Mindblowing 🤯
#Whisper is an #openSource #speechRecognition model written in #Python by #OpenAI. I’ve just seen it in action. Extract an #mp3 from a video, run it through Whisper, and it turns every spoken word into text. It even does a very decent job in #Danish. Perfect for subtitling #TV and #video. I am very impressed.

Thunderbird Daily users should start noticing something new in the app menu 😉
(This is purely in the testing phase right now, and as always we don't recommend Alpha software in a production environment.)
EDIT: Please read this post before deciding to test it thunderbird.topicbox.com/group…
@techassi Yes, that is absolutely planned and a vital feature! It will be included when Thunderbird Supernova launches next summer.
(Right now we're just testing very core functionality)
@coolansplanet We feel like there IS opportunity for Thunderbird (or a future Thunderbird product) to be incorporated into the Fediverse in a cool, meaningful way.
Just not sure what that looks like yet.
⚠️ WARNING: Do not use #Hive Social!
According to research conducted by @zerforschung, the #Twitter alternative Hive Social has got a number of dangerous #security vulnerabilies.
They allow attackers to completely access and even to partly edit anyone's data, including private posts, deleted direct messages, e-mail addresses and phone numbers signed up with etc.
Once again this demonstrates that you should not rely on closed-source software to guard sensitive data.

"It was my belief that as Mastodon adoption grew, the moderators of whichever instance you chose to use would have to deal ever-increasing volumes of abuse. It’d be like how email providers have to develop spam filters to combat incoming spam from every other provider (but so much still gets through).
After a month on #Mastodon, I’ve realized I was wrong."

Had a really fun conversation about Mastodon and the Fediverse today with folks at the #Oregon State University #OpenSource Lab, @osuosl.
If you don't know about them (or if you do!) please give them a follow. It's a great program for getting university students hands-on experience with key #FreeSoftware project infrastructure.
I’ve recently released gpu-io – a #webgl computing library for real-time physics simulations, particle/agent-based systems, cellular automata, image processing, and general purpose GPU computations.
Examples: apps.amandaghassaei.com/gpu-io…

gpu-io makes it easy to build GPU-accelerated apps without worrying about low-level WebGL details and browser inconsistencies. Designed for WebGL2 with fallbacks for WebGL1. WebGPU support is planned! More in thread 🧵...

Counting unique visitors without using cookies, UIDs or fingerprinting. – notes.normally.com/cookieless-…
This is why you should clear your cache frequently. Privacy Browser does (by default) every time you run Clear and Exit.
Building a web analytics service without cookies poses a tricky problem: How do you distinguish unique visitors?Nic Mulvaney (Normally Notes)
@futureisfoss That is correct. Closing the last tab by tapping on the X runs Clear and Exit. This is documented in Guide > Local Storage in the app.
Clear and Exit is not run if the app is closed by the OS (for example, by viewing the thumbnails of all running apps and swiping Privacy Browser away, or by rebooting the OS while Privacy Browser is running).
@futureisfoss By the way, in the next release Privacy Browser will also run Clear and Exit when the last tab is closed by the OS back button or gesture, which happens if the last tab does not have any back entries in the WebView history.

Something I've started doing for my command-line tools is including a page in their online documentation that shows the --help output for all of their sub-commands
I mainly do this because having the help output displayed online somewhere makes it much easier to casually review for opportunities to improve it!
For sqlite-utils for example I realized that having example usage for each command is a really big usability improvement.
Here's that page: sqlite-utils.datasette.io/en/l…
