Thanksgiving

Anyways, I'm not from "America", but if you're celebrating thanksgiving. Consider maybe not next year.

The holiday is tied up with genocide and cannot be uncoupled from that. I don't think it is something to celebrate.

Thanksgiving

"All of us, regardless of background, should be horrified by genocide, as much as we would be of other facts that we don’t shut down discourse on through self-indulgent projections of innocence, like the world being round despite the fact that some insist is not so. We should all be enraged."

Jumping off what @blaine is saying here:

I work in professional fact-checking and content moderation for my day job at meedan.com and I have begun conversations about ways to do content moderation as a federated service that admins can pay to subscribe to (where moderators are paid a living wage, maybe in worker owned coops even, as opposed to big social media companies using basically sweatshop moderation labor)

"Biggest takeaway: the media lied to us.

The evidence is overwhelming now.

Last winter, the media made a concerted effort to convince Americans that Covid had become mild. They said catching Omicron would protect us from future variants, and that we could ditch our masks. Newspapers were filled with op-eds basically telling us to go out and shop, celebrate, and get infected. They blanketed the internet with stories about the “relief” people felt catching Covid.

"Anyone who disagreed got labeled a doomsayer.

The optimists were all wrong.

There was no evidence to support any of these myths, just arrogant assertions from the same handful of pundits. The actual studies tell the truth. You don’t want to catch Covid once. You certainly don’t want to catch it multiple times. We should be getting boosted. We should be wearing masks.

We should be protecting our children.

@fireborn when you do pull requests, can you create a different branch for each one, and only request one thing per branch? The last batch has some tangles with things that are already in master, and basically we are adding in things manually because it's easier this way. With single pulls per branch, it should make it much easier to do this in the future.

What's your opinion on doing this for web apps like Gmail, Twitter, Mastodon, etc.? In these cases, I tend to think of the app as a semi-permanent thing with its own context, not a transient thing that I return to with the back button. Pressing enter on a link and having it effectively replace my email/social media app seems super counter-intuitive to me. The exceptions don't quite cover that.

"We don’t yet know what an Internet with less virality would look like, or whether it would be as compelling as what came before. But it is heartening, after watching Musk’s erratic Twitter despotism, to imagine community-driven spaces that are only as good as the hosts who moderate them and the people they attract. Perhaps we are undergoing a collective period of relearning what we need and want from our digital lives."

One of the coolest tools we use at #1Password has been #opensource ’d!

I present to you Typeshare 2.0! A way to share Rust types across the FFI (supports, Swift, Kotlin, TypeScript, and Go). We use it everyday and I love it, makes things so easy and awesome.

You all want to know how to find interesting people to follow on Mastodon -- and I'm going to tell you how 😃

Go to your instance's profiles directory. This is located on the lower left corner of your screen.

Or visit: https://<nameofinstance.com>/directory

Totally tooting my own Horn Bet, but if anyone enjoys the game of #Craps, I coded an #accessible version of it with #Python called Oh Craps! along with the 3 other casino mother games that can be played in #Terminal or your command line of choice. Couldn't find any accurate nor accessible casino games out there so I just built my own! I also created and maintain a compendium of Craps strategies for fellow #Dice nerds: marconius.com/craps

While playing with the #Mastodon api, i wrote a little desktop notification daemon in #rustlang.
So much fun!!

"The latest change would mean all documents required or permitted to be signed under the Corporations Act of 2001 can be signed in a “technology neutral” way. Notices currently required to be published in newspapers would instead need to be published in a way that is “publicly available and reasonably prominent”."
