Stala se mi v práci taková nemilá věc. Včera mi zničehonic přestalo fungovat spojení počítače s dokovací stanici.
Notebook Lenovo Thinkpad, dokovací stanice DELL. Dosud vše fungovalo 4 měsíce dobře.
Vyzkoušena i jiná dokovací stanice.
Nejdřív přestal zobrazovat jeden monitor, po odpojení a připojení už oba externí. Nefunguje ani LAN.

Seems like #Cheogram went the route of just pretending they upload the contact list to satisfy Google Play requirements.¹

I get why they are doing this. I've contemplated doing this myself but I’m absolutely not convinced that pretending your app is worse than it is is the right strategy here. Especially because the overwhelming majority of our users are not following us on social media and thus don’t have the context for why we would do this.

Protinádorová vakcína pro psy téměř zdvojnásobuje dobu jejich přežití

Nejen lidi, ale i psy ohrožují nádory. Možnosti léčby psích pacientů ale zdaleka nejsou tak široké jako u těch lidských. Nová protinádorová vakcína by mohla situaci zlepšit.

So, I don't think biomedical researchers realize how much is at stake with the upcoming election. Take a look at some snippets from Project2025, the blueprint for the next Trump Administration and then be afraid. Then get organized. The plan is to end biomedical research as we know it. Ignoring it and putting our heads in the sand is not an option.

WebTunnel

Tor has a new pluggable transport called WebTunnel.

Pluggable Transports

Okay, let's talk about bridges and PTs first.

Your ISP can (try to) prevent you from connecting to Tor by blocking connections to publicly listed Tor nodes and/or by profiling Tor traffic (through DPI) and blocking it. You can get around this using bridges (unlisted Tor entry nodes) and pluggable transports (PTs) which disguise your traffic through one of two techniques:

  1. making it look like another protocol
  2. making it look like nothing in particular

The idea with 1 is to make your traffic look like something your ISP allows (like HTTPS). The idea with 2 is to make it hard to identify and block the traffic.

The main PT used in Tor today is obfs4 lyrebird, which is in category 2. This is useful if your ISP generally allows most traffic and only blocks things they can identify as problems (i.e., denylist model).

The others are in category 1: meek, which uses HTTPS for domain fronting (something I discussed in my previous blog post); Snowflake, which uses WebRTC (and a little bit of domain fronting); and now a new PT: WebTunnel, which also uses HTTPS but in a different way than meek. These are useful if your ISP only allows certain protocols and blocks everything else (i.e., allowlist model).

Probing Resistance

An important capability for pluggable transports is that they are resistant to probing.

Let me explain.

Suppose you connect to some service your ISP doesn't know about. They wonder what that service is and whether they should allow you to access it in the future. They try to answer this question by connecting to it and seeing what happens. (This is called “active probing” and is a technique known to be used in some places.) Oh look, that service responded like a Tor node! So they block it.

We don't want that to happen, so pluggable transports need to be resistant to detection by active probing. WebTunnel achieves probing resistance by running alongside an existing webpage. When you set up a WebTunnel bridge, you must be serving a website over HTTPS already. You create a secret path and use only that path for relaying Tor traffic but serve your regular website on other paths.

For example, suppose I run example.com and my secret path is /mysecretpath. If you visit example.com/mysecretpath, I have my webserver reverse-proxy your request to the WebTunnel service. If you visit another path (example.com/someotherpath), you get an actual webpage. As we discussed before, the path in an HTTPS request is encrypted, so your ISP should not be able to tell which path you're visiting (and thus should not be able to learn the secret path). The best they can do is connect to the same domain you connected to, and if they do that, they find an actual website! Nothing suspicious about that.

Takeaways

WebTunnel seems cool. If you want to use it, you can request WebTunnel bridges from bridges.torproject.org. (Unless your ISP heavily restricts your traffic to an allowlist of protocols, you might be better off using lyrebird (obfs4), though.)

If you have a website and bandwidth to spare, considering running a WebTunnel bridge.

(And if you can't run a WebTunnel bridge but still want to help, consider installing the Snowflake browser extension, which turns your browser into a Snowflake bridge.)

Using neural nets trained on other people’s work to create (and often profit from) new work in their style without compensation is problematic. I don’t think that doing the same for upscaling algorithms is.

Upscalers can reduce the hardware requirements for games, support remastering old media, etc. which isn’t really the same as laundering someone else’s creativity and profiting from it at their expense. Upscalers feel more like bicycles for the mind than crude replacements for them.

I haven’t thought through this fully, and I’m open to being proven wrong.

Setting aside issues of DRM keys — which seem to be the only metaphorical leg holding up the DRM stool — the core question is whether the resultant product would result in losses to the copyright holder as a result of market substitute. That ultimately depends on whether the copyright owner is otherwise benefiting from the work, which is something that an app dev has no way to parse.

To borrow, the problem is with the people & their choices not the algorithms they use

We make the NVDA screen reader which reads the PC for blind users. While we support the environment, #NVDA is almost universally known as the screen reader. I only worked out "Non-Violent Direct Action" when puzzling why someone tagged us in a previous post like this. Can I please convince you to trend #DirectAction instead? If we keep hashtags related to their topic, your followers can find info on protests while those looking for screen reader info can find that info. Good luck today

According to the federal government, the cop who killed Ayotzinapa student Yanqui Kothan Gómez Peralta last Thursday "escaped" while being transferred yesterday. According to the Guerrero state government, he was never in custody.

Either way, a couple hundred students from Ayotzinapa protested at the State Prosecutor's Office demanding justice for Yanqui. At least 11 vehicles were set on fire. Later the protest moved to the state capitol building, which was the recipient of rocks and fireworks.
