We should have domain name swap parties.

I am the proud owner of feygeleh.org, if you have a worthy need for such a lovely domain name, let me know. I have been squatting on that for roughly 15 years. #mazeldon

Over the last month, 51.39 TB of data was served by the #curl website.

14.05 billion requests

99.93% cache hitrate

About one million #curl tarball downloads (guesstimate based on object size downloads)

You might have noticed already: since a few weeks, #MapComplete has a totally new search experience.

If you search something, the matching locations are shown on the map. If it matches the name of a layer or a filter, you can also opt to show only this layer or to enable this filter. For examplr, on mapcomplete.org/food, one could search for 'sushi' to only see sushi restaurants and then for 'open now'. Or search with an emoji, such as 🍕🍟🥙 or 🍙

We are once again learning the perils of unmoderated/abandon fediverse instances today...
in reply to Merry Jerry 🎄🎅🕎⛄️❄️

when spammers discover the mountain of abandoned Hubzilla instances, the digital wildfires will last weeks.
in reply to Seirdy

correction: they already discovered them but they’re not directly pinging users, just posting porn and links to gambling sites.

Good morning, North America. Good afternoon, Europe. Good evening, Australia. Oh happy day. My voice is finally back. I mean, it's been back, but now even the rasp is gone. I feel like a singer again. Wheeee! Also, if you order Walmart grocery delivery today and have to call for help, expect to be told that the hurricane is affecting everything. Yes, even if you're nowhere near it like TJ and me. Choose something else, if possible. Also, I'm so over the Voiceover crackling bug that's affecting my airPods. Thanks for being my fav part of social media, Masto.
in reply to Rosalin Kellyanna

I have the same bug and it doesn't happen everywhere, but in some apps it does. Soooo annoying! I hope your day is good, and you're well.

It's time for an update about #siteblocking in #Canada, because there have been some developments: We have one new order of a type that has become almost routine now, and one new order that's a little different, one that goes down that slippery slope many of us warned about when companies like Bell and Rogers first started seeking site blocking orders. 🧵👇🏼

in reply to Andy Kaplan-Myrth

First, instead of each rights-holder blocking one sport at a time, this year all the major broadcasters teamed up and won a "multisports" order that requires listed ISPs to block sites that carry unlicensed streams of NHL, NBA, and soccer games. They've already gotten 3 updates, adding MLB and UFC into 2026.

#TekSavvy is included in this order. Our info page with the latest order is here: teksavvy.com/policies/internet…

in reply to Andy Kaplan-Myrth

Second, now that site blocking orders are so well established to protect copyright, Indigo Books relied on them as a precedent to protect trademarks. They got an order requiring named ISPs to block access to the websites of the "Indigo Kills Kids" campaign. Since this order aims to block a website, it uses DNS blocking (like GoldTV), rather than the "dynamic" blocking orders used for streams.

#TekSavvy is not currently included in this order. Read the decision here: canlii.ca/t/k73h2

Today's challenge -- working out why GObject Introspection bitfield objects return zero when the value is bigger than MAX_UINT32. The value is correct in the .gir file, just not in the fwupd python bindings.

@ebassi @pwithnall (or anyone else) does this ring any bells please? I've opened gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gobject… with some more data.

in reply to Richard Hughes

you found a very niche limitation in both GType and introspection, congrats 😄

Super busy Tuesday here, my meetings started an hour earlier (6 AM and not 7) but it was quite an important one to not miss, so worth it, got a 30 minute break after before the next set.
Prime day is on, but I'm not sure if I have the time nor energy to browse it. On the lookout for a 20 TB back-up desktop drive though, need to push my NAS and other back-up drive to it and want at least 20 TB. I know they exist.

The woman told deputies she started feeding raccoons around her house about 35 years ago without any problems. Six weeks ago the population of raccoons "exploded.""

When I lived in Santa Cruz Mtns, a couple in the cabin above me, had been feeding raccoons for 20 years…people begged them to stop but ‘they’re so cute & they like us!’. Couple then went on a vacation, a cruise. Gone for 3 weeks. Came home and their cabin had been fully dismantled: Roof, windows, doors, deck, walls, cupboards… all of it, dismantled.

