Want to read a stupid PDF, but hate Adobe Reader? Then let Word help you. 1. Save your PDF in an easy to remember location. I put it under C:\files. 2. Press Windows+R then type Winword, the file name and press Enter. For example: winword c:\files\IHatePDFDocuments.pdf Word will OCR the file and then present it in a Word document.
in reply to Martin from Toronto

You can also graphically do it, buy right click, open with, select word, left click okay. Or, context menu, open with, word, enter.

Kagi Translate is not revolutionary - it's simply a better translation service.

Try it for yourself, and access 244 languages with zero tracking: translate.kagi.com/

Also: we will be bringing Kagi Translate soon inside Kagi Search as a widget for instant translation inside search results! 🪄

I am originally skeptical of @kagihq ‘s new Translate when I read the changelog since it’s using LLM, but damn I was wrong.

I used a piece of Chinese news to test the translation, and Kagi is the only one that translate 副總統勝選人 to “Vice President-elect”. Google Translate translated it to “Vice President Candidate” (副總統候選人) while DeepL only translate it to Vice President (副總統)

There's an icon on my desktop I don't remember seeing before, called "learn about this picture." I can't seem to delete it. The normal hotkeys don't work, and there's no delete option in the context menu. I know it's not a big deal, it just feels like clutter. How can I get rid of it?
in reply to Justin Ekis

To turn that off, go into settings>personalization>background, and set the personalize your background option to something other than Windows Spotlight.
in reply to Justin Ekis

It appears when you have your wallpaper set to the random photos option. If you set it to a static image it will go away.

Planning to set up my own fedi instance soon, what's the current status of GoToSocial in terms of usability, featureset, compatibility, and so on?
in reply to Sven Slootweg

featurewise: interaction controls and sandboxed media preview generation just landed, the main big missing feature at this point is message edits, which is coming in the next release

the main usability downside is that normal clients (enafore, phanpy, etc) all do regular timeline stuff but you still need a separate GTS-specific web UI to do some operations including editing your profile

compatibility is top-notch; haven't run into an issue yet

in reply to technomancy (turbonerd aspect)

Ah yeah, post editting is a big one too. I didn't think of that one because Semaphore does not support it.

🎉 Die heutige #FediverseSprechstunde ist zu Ende.

OK, Apple twisted my arm enough so I upgraded to iOS 18.1.1. It's great so far, but I'm having trouble figuring out the new Braille Screen Input activation gesture. Can someone please explain where your fingers are supposed to be? Do you have to hold the phone in Portrait or Landscape mode for it to work, or does it matter?
in reply to Andy

@remixman Landscape is what I prefer to use as well. I never got the hang of Screen Away Mode.
@Andy
in reply to Kelly Sapergia

It works more like a Perkins Braillewriter, which is what I've been using since I was young. I don't understand screen-away.

Gosh. Now even AI can search through your browsing history in Google Workspace when using Chrome? What is this world coming to. I declined it, of course. It was like, "search smarter with the power of AI." Just to be able to give it text queries for what I'm looking for in natural language, no doubt, what else.
The problem is that I don't want to submit every single part of my life to AI engines for analysis. Maybe it's on-device, cloud, whatever it is, if it has more sensitive data like a timeline of all sites I visited, no thanks. Some other things, like Meta glasses, I'm OK with pictures used for AI training if it means we get more representation for the way those with disabilities use that device, because I know I won't be using for sensitive data like credit card numbers, just stuff I see in public, labels I read, ETC.
In the end, this AI will be (already is) the excuse companies use to feed data from your most sensitive parts of your life into their models too, unless you yourself take control and understand the implications of the data they're asking you to feed their AI.

This article discusses how to protect privacy, amidst concerns of increased government surveillance.

The article is aimed at Asylum seekers & immigrants to the US, but it's solid advice for anyone, really.

Recommendations include using encrypted messaging apps like Signal, Apple iMessage, and WhatsApp, and setting messages to disappear.

It also recommends minimizing data sharing and deleting data when possible, particularly from Google.

@chris Chris, I just finished listening to the latest Mystic Access podcast. I had a comment regarding your segment on the importance of backup services, with OneDrive being one of the services that you mentioned. I certainly agree with your views and recommendations on this topic but there's one thing that needs to be said about OneDrive and probably Dropbox. I use OneDrive continually and I love the service. However, it's not a true backup service in the way that people might expect. Rather, it's more of a synchronization service. Sure, if you have 100 files in your Documents folder, OneDrive can ensure that those files are uploaded and available on any device that has OneDrive installed. However, if you delete 10 of those files, they will then automatically get deleted from OneDrive and on all devices where OneDrive is installed. This could really startle some users who expected that all of their files would be permanently safe and sound. Sure, they could access the Recycle Bin and likely get those files back, but it still could be a surprise for some users. Again, this makes it more of a synchronization service, rather than a permanent backup service.
That being said, I do still use OneDrive but I also regularly back up files to two external drives which are not synchronized with a cloud service. That way, if I unintentionally delete something that I later decide is important to me, I still have it available on my external backups. As long as users understand this, services like OneDrive are fine to use and are extremely convenient.
Thanks for such an excellent podcast and for everything that you and Kim do for the community.
in reply to David Goldfield

What nice feature of OneDrive in modern cloud solutions though is version control. So keeping track iteratively of all the different changes you made to a document across. May be a period of six months so that in itself can be worth its weight and gold. But for back up purposes like you mentioned. And making sure that I don’t lose certain files. I make sure once a month they take very important folders I have a script that runs move them all over into a time stamped folder that’s a zip file and I also have it so that it copies it over to another cloud drive like Google Drive just as a back up.
in reply to David Goldfield

I agree with you 100% we also use OpenDrive to back up as well as network attached storage. Can't be too careful. Years ago I had a NAS that smoked. Lost all that data as it was the only place I had those files.

So looks like Matt Gaetz withdrew from the AG nomination. Guess a better phrase would be he pulled out.

So why does #hCAPTCHA still insist on forcing blind people to retrieve their so-called “accessibility cookies”. Not only does that compel us to go through many more additional steps than a sighted person would have to do to verify their humanity (irony!) but I gather this dreadful workaround is not really even secure! Have they not heard of a simple thing called “audio challenges”…? Is this really “accessibility”…? (#Discord, #DoBetter!)
This entry was edited (3 days ago)
in reply to Misty-don 👩🏼‍🦯

I believe that HCaptcha has an option for audio challenges but it doesn't seem to be available or enabled on every site that uses it. Even with that, audio challenges still lock out deaf-blind people.
Sometimes, when I try to sign into PayPal using Brave, I get an HCaptcha challenge with no audio challenge. It's very tricky getting those "accessibility cookies" to play nicely with Brave and it's a step I shouldn't need to go through, anyway. What usually happens is that I give up and my second authentication attempt, for whatever reason, results in bypassing HCaptcha. Blindness organizations like the NFB or @ACBNational need to engage in advocacy with HCaptcha with the goal of getting them to be more inclusive and less discriminatory. If that fails, there needs to be a law suit filed against them.
