looked back since, probably lowest I'd do these days is like 1 TB if I had to go to a lower tear for a faster speed.

Perhaps it's just me, but I do find it amusing that the GNU Readline 8.3 announcement, in July 2025, gives two FTP URLs as the primary way to obtain the software. I don't remember when I last fired up an FTP client, and my web browser has long since forgotten how to do it too.

Following the example of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which is moving 30,000 PCs from Microsoft Office/365 to LibreOffice, the Danish Ministry of Digitalisation is doing the same.
It's more of a trial run than a commitment as far as I understand it. They are testing with the most technical people first and if that goes well, they will make a plan to get more switched.

There are many more people across the world doing consulting, support and custom development for open source apps. And Denmark – should it go ahead with a bigger LibreOffice rollout – could employ its own support staff too. So there's more than just the possibilities on that page.
I would like to switch, but I can't find help on two things I use a lot in Word.
Is it possible to simultaneously scroll two documents?
And is it possible to install multiple language packs to check grammar, typos, and more? I type in mostly two but sometimes three.
I create a lot of work in Word, and the layout of elements is crucial since the output goes to Acrobat for printing. Placed images should not be compressed. How does LibreOffice handle this?

One of the harder things to look out for in a software project is slow or gradual decay over a long period of time. Like if we gradually make a library 1% slower or use 2% more memory every other month.
in my own library(written in Go) I also spend an inordinate amount of time optimising memory use and allocations. I used to think that CPU time matters but really memory seems scarcer. Maybe because it’s much cheaper to overcommit CPU vs memory? Interesting to see that the same dynamic holds in a different ecosystem.

Hi. I'm not sure, but it seems like NVDA has an issue working with external USB audio interfaces like the Focusrite Scarlett. When I use the built-in Realtek sound card, everything runs smoothly with no freezes or slowdowns. But when I switch to an external interface that uses the ASIO protocol, I start having problems. Please test your product to make sure it works properly with audio devices using the ASIO protocol.

This is exciting and if you want to get an incredible introduction to type theory from first principles it's one of my more favorite texts on the subject. It does use C++ as it's reference language but you don't really need to know very much C++ in order to appreciate the text. IIRC it introduces what you need to know as it uses various features.
In the 80s and 90s, some desktop PCs included a "Turbo" button, but what it actually did was a little unclear. What was it for and why don't PCs have them now?
I remember that turbo button. the family had a lazer branded computer that the speed was 8mhz if the button was out, and 16mhz when the button was pushed in. it was funny to hear it count the ram when you turned it on when it was in turbo.
