There is now a much easier way to follow people on the fedi.directory site.

If you install a special extension on your web browser, you will be able to follow accounts by just clicking "follow" on their profile pages, even if they are on different servers. The browser extensions mean that the follow will happen instantly without you having to sign in again.

More info including links to extensions at:

This also works on other Fediverse directories!

We’re finally back on Google Play!! Thanks to all the hard work by joseluismarti and Fuzzard! We have the Kodi v20 RC1 available if you opt into testing: play.google.com/apps/testing/o… and thanks to jogal/thexei, we finally have a new build in the MS Store which should work well again on Xbox! Keep in mind, we had to push our v20 RC1, so still a little rough around the edges.

The accessibility for the blind advent calendar: day 14 - France
Since some time I have been drawn to research Minitel, a French Videotex-based system for accessing information that predates the Internet. It was a revolution in terms of digitalization which made activities such as buying train and plane tickets, signing up for classes and reading newspapers digitalized as early as the 80's. You can read more about it in the following Wikipedia article:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel
There were many devices invented to make Minitel accessible to the blind, although the system itself wasn't designed with this target group in mind. Mostly, they were external speech synthesizers like in the case of Lectel:
lemonde.fr/archives/article/19…
or the Valentine text-to-speech card for the Apple II:
blog.atalan.fr/valentine-carte…
The history of the Eurobraille company, the makers of the popular Esys, Esytime and B.Note Braille displays, starts also with a speech synthesizer for the Minitel terminals.
eurobraille.fr/notre-histoire/
As I found out, however, most of France's blind community at that time did not have access to this kind of technology and Minitel only became accessible on a global scale in the 90's when regular PC's did but then it was almost the time of the Internet so it never gained the same momentum as it did with the society at large. Pity as this could have been an opportunity to push the inclusion of blind and partially sighted people to whole new levels.
Always design with accessibility from the start!

V Chersonské oblasti byly objeveny dětské mučírny.

Rusové do zadržených řezali nožem, pálili rožhaveným kovem.

#FreeSoftwareAdvent for today: Hammerspoon. Another macOS tool that makes the platform usable.

Script the OS, add hotkeys, all from Lua, a not wholly unpleasant programming language. One thing that it desperately needs is good documentation, and if I had a few weeks of uninterrupted time and no responsibility, I'd write said documentation. Otherwise, you need to do a lot of googling to find blog posts and code samples because the API docs are a bit mystical.

Mastodon legal
From the article: "CyberScoop spoke with several Mastodon instance administrators whose member numbers ranged from the dozens to the tens of thousands about how they would handle a law enforcement request. Most ran their instance as a hobby and none had a legal background."

I just wrote a song with lyrics and chords supplied by #ChatGPT!

Recorded it for you, enjoy!

The prompt:
"Create an emo song with lyrics and guitar chords that evoke sadness and loneliness. Make the chorus have different chords than the verses."

Verse 1:
G C
Lost and alone
Am D
In this cold world
G C
My heart is a stone
Am D
No one to hold

Chorus:
F C
Emptiness fills me
G D
Loneliness chokes me
F C
I am fading away
G D
In my own misery

(There's more but no room)

Encouraging to see the dream of #AccessKit (github.com/AccessKit/accesskit) becoming a reality. I just finished the first iteration of macOS support for text edit controls, and the work I did in egui, which I had tested with the AccessKit Windows adapter, only required a one-line fix to be fully functional on macOS. And even that change wasn't exactly Mac-specific, just something that didn't happen to be needed on Windows. Also, integrations in other GUI toolkits are in the works. #accessibility

Anti-racist course for Admins and Moderators, info inside!

OKAY, #fedimins! I got some good news.

There's an upcoming course with the Anti-Racist Classroom, for Community and Moderation. They had Admins and Moderators in mind for this course.

"Antiracism and Communicating Online
In this two part series, come together in community to discuss and problem solve the challenges of communicating and moderating online with an antiracist lens."

This classroom is aimed at white people. The courses are discussion based, so there's no sequential curriculum, You can sign up as long as you have a commitment to Anti-racism (that means awareness of your actions in this case, and willingness to keep growing)

The first cohort is on the 20th and 27th of December (the two parts, one on each)

You can view more info, and how to sign up here:
docs.google.com/document/d/1O9…

It's a paid course, and luckily there is a stipend if you can't afford it.
You can even donate some money to help other people attend the course.

I took my first anti-racist course with them (their 101 course) back in January this year.

If there's still interest, but these dates don't work for you, because it's short notice or anything else, they will be looking for more opportunities in the new year. So still let them know!

Tuesday, January 24th, 6-7 PM EST
"

Additional info
You need to send the payment and stuff by Friday, January 13th for Parenting as an Antiracist Practice

(the info for how to do this is in the same document as the other first post)

Additional course from the Anti-Racist classroom: Building Your Antiracist Journey (101)

" Finally, the third section we'll have is the first course again, Building Your Antiracist Journey, which will be on:
Sunday, January 15th, 2-3 PM EST
Sunday, January 22nd, 2-3 PM EST
Sunday, January 29th, 2-3 PM EST
Sunday February 5th, 2-3 PM EST "

This is their course I've referred to as Anti-racism 101.
Highly recommend it. I took this one even though I thought I was beyond 101, I still felt it was very valuable for me to both be part of helping other people on their journey, but also learning a few more things myself.

You need to sign up by: Wednesday, January 11th for Building Your Antiracist Journey

again, go back to the first post for the info on how to sign up! (it's the same for each)

And if you can't sign up to any of these right now, but are interested in the future. Sign up to the mailing list here:
