Having run like this for a while, my Opinions About Databases can be summed up as "for anything human-sized SQLite on solid-state storage is way, way better than anyone realizes, and there's not much room for MySQL/MariaDB in the world outside of social inertia."

If you don't need Postgres - and if don't know with empirical certainty that you need Postgres, then you don't need Postgres - then SQLite is plenty.

I vibe-coded this yesterday to help deal with my timesheet at work. I didn't find the way GitHub presented my activities useful for tracking my time.

github.com/mgifford/gh-summary

Seems to work OK. Would love feedback on how to improve it.

Dear fedi, I'm looking for a needle in a haystack, but maybe you can help.

I'm looking for a song, roughly jazz with female vocals, sung by a Finnish goup or vocalist, with lyrics in English. The parts of the lyrics I remember say something like "we could be inside each other for a hwile."

Any guesses gratefully received.

Audiobooks are a 100% valid way of reading, and if it's your primary way, I hear & honor ya.

Your irregular reminder that if you enjoy audiobooks Libro.fm is an incredibly good replacement for Audible.

Libro.fm provides DRM-free downloadable MP3 versions of the book (in addition to having an app you can use). They've had at least 90% of the books I've looked for.

They're also an employee-owned social corporation that allows you to support local independent bookstores with your purchases.

Here's a 20-minute tutorial In which I demonstrate how I use #Suno AI to cover/remix my tracks in new ways. A few people have been asking me to show this because the website's a little incomprehensible, so I thought I would do a bit of an explainer.
Here, I'm using NVDA screen-reader in windows with Google Chrome.

If you are attempting this on MacOS, you will likely have to interact with the item and move over to the play button before being able to do VO+Space to play your item. If you don't, nothing much happens.
In all other respects, MacOS works very similarly to windows, so you should be able to follow along with this demo successfully.

I realised today that I’m not really a mega fan of anything.
Like… there’s no band, show, or creator that I’m a die-hard fan of. And it kinda makes me sad. There’s this joy in being so into something that it becomes part of your identity, and I’ve never really had that. Sometimes I wish I knew what it felt like to go full feral over something. So tell me, what’s the thing you’re a mega fan of? What gets you screaming, defending, or just fully obsessed?

Please repost, as I"d love to see all the answers everywhere.

I got utterly hooked on novels by Dave Duncan, a Scotsman turned Canadian who, after retiring from geology in his 50s, ended up publishing over 60 books before his death in 2018.

I picked up the first of one of his series by pure chance, and got sucked in for days during one of the coldest winters we'd had for years. The first 3 days stuck indoors, no work, no warmth, nowhere else to go and nothing to do, set the tone for me to enjoy dozens of his stories afterward.
I'd regularly preorder one of his upcoming releases and be excited for it for weeks. The build-up and the anticipation were tremendously fun.

While I'm generally very pro-EU, this #ChatControl initiative they keep pushing - despite experts persistently debunking the rationale behind it - is indefensible.

Instead, this initiative will create an extremely invasive surveillance state where everything you type, view and receive is automatically scanned & potentially (falsely) flagged for human review.

This would mean the end of privacy.

If you are an EU-citizen, please consider writing to your MEPs.

I give #xmpp a try every few years hoping that it has become easier to use.

I recently installed Kaidan and started chatting with another person using Kaidan. I then installed Conversations by @daniel hoping I could continue the conversation there.

However, every message we had sent in @kaidan had been replaced with “This message is encrypted with OMEMO 2 but could not be decrypted”.

I guess the keys are stored locally and needs to be transferred to Conversations somehow?

I'm on xmpp.earth which seems to have good XEP support.

Where do I go from here? Thanks!

So among the various things i #selfhost is my NAS. It's just a desktop that I installed a nice disk controler and some 12K SAS drives and #TrueNAS. But it lives, like a lot of my kit, in the garage. And it's hot in the garage tonight. Ambient air temp is like 82F/28C at 23:00 at night.

Most of the time it's fine. CPUs tend to run around 45C just doin normal stuff. But when I do an scp of a film I've digitized on my laptop, it goes over gigabit ethernet and that seems to warm up the CPUs. For the whole like 45-90 seconds the scp is running, the cores get super hot. Then it calms down.

A look at the problems at Uber Freight, which has posted operating losses every year since it was founded in 2017, except for 2022, and just appointed a new CEO (Thomas Black/Bloomberg)
