We should definitely not kill Canada Post but it's kind of unacceptable that it's so badly run. It could easily even turn a profit, every other shipping company in the world does. But incompetence in government owned businesses isn't punished, that's the root cause issue I think. I am a huge supporter of unions but some of the requirements they have achieved for staff have made the service untenably expensive to run. So instead we're going to lose it which is worse.

Nice post. This reminds me of the ESRI Enterprise Geodatabase system.
You can build one into a PostgreSQL database, but you can't edit data with non-ESRI tools because it handles IDs and relations in its own way. It's built like that because the same structure is used in their other GeoDatabase formats, but it has the convenient side-effect of locking the data into their tools.
At work we have integration with Word and Excel, modifying an existing document to add data to placeholders and conform the final document, and it was a nightmare to implement. However, the documentation is good enough to get how it works, and they provide a tool to inspect the contents of the document. ➡️

Just upgraded to GNOME 49. Not 100% sure if this is related to the GNOME update, but, now, if I switch to a virtual console, then I can't switch back out. If I try to use chvt, then it sends a VT_WAITACTIVE ioctl which eventually faills with EINTR. I'm completely lost.
I've rolled back to GNOME 48 for the time being. I never saw the use of btrfs snapshots until now, but now I'm grateful. Going to update my other computer and see if I also see the problem there.
I've also encountered difficulties with the gNOME 49 upgrade. The primary issue (a necessary configuration change in /etc/nsswitch.conf) was resolved. However, Mozilla Thunderbird now crashes in a GTK 3 library call. I'm running Arch Linux.

Image text : I’ll be honest. When thinking about what books might live in me, this was never one of them. It was certainly not the book I thought I would write first. I never wanted to become known for artificial intelligence (AI) criticism at all. I want to sit in a lab and tinker with tech, building little gadgets that delight my disabled kin. I want to maintain surreptitious code bases of free little hacks that disrupt our perpetually inaccessible and downright-hostile world. I want to share disabled DIY specs through crumpled little zines posted in libraries and coffee houses. I want to run a free digital manufacturing center just for disabled people to come and build exactly what they want without a doctor, insurance company, or bank account telling them what body they’re allowed to have. But in order to do that, I have to fight the inadequacies in technology policy and medical care. And in order to do that, I have to fight the AI industrial complex. Because underneath every insurance rejection is a predictive algorithm, behind every assistive technology is a data collection scheme, and now, behind every technology policy is an AI hype man.
Is this book not available for purchase as an ebook from Springer Link in the US? I added the ebook to my cart, went to checkout, and didn't find "United States" in the list of countries.
It wasn't there as "USA" the first time either. But I went back to try again and it was there this time. Sorry for the false alarm. Part of the problem might be that I'm doing this with a screen reader. And maybe the site's custom drop-down lists weren't playing well with my browser's screwy autocomplete feature either.

The app wasn't updated since 2017, but we still see a lot of downloads for it (by F-Droid clients), so chances are folks here will still have tried it. Does it still work, so we shall keep it – or is it rather broken, so we'd better remove it from the #IzzyOnDroid repo?

And with our small team, we cannot test all the 1.3k+ apps continuously – as unfortunately our funding is not sufficient to cover even a part-time job, so we all have our $dayjobs to cover, and care for IzzyOnDroid in our spare time. Luckily, funding at least covers server costs, and thanks to NLnet we can cover some other long-due tasks…

bookmarked. I work with visually impaired students at an English University and high quality general IT training with a Visual Impairment focus eg screen readers is hard to find. There's lots of sighted numpties two pages ahead in the manual authorised in government schemes to provide training , but they often lack the deep knowledge an experienced often blind trainer has.
@doubletap I'm glad to hear about a technology trainer who includes Linux. Most of the tech training I've heard about is Windows or iOS, sometimes MacOS, rarely Android, and I've never heard of someone including Linux. That's very good to hear, and that you go into advanced topics like scripting and using the terminal.
Nice! How do you find Microsoft Office on the Mac with VoiceOver? I do have it and have tested it briefly, but just like pages I have had some issues navigating it. Don’t know if that’s me not understanding the interface or if I’m having an issue. LOL. Hard to tell sometimes. I know plenty of Microsoft Office on windows, especially given that I teach it. But I’d love to get to know how to use it effectively on the Mac.

And carry 100 bits of entropy. The redirect goes past www.google.com so they can hoover up your google cookies also...

Here's something @MutedTrampet might find interesting. There's a program called Ptmid for MS-DOS to convert, with many restrictions, MIDI files to Mod files. A zip containing source code, docs, and DOS executable can be found at: archive.org/download/ptmid3_zi… and of course it doesn't want to compile under modern compilers or I'd make a Windows binary. Anyway I spent some time playing with it last night and one of the results is a strange conversion of a MIDI I made years ago that @BorrisInABox and @cordova5029 among others will no doubt appreciate. If you create a shortcut in ios 26, the last element in the shortcut content panel now says "share, share share, button." In case you didn't get it the first time.
First of all: Thank you for your work! I use it on Android alongside with other #Matrix Clients. So far I remember, the onboarding was good. Generelly it feels fast (after) sync. The chatlist items, for me, could have a little bit more padding. The gui with the bubble style in the Chats I don't like much. It's nice to have some settings for gui. The accent color could have more options.
