Visiting Taiwan made me sad about the state of English trains. I took a train from Hsinchu to Taipei, which is a little bit further than from Cambridge to London. It took just over half an hour, with multiple tops along the way, and cost £7 each way. There were three trains per hour (not quite in a uniform distribution, but close enough that I didn't really need to plan the train I'd take, I just turned up and got on the next one). A business class ticket would have cost £20 (though does limit you to a single train).
The Cambridge to London trains have less far to go, take at least 50% longer, and cost several times as much.
And governments keep wondering why they're having to spend so much maintaining motorways and no one takes the trains.

Re: Framework, but also extrapolating more generally? If your moderation policy, your community stewardship approach, your whole way of interacting with people isn't robust to literal Nazis trying to fuck with your shit, then it just does not work in 2025.
I don't care if you call it a CoC, the paradox of tolerance, or what, but you *need* a strategy for how to tell Nazis to fuck off.
Nazis aren't just clumps of pixels you shoot in Wolfenstein, they're real, actual, malicious fucking people doing shit like tearing down the actual, literal White House. There's a pretty good chance that, if you're responsible for a community you love and care about, some real-life fucking Nazis will show up and start testing your boundaries, checking whether they can subvert your strategy.
So don't wait for that shit, get out in front of it and be prepared to tell them to fuck off.
In the Framework case, "you can't call people Nazis" is a terrible moderation policy that serves to tell Nazis that they're completely at home in that community. They are completely shielded from any critique that accurately describes their views, actions, and political allegiance.
That fits perfectly with the fascist methodology of destroying truth. No matter your intentions, that policy might as well be a "Nazis Welcome" sign on the front door.
Fuck AI. That is all for today. I might not even buy a new computer for at least a ddecade if this AI hardware is all they cram into their chips. No way. Right now, the difference from a 2023 era to a 2025 processor is the addition of more powerful NPUs, just so Windows or whatever browser can use it. No thanks. For performance, there's about a 20% uplift today, but is that 20% right now worth it to sacrificing your soul to the NPU which now monitors every action you do and sounds, maybe later camera of your machine to know what's around it? Wow, just wow. (side-note: It's not the NPU that's the issue, it's the way it gets used. Linux won't sell you out the same way, for example.) If you would have told me computing was taking a darker turn like this 10 years ago, I wouldn't have believed it. With these more powerful AI chips, things like Click-to-Do in Windows and other wild changes, to me it's not looking bright at all.
OMG. I just got that GPU. Yes. I use it over OCULink. It's decent even for 20B models, I'd say 27B and above struggles, but for 20B, 14B, it's very snappy. There's another one, the "ONEXGPU 2-2nd Generation eGPU Graphic Card Dock Expansion Card with AMD Radeon RX 7800M, 12GB GDDR6 " - it's a step up, but man, it goes for like $1000. Oof. So I think for the price (around $500) the 7600M isn't a bad deal at all. I also tried it over thunderbolt, it's not bad, you do lose a bit of the performance which can be noticed on larger models. So OCULink is the way to go if you have a port for it on your PC, but Thunderbolt 3 will do in a pinch (although you'll need a cable as it doesn't come with one, only type-C to HDMI)
@Blobsta yeah, while the 780M inside this Rizen 9 is really good, could probably pump out 1080P at low-to-medium frame rates, I think over thunderbolt you can get solid 1440P at medium on the 7600M in most cases. So you should still see a bit of an uplift in games even over Thunderbolt I'd think.
@flyingpenguinMwauthzyx @Blobsta it definitely is. Well, since they have dedicated Cuda cores for it. But Radion has RDNA and ROCm which is really workable for quantized models. You probably won't do heavy training, but inferencing is a lot easier.
@danestange yeah, I have the M4Pro, and at least even if you enable Apple Intelligence a lot of what it then gets used for is under your control. But then I begin to use VoiceOver and realize how clunky things are with it, like the terminal and such, and give up on Mac after about 6-8 hours of using it. Sigh. So no platform is perfect right now, in fact it's gotten more imperfect as time goes on.

Maybe the perfect world isn't even required for that, just more work on linux accessibility from the smart coder folks or whoever builds these things. Stormux is one arch linux distro that I really do like. I'd love to install linux on a partition on my m1 mac a lot, do you know how fun that'd be?? I wish though that I could use my mantis q40 or ereader with a bluetoothed orca. What do you think about the humanware ereader? I'm about to maybe turn my new sandisk ultraflare 256 gig 20 dollar flash drive into a portable OS because why not? Yes, the way the NPU is used is what matters, of course, I find it a bit funny that they usually quote it in Int8 TOPS but for Int16 models which tend to be the ones used a lot quantized right now, those NPUs would still be fairly useless. Linux will probably be the only OS that gives you control over how and when it's used and if you choose to install AI things that can do so.
You can buy a decent Mini PC with a 6000 or 7000 series Ryzen APU that does not have this still quite easily, I am not sure if the 8000 series Ryzen have a Npu or not.
Honestly, I absolutely understand your point. I don't whant to pay for AI hardware that i don't even really use. The problem is: You have to. If you need A new pc, you have really no other option than getting A computer with this NPU nonsense.
And honestly: I do think the NPU is nonsense. Apple for example claims that apple inteligence helps really much, and does it? No, actually not. If this inteligence actually becomes inteligent, it might look different, but for now, its crap that's just good for marketing purposes.
