Right, so I got the Pixel 6 Pro and like 5 additional cases for 50 bucks, battery has been replaced with an original, the screen has a few dead pixels, but the guy even gave me the old screen and battery. Now I have a device to test Graphene OS on, yippi.
Re: last boost (dragonscave.space/@TheQuinbox/…) about Fedra, @TheQuinbox's new Mastodon client, what makes this project notable to me is that it's written in Rust and uses wxDragon, a project to provide Rust bindings for wxWidgets. The result is a desktop application with top-tier accessibility for screen reader users, in a self-contained executable that's quite small by modern standards (~10 MB for Fedra). I hope this project will become a reference for future applications by and for blind people.
Note: Fedra is currently Windows-only. There are some complications in using wx to create non-trivial accessible interfaces across the three major desktop platforms. I'm sure Quin will work those out over time.
This is also a resounding success story for Cargo, Rust's build system. I just pulled Quin's repo, updated my Rust stable toolchain, then ran "cargo build --release". That was it. Out popped a stand-alone executable. On Windows! "Fused silicon", to use @glyph's old metaphor (blog.glyph.im/2006/04/fused-si…), has never been easier. Granted, this is my dev box, so I already had a recent Visual Studio installed, but I don't recall having to do much if any futzing with it.
I do realize, that as @glyph pointed out much more recently, a stand-alone executable isn't the whole story, especially on non-Windows platforms. blog.glyph.im/2023/03/no-exe-i… We need packaging, digital signing, notarization on macOS, etc. But there's work happening on that stuff in the Rust ecosystem as well. @glyph Much better than how Paperback used to work, make sure you clone with the submodules, then init vcpkg, then make sure you're in a dev cmd prompt, and then run these three commands. Cargo is one of the things that keeps me coming back to Rust, despite me finding other languages that have draw in their own ways.

I just saw a short on Youtube about how many musicians find it hard to tell the difference between an augmented and a diminished chord. To me, it's pretty obvious, not because I have a firm grasp of music theory. I really don't. It's always been sub-par. I just play things that sound good to me. The reason it's obvious to me is because of the Casio SK-1 I had as a kid. It had dedicated keys for different types of chords, and someone once told me what they all were, probably when I was about four years old. Stuff like that sticks around forever.

I'm in Belgium for #FOSDEM and the #XMPP Summit, and ever since I crossed the border on Wednesday, my roaming has been extremely spotty or non-existent. It's amazing how much XMPP instant messaging traffic I can still get through a very slow EDGE connection, whereas the Mastodon API with Tusky doesn't work at all.
Try disabling or enabling 5G. I got similar issues when traveling to Czech or to Hungary. Also manual selection of different local provider may also help…

Today we are gonna be talking about hyperbolic orbits
A hyperbolic orbit describes the path of an object that passes through a gravitational system only once and never returns. Unlike circular or elliptical orbits, a hyperbolic trajectory is open, meaning the object has enough speed to escape the gravity of the body it encounters. In our solar system, some comets and interstellar objects follow hyperbolic orbits, briefly swinging past the Sun before heading back into deep space. These paths have an eccentricity greater than one, a key mathematical signature of escape. Hyperbolic orbits are important because they reveal objects that originated elsewhere. A few examples include Oumuamua and 31/ATLAS.

I didn’t get a chance to ask the question during the panel, so I’ll ask it out-loud here :)
I tend to have a mental model of behaviour that I think about on social media: interaction level and collective level.
If you want to moderate interaction level content, then that’s things like “is this image problematic” or “is this person harassing someone else” and so on. That seems to be what the DSA mostly addresses? Which is great! We need more protection there
But the collective level is something I’m curious about: what happens when attacks are designed to be “harmless” or “not violating” at the interaction-level, yet deeply harmful at the collective level? How does one defend against a synthetic threat carefully designed to target a vulnerable collective in a way that no interaction level defense is really capable of handeling?
Do we have regulations around this yet? Is it a problem we’re trying to address at the governance level? (I know the tooling is nearly non existent, but slowly starting to emerge. It would be encouraging to see similar momentum in governance)

@modulux A good example would be identifying a wave of spam from multiple individual accounts, each one being a “normal” amount of traffic, but the aggregate being a disproportionate amount of volume.
Another would be a group that targets a subset of a community with messages that, individually, do not break any rules but the combined result is that the targeted community members feel so unwelcome that they can’t participate safely in the space without harming their mental health.
When done severely enough and targeted enough, it can erode a community over time to the point where it collapses