Came across some spam with the subject "Verified Damsels". Now I want a short story about the government department in charge of verifying and licensing damsels, and punishing the hero for rescuing an unverified and unlicensed damsel. And/or a damsel who has to rescue herself and go on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment because she can't get properly verified.

Western observers often express cynicism towards China’s self-proclaimed “Whole-Process People’s Democracy” without fully grasping its distinct characteristics and underlying principles. While Western liberal democracies prioritize periodic elections, China argues this approach is inherently limited, susceptible to corruption, and ultimately fails to truly represent the people’s will.

TL;DR:
1. Probably don’t add `` without guidance from a copywriter.
2. Probably don’t add `` to foreign words without expert guidance.
3. Probably don’t add `` to URLs, email addresses, code blocks, etc.
4. Probably restrict `<wbr>` to URLs, email addresses, code blocks, and similar where technical accuracy is key.
5. Probably restrict `<wbr>` to before periods and dashes and maybe slashes in URLs and emails.

these are all so so good - soft hyphens have gotten tiring when just browsing the web for their verbosity, so at this point I think my brain just skips over them as noise, but this guidance for sure needs to be out there.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg I find them visually destructive outside specific cases. A signal of poor typography (but not always).

I'm not a big fan of the account selector.

I don't like that I have to select the account and it cycles through the accounts instead of giving me a dropdown to select the account like it did in K9.

Expanding the account list to show the icons doesn't help much since I have multiple accounts on the same domain and the only identifying difference is the colour. Is there a way to customize this?

in reply to Derek McEachern

@derekmceachern Thanks for your feedback! There's also been considerable discussion of accessing the different accounts on the beta mailing list. As far as customizing this, I'll try to find an answer!

Installing Microsoft Teams on my home PC, because I need it for a meeting this morning. Went to the Microsoft Store and the first thing that comes up with the search isMicrosoft Teams with a rating of 2.3. I didn't think it would have been that high. Lol!
in reply to Andrew Hodgson

@andrew Work use a combo of teams and slack. Slack's handling of file attachments, text-based messages and threads, and the integrations outside 365 it has are superb. Be nice if they settled on one for convenience, but that'd probably be Teams
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Yeah Slack has its issues but I think fosters a discussion ethos a lot more than Teams. When I've migrated from Slack to Teams the free conversation dynamic changes a lot.

Quebec's language law may force music gear off store shelves

Yup. Franco Fascist. I thought these goons were pro-business but apparently they are not either.

and then banning Anglo channels? Non-dubbed movies?

They are going for all of that. Like Fascist.

I am more sympathetic than most to the need to ensure products & services are equitably available in french

but

at some point the gov't has to realize that the entire rest of the world is not going to bend to their whims

in reply to Rick Scott 🏳️‍⚧️

@shadowspar exactly. The requirement of a user manual in French is fine. But anything else is over reaching. "we sell 3 units a month of this"
in reply to Rick Scott 🏳️‍⚧️

I'm sure music isn't the only kind of specialty store that has a hard time sourcing products with french labelling. do they really want all these kinds of stores to shut down in Quebec, so that people have to sneak across to Ontario to buy these things?

NO ONE EVER ASKED FOR THIS #CAQASTROPHE.

And, how long before Québec cannot reach anglophone websites to purchase anything...

I use Jupyter notebooks for my data science class, and I have to extract the files and open them in VS code because the web layout is a hot steamy disaster.
To this day, I don't understand the point of Jupyter or what it even is.

using LaTeX is easy, all you need to know is that when Donald Knuth failed the Mark of Mastery Exam and lost his ability to wield a keyblade, his heart manifested that power into a new person: Tela Type

Tela had the power to wield the Fountain Keypen, which was mightier than any Keyblade.

However when Tela's best friend Roxe was consumed by darkness (creating the nobody Xerox and the heartless Bell), Tela fell into despair and lost her heart too, creating the nobody LaTeX and the heartless Metafont.

You first meet Metafont in *Kingdom Hearts e-ε: ligature drop descender*, although they aren't that important.

LaTeX first apprars in *Kingdom Hearts π-ε : hbox overfull*, although at that point they're called TeX.

They only become LaTeX in *Kingdom Hearts Literate:coded* where they merge with their digital replica in a simulation of TAOCP and discover the χ-macro that was hidden inside themselves by king Mickey.
