👁‍🗨Screen Readers support for text level HTML semantics

Nice analysis Steve! I noted under the "Screen Readers and text formatting" section, you had a note that "The most configurable is JAWS via speech and sound schemes". Is there anything particular you'd like to see added in NVDA in terms of configurability here? It would definitely be worth an issue on our tracker at github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue… if you can put forward a specific recommendation (or if you give me enough detail, I can write it up)

You might have noticed some people publish much longer posts than the usual 500 character limit. There are three ways this is possible:

-The server owner has customised their Mastodon server's software to change the character limit

-The server owner has installed a pre-customised version of Mastodon such as Glitch or Hometown

-The server isn't running on Mastodon software at all, but something totally different such as Friendica, WordPress etc

As a front-end developer, there are some things that jumped out to me in the recent screen-reader survey. I'll share a couple of them, but keep in mind that I don't typically use a screen reader myself. You can take a look at the results yourself at:

{ Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early stages of monetizing our user base,” and proceeds to say that it will continue to sell users’ content to companies that want to train LLMs and that it will also begin “increased use of artificial intelligence in our advertising solutions.” }

I bet @bagder loves this little gem of #AI auto-created PR! Just 3158 changed files, all have to be reviewed manually now.

Did you ever believe that Hunter Biden took a #laptop full of incriminating information into a computer repair shop and abandoned it there? That the repair shop decided to examine its contents and transmit them to Rudy Giuliani and Steve Bannon?

Of course not. Because you have more common sense than reporters and editors at every major news organization.

The whole thing was a Russian disinformation op, in partnership with the GOP. And it's ongoing. Where's the press?

I know right.

Also, I find “illustration” suggests a person being creative and illustrating something. Not some Schmuck sitting behind their keyboard trying to get a prompt right.
For a company or institution ostensibly fighting for the rights of the little guy, it seems out of tune to use a technology that makes billions for unethical corporations whose product takes a giant dump on creatives and was developed by exploitation and theft of their work.

I (Monica here) asked our community member to use this image from one of his many helpful Thunderbird updates in German. I provided the info about the image to provide honest attribution. I've taken him off the replies. He isn't a schmuck, and he shouldn't bear the brunt of criticism for saying yes to my request.

There's a valid discussion to be had about prioritizing humans over AI tools, but the onus is on me for using the image - not our community member for saying yes.

Yep, cool feature! Try it out when you get it! #accessibility #andorid #ios #google androiddev.social/@MishaalRahm…

4) Last October, Google launched Lens in Maps (formerly Search with Live View). This feature uses AI and augmented reality to help you find information about nearby stores. Now, this feature has been upgraded with screen reader support, so you can point your phone’s camera at your surroundings and have TalkBack read the place’s information out loud.

Google’s latest Android Feature Drop for February 2024 is here, bringing you 9 new features to help you stay productive. These include:

1) You can now chat with Gemini right in the Google Messages app on Android! You can ask Gemini to do things like draft messages, come up with a joke, and more. This is available for beta users in English.

2) Android Auto can now use AI to summarize notifications. AI will also suggest relevant replies and actions, so you can just tap a button to send a message, share your ETA, or start a call. (This was announced at Galaxy Unpacked last month but should be rolling out now.)

3) Lookout’s Image Q&A feature is now rolling out globally in English! This feature left closed beta last September & was available in the US, UK, and Canada. Image Q&A uses AI to auto-generate descriptions of images.

You know the "horseshoe theory," right? "The far-left and the far-right, rather than being at opposite and opposing ends of a linear continuum of the political spectrum, closely resemble each other, analogous to the way that the opposite ends of a horseshoe are close together":

One of the things I enjoyed improving on Synapse was the URL preview capability. I was curious how much it improved over the past several years so did some experiments:

Aber fast genau vor drei Jahren hat @republik_magazin den super Artikel "Kill the messenger" publiziert, der mich erst zu @matrix und ins Fediverse gebracht hat und durch den ich viele spannende Leute und Projekte kennen lernen durfte. Ich hoffe auf drei weitere spannende Jahre mit ebenso vielen Learnings. 🙂

In the past few weeks, I spent a bit of time on a set of #OpenPGP hobby projects around #rpgp (github.com/rpgp/rpgp/). Today I'm happy to announce:

rsop v0.1.0 (crates.io/crates/rsop), an early stage "stateless OpenPGP" tool based on rpgp.

Relatedly, I also released rpgpie 🦀️🔐🥧 v0.0.1 (crates.io/crates/rpgpie), an experimental high level OpenPGP API based on rpgp (rsop is built on top of rpgpie).

News from the machine room: the pure #rust end-to-end encryption engine, "rpgp", saw quite some work and a new release in recent weeks and now @hko released a higher level "rpgpie" interface for application developers ( see fosstodon.org/@hko/11199799800… ) which also powers running the IETF #OpenPGP #interoperability test suite quite successfully .... Delta Chat's security-audited encryption engine is in fact used from several other projects and in other contexts these days and we are happy about it!

As I mentioned before, I'll be speaking at the Open Source Summit North America in Seattle about my GNOME accessibility work on April 17. events.linuxfoundation.org/ope… I'll arrive in Seattle late in the afternoon on April 15, and will leave early on Sunday, April 21. I'd be happy to meet up with others in the Seattle metro area during that time.
