Oh yeah, they do, but their goal isn't making features people don't hate. Their goal is making profitable features which people hate, but not to the extend they would leave the service. And because they have data, they have learned that the threshold is really high for most people. So we have a market with a handful of dominant services which are hated by their users, but it isn't going to change until people stop complaining about it and actually start leaving them.
I take your point. People apparently don't hate this enough to leave right now. But the thing about losing goodwill is that things happen gradually, and then suddenly. I think that a good business leader should be sensitive to this. The fact that the data doesn't show enough outflow to worry about _today_ doesn't mean you're not going to see something much worse in the future.

Dear Fediverse, I recently acquired a second-hand #guitar that I had "love at first sight" for as soon as I saw it online. It really is lovely to play, but I know very little about it, though, except that it's from a now defunct brand called #Dreambow. I can't find any other name or serial. Just a quick note to explain why I'm transliterating Hebrew instead of just typing it: Eloquence, which is a speech synthesizer used by a lot of blind people who use screen readers, really freaks out with Hebrew, to the point where it just announces characters. I want to open an app without wondering 'who else is watching?', search without feeding endless ad profiles, use a device that works FOR me, not ON me. Most important is trust. Trust in the software you run; trust in the hardware; trust in the manufacturer. To me, @volla betrayed that trust when they promised in their Kickstarter to open-source their OS and apps and then quietly decided not to. If I win the phone, I'll probably gift it away. Because once trust is lost, it's hard to regain it.
I don't want to be a product - for googled phones there's no option. so I love my Fairphone with e.OS indtalled - I can use phone as I want to, not like companies want me to.

Definitely freedom to mess around without restrictions that Google impose just ‘cause they can. Not being tracked whilst doing that for no purpose other than money is an equal first place for me.
The most important thing about a #deGoogle phone is that the system and applications work without constant logging into Google/Apple and without built-in telemetry, and that permissions (especially network, location, microphone, camera) are only granted when they are really needed.
This year I finally made the switch to #Linux on my laptop. Your message reminded me that the journey isn't over just yet. Only a #degoogled phone will bring me there.
For me the most important thing is: Verified Boot with bootloader re-locking. Without it, there's no verifiable chain of trust from hardware to operating system.
Apart from the obvious, avoiding monopoly, people privacy and keeping the internet an open place, I think what's the most important on a de-googled phone is to be able to maintain the level of security we deserve. We shouldn't have to give-up hardware security and regular security update to avoid google services. Google made sure we were dependent enough to make it hard. So big thanks for every alternative company for providing alternative safe solutions !

trust is the most important. Having my most important information means I must trust the device the in charge of it. Since I cannot make the manufacturers accountable for potential misuse of the information then I should be in control of how my information is used.
My main reason to have a de-googled phone is the control to choose what I have on my phone and what I don't. I spend a reasonable amount of my day on my phone, and I should decide what competes for my attention and what doesn't.
It's an easy answer for me. It needs a bootloader that can be opened, to facilitate the installation of alternative operating systems like Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch.
Privacy. Truly owning my data without corporations snooping on me. Finally, decentralisation of the Internet - we’ve already given too much control to select few entities.
Control and knowledge about what apps are doing, for me. I would like to have an extensive list of customizable permissions (which actually work!), and some kind of way to know which apps are phoning home with which data, and the ability to filter out traffic if it's unwanted. Essentially control for those who know what they want from a phone ig (not that I'm an expert) 😁

just pushed a pretty significant update, swapped out the old gemma3 27b model for qwen3-vl:30b-a3b-thinking and holy shit the difference is noticeable
the cool thing about this model is it's very dynamic, simple images get quick, concise descriptions without overexplaining everything. and with complex images, it takes its time and actually thinks through what it's looking at. you get better alt-text without wasting compute on stuff that doesn't need it.
basically: smarter where it counts, efficient where it doesn't.
oh and here's the part that made me double-check my math: electricity usage dropped by MORE THAN 10x. complex images that used to cost ~0.950 Wh now only use ~0.092 Wh. this is thanks to MoE (mixture of experts) architecture, despite being a 30b parameter model, it only activates 3b worth of parameters at a time. so you get way better results while using a fraction of the power.
been testing this for a bit now and honestly really happy with the results. descriptions are more accurate, less hallucination-y, and the model describes way better than before.
as always, altbot is fully open source and processes everything locally, no data gets sent to third parties. your images stay private.
I have recently gained a new feature: Vertigo. I don't remember installing that, and I certainly don't recommend it. It's new to me as of about a week ago.
Been there, sometimes had to deal with that. If I’m even just the tiniest bit dehydrated, standing is not an option… Do you wanna talk about crumbling, having to pull up on a counter in order to throw myself on the toilet to use the bathroom kind of sucks. For some strange reason, Gatorade, and cheese crackers is the cure. I don’t know why, but it’s proven itself as great multiple times.

