I am still amazed that these super polished "simple" apps exist in the oss world. The likes of Fragments, Decibels and other apps with a completely different approach to the "mission control" UX, here's Ear Tag. A super simple music metadata editor that is a godsend for occasional music producers like myself. Thank you, @knuxify:postmarketos.org. It is a joy to use.
Now in the #FOSDEM live stream: Holger introducing #autocrypt2, a mechanism to protect against store-now-decrypt-later attacks, to be introduced in Delta!

@qyahxm yes, but I don't know the timeline of deployment. The goal is always backwards compatibility for a reasonable amount of time so there needs to be a release of a client that supports it in the wild for a while before they push a release with it enabled

I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.
People often avoid making small positive changes because they get caught up in trying to go all the way. For example, “I could never go vegan. I love bacon too much”.
So then go vegan plus bacon. Or vegetarian plus bacon. Or just switch to oat milk and eat more vegetables. Whatever small change you can make is good
Our booth is so well-crowed we cannot find it anymore 😬

"In late 2025, Alex started going massively viral on Bilibili, a Chinese video platform, for videos where he described poverty in America. He coined the term “kill line” (“斩杀线”) - an expression borrowed from gaming describing when a game character's health is so low one hit will finish them. In Alex’s framing, the concept describes how a single shock (illness, job loss, accident) can push middle-class Americans into irreversible poverty.
It’s hard to overstate the cultural impact he’s had in China. In barely a few weeks, “kill line” became part of everyday lexicon. So much so that even Qiushi - the core theoretical journal of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China - published a (...) analysis using "kill line" as its central framework (qstheory.cn/20260104/0a0919465…).
This never happens. Gaming slang coined by a 22-year-old streamer based in the U.S. does not become the analytical framework for Qiushi, the CPC’s core theoretical journal, in just a handful of weeks. That’s normally not how Communist Party theory gets crafted, to put it mildly 😂. And yet here we are - which goes to show just how powerfully Alex resonated.
It didn’t take long for America to notice - and for Alex’s problems to start.
Due to the staggering resonance his content was having in China, Alex became the target of an extremely vicious doxxing campaign by Chinese dissidents.
He also got targeted by Western media with the New York Times, among others, publishing a piece (nytimes.com/2026/01/13/busines…) identifying him as the origin of the phenomenon which they described - unsurprisingly - as Communist propaganda meant to “deflect criticism of [Chinese] leaders.”
I just wrote an article telling the full story. It ends with Alex escaping to China in an extraction worthy of a Cold War spy novel. Think about how extraordinary this is: a Chinese student fleeing to China for safety, because he feared for his life after being harassed for describing poverty in America."

If you have a tool that takes a build directory as the target for generating a bunch of files, make it automatically generate a gitignore file inside the same target directory. A simple:
echo "*" > ${builddir}/.gitignore
will do, and save a lot of time.

Imagine if people you met in life embodied the audio characteristics found in popular music recordings of the time they were born.
My mom, born in the mid 50s, would have a constant slap-back delay on her voice that couldn't be turned off.
Someone born a few years later would probably only be heard on either your left or right side, never both ears at once.
I would probably be in a wash of reverb and chorus.
Someone born in 1996 would have way too many highs and sound kind of brittle.
Someone born before 1925 would have a relatively limited frequency response, with the characteristics of acoustic recording.
It would be almost the inverse of going back in time and recording old voices with accents that don't exist anymore with modern, high-end equipment.

We have swag at #FOSDEM

Huh what? Arch was the first I searched for on fosdem.org/2026/stands/, but it's not mentioned?

As much as I loathe LLM "AI" built from hoards of stolen data, machine learning "AI" has become terrifically useful.
This past week I had 10 audio recorders set out in the forest and nearby grassland, all recording non-stop from Monday afternoon to Friday morning. That was on our recent university field ecology field trip.
Today I downloaded all the files to a hard drive (156 GB of data) and then I set my little M1 Macbook Air to work, using the offline desktop BirdNet app to identify all of the birds in the recordings.
It took most of the day, and now I have a 42,284 row spreadsheet of birds detected.
It really feels like magic.
Here's a quick sorted lists of all the bird detections with species IDs with a confidence score >0.9.
Together with the students in the course, we'll laterl compare how birds have changed since we started doing this in 2020, and how the birds in the grassland differ from the forest.)

LLMs (combined with ASR models) are basically this but for text.
LLMs let you turn large and messy corpora of text, audio and images into a neat csv, which you can then analyze in any data science tool of choice. You can't just Excel your way through "how likely are right-wing newspapers to mention the race of a rapist, depending on what that race is." Not without a team of grad students doing the gruntwork at least. LLMs automate away all of that gruntwork, letting you answer research questions much faster.
You can't use pure Chat GPT for this, you need specialized tools.
Sure, LLMs hallucinate, just like human annotators do. This is why you (as a human) need to go through a sample of your corpus and figure out what your hallucination rate is. This is still much faster than annotating the entire corpus.
At some point last evening, most of the lights off, I was coming up the stairs, and was meowing at the cat. The cat meowed back, and we were having "a conversation", as you do.
I became aware that the cat was in front of me, but the meowing was coming from further up the stairs.
That's when I realized the cat wasn't saying anything, but my wife and I were meowing at each other, each of us thinking the other was the cat.
Meanwhile, the cat was sitting between us, wondering what these two idiots were talking about.
