Every year I do an activity on the fugitive slave law & civil disobedience. We talk about whether protest is worthwhile and when, if ever, it's ok to break the law to stand for moral principles.

In past years, most students were pretty cynical & said protest wasn't helpful; they wouldn't risk their own safety and security for civil disobedience. Today, numerous students said that the risk to the country of not protesting for what is right was greater than the personal risk of getting arrested.

What has changed, beyond the random mix of students? My best guess is that the frequency of protests, esp by young people, has an influence, as does the very real sense in their generation that there are serious and urgent problems in the world. That said, when I asked how many of them had ever engaged in protest or civil disobedience, only 3/23 had.

In 1930, the 22-million-pound Indiana Bell building was rotated 90 degrees over a month at a rate of 15 inches per hour, while 600 employees worked inside. Despite the slow movement, there was no interruption to the building's services, and none of the employees felt it move. #ConstructionHistory #StructuralEngineering

#ChatControl #OnlineSafetyBill #EarnIt - Lots of politicians want to undermine encryption once again. When will they ever learn that a "backdoor for the good guys only" is simply not possible?

Politiker wollen wieder einmal die Verschlüsselung untergraben. Wann werden sie jemals lernen, dass eine "Hintertür nur für die Guten" einfach nicht möglich ist?

Over the Easter holidays I experimented a bit with building Rust code with meson instead of cargo.

Specifically I tried building a GStreamer plugin with a few dozen Rust dependencies, but the same applies in a similar way to GTK/GNOME applications or literally anything else.

A write-up of the results with a lot of details can be found here: coaxion.net/blog/2023/04/build…

OK, friends. I could use your boosting powers on this one AND I could use your eyes for 5–10 min if you'd like to be helpful.

I've done the launch on the updated, multi-lingual & multi-device version of my font-spacing research test site. Please have a visit to letter.fit and take a look at a sample or two.

You don't have to be in #fonts #type or #typography — this is just "look at this sample, highlight things that stick out"; the value is in wide samples & lots of variety!

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD) is one month from today. Here's my 2022 GAAD article, still relevant today... and throughout eternity, across the galaxy: lflegal.com/2022/05/hitchhiker… #a11y

A few years ago, I made friends with one of the best waiters I've ever had in a restaurant in my life. I'm not sure if it's weird for me to say this, but this man is an angel on earth. I recently got wind that his wife has cancer, and they're trying to raze money to help keep their home, as well as pay for their children's activities while she recovers. I would be very grateful if you can donate, and I'm sure they would be too. gofundme.com/f/rzcz8u-cancer-f… @mutualaid #mutualaid #MutualAidRequest

Having recently joined us from Berlin as a full-time #Android developer, @wmontwe brings his passion for building mobile applications to the Thunderbird team. He’ll be helping to develop new features and an updated interface for K-9 Mail as we transform it into #Thunderbird for Android.

We talked about his first PC (and hacking on games to get them to run), what he hopes to accomplish for the Thunderbird mobile app, and how our community of contributors can help.

The mockup definitely informs the final Supernova design. And that "final" design may not materialize immediately upon release, but happen in stages throughout the Supernova cycle.

I think the biggest element still missing is multi-line message previews, and that's coming! We also have a lot of polish and prep to accomplish before 115 lands in July.

Apparently, on this day in 1877, the phonograph was unvailed.
To celebrate, I bring you this terrible and obnoxious thing I did in the summer of 2007 after a combination of a few drinks and not nearly enough sleep. It's the fake playback of a late 19th century digital phonograph... or something.

Sounds like Reddit wants to follow in Twitter's footsteps and make API access payed, though it sounds like they're specifically targeting companies scraping the site to train AI language models, while access for academics and making bots or apps that help using the site would still get free access. We'll have to see how all of this turns out in practice techcrunch.com/2023/04/18/redd…

Reddit followup: The Developer of Apollo (by far the most popular 3rd party iOS client) had a meeting with them about the API changes. Full details are in the post below but the TLDR, sounds like Reddit doesn’t want to get rid of third party clients, but they want to charge for the API usage by them - IE to offset the cost of ads people wouldn’t be seeing. So in the case of Apollo it couldn’t have a version anymore. What this means for apps like Dystopia or Nthantech’s client remains to be seen. reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comment…