Fair, sometimes I get a warning. The annoying thing is that the warning happens to be my body feeling very heavy and every part of it annoying to move. What I want to do at that point is to go to bed and stay there. What I need to do in order to keep things from getting really bad is the opposite.

I think the only reason I don’t have that problem is because I try to go for the 1410 rule. That’s essentially where you have five hours between when you get up and then eat, and 5 between eating and then going to bed. Plus, trying to make sure I have enough water. I learned about this from a student. I had several years ago, who was celebrating the fact that he was down to 270. This is very significant progress considering that he started at 350.
He also made a point to go outside every day, even if it just a minute or so, he said that helped as well. Its amazing what I've learned over the years about people and life by teaching

it's very hard to assess what is slop. I suspect a large amount of people get tricked by AIs but submit the report "in a human way" so that the AI's involvement is invisible. But that's just one theory.

If you get yelled at for calling the wrong number, you've just struck gold, because if they're allowed to yell at you, they have access to the internal corporate phone directory and can get you the person you actually want.
People underestimate the power of calling random numbers unrelated to their case (investor relations, press inquiries, legal and so on), and saying "sorry, Chat GPT told me to call this number when the main customer support hotline couldn't help me, can you give me the number for office x instead?"
Those people are usually a lot more empowered to actually help you than some outsourced third-world-country customer support contractor with no access to internal company systems beyond what's required to complete 90% of the most common inquiries.
I've moved pretty much all my daily driver stuff (except web browsing) from Windows to Mac, in preparation for my up-coming trip. I don't want to drag two laptops with me, so I'm using as much as I can on Mac OS, and have a Windows 11 virtual machine for the rest of it.
I stepped away from using Mac OS for a few years, and am now once again at the point where using it doesn't feel completely odd. So, that's exciting, I suppose.
I don't really talk to many Mac users. I know @FreakyFwoof uses it for music but am not sure whether that's all. I know someone else who basically abandoned the OS after more than a decade. Are there any fun hacks or just useful things you do to get it to play nice? Is terminal still as intolerable as ever? I feel like native apps are at least a little more common there, there's a lot of nice audio stuff, and I should enjoy it. But I feel like some quirk or bug always pushes me away from it and I end up back on Windows. My MacBook Air has spent entire months turned off.
@simon @FreakyFwoof I still hate Terminal with Voiceover. So, TDSR exists, and I use that instead. You can make Terminal behave a little better by changing the type of terminal being emulated and some other things, but TDSR still wins.

Když nejede displej a data, tak na 6a dva dny dám. Data mi přijdou jako největší žrout, subjektivně víc než to bylo na CalyxOS s MicroG. U tebe zda se, to jsou taky data. Když nad tím přemýšlím, mohlo by to souviset - bez Google Play fungují notifikace u některých aplikací jinak, u tebe to bude třeba Signal, tedy pokud nepoužíváš Unified Push. FairEmail bude záviset na mailserveru a podpoře push notifikací, tam to systém myslím neovlivní.

@archos na vlastníkovi žádné Google aplikace nemám (zatím tedy ani Google play). Kalendář, kontakty (synchronizace přes DAVx5), e-maily (Gmail přijímaný přes FairMail) atd. používám buď ty předinstalované, nebo fossify. Asi si nezvyknu na to přepínání profilů, tak přemýšlím, že nechám jen 2 (vlastník a banky) a smířím se s tím sandboxovým Googlem. Musím udělat inventuru toho, co mi chodí na Gmail, nechat ho jako zombie a začít využívat jako hlavní můj protonmail..nebo vymyslet něco jiného.
Já s profily taky bojuju, vždy to vyzkouším a pak je vymažu. Prostě to není komfort. Já vydržím tři týdny a pak si řeknu, že to sraní mi za to nestojí 😀😀 Hlavně Google play je v Sandboxu, to ze Google ví co mám za aplikace je myslím úplně jedno. A while ago, I made a deal with myself. If my music streaming service found me a song I really enjoyed--I played it a lot, felt happy when it came on--I'd buy the song. If the album were cheap enough and I like two or three songs on it, I'd buy the whole album. In the last couple days, I've spent around $35 on music from two artists I only just discovered, and I don't regret it at all. The artists got a little bit of actual money, and I own the music as unencrypted files not tied to streaming.
I have a few projects for this holiday break, most of my time will be spent hanging out with my wife, friends, playing Pokemon, and sleeping a lot, but around that I'll also record a lot of music and try to convert Akira to Gtk4
