I'm still concerned but the Python Software Foundation's post about the #EU's Cyber Resilience Act (#CRA) makes me optimistic that it could work for #FreeSoftware. I do agree with the core idea that #commercial #software companies should be held more accountable than they currently are. The key is getting it just right so that anyone can write whatever free software they feel like writing, and share it on the internet, without having to get a lawyer first.

People defending AI scraping practices say: “well, humans do the same. They read then remember what they’ve read.” That analogy is flawed:

1. We pay for access
2. We don't swallow Terabytes per second
3. We don't constantly retrain our parameters on Terabytes of the same data
4. We don't resell those patterns
5. We are not commercial machines

General IT copy ethics should look at it from different ethical scholarly perspectives. F.i. Deontological: does someone taking advantage of a new technology and resell someone else's work by automated alteration at global scale define a pattern that can become common practice? Eudemonistic: Does it further individual happiness? Virtue ethics: Is it beautiful, truthful, good? Analytic: How does one talk about AI, human creativity and copying in a coherent way?

Copyright/IP adversaries and OpenAI/Microsoft are strange bed fellows. The issue with copyright and IP is that over time it pretty much perverted its original idea (protecting the original author from being ripped off). IP law allows money extraction by big commercial entities. As a small commercial entity, copyright is not your first priority. Copy ethics matter. Copy ethics matter actively and passively, to you as copying and copied subject. ia.net/topics/copycats-and-oth…

A couple of Android developers and I are organizing an Android App Developer Meetup at Day 3 (tomorrow) of #37C3.

„Are you developing an Open Source App for Android? Is your App distributed over #fdroid? Are you using reproducible builds yet? Do you have an opinion on Java 21 vs Kotlin? Do you have a favorite restriction Google introduced in a recent Android version?
If the answer is yes to any of those question the Android Open Source App Developer Meetup is for you!“

Yesterday, the German politician Wolfgang Schäuble died. While he wasn’t Kissinger-level evil, he was still ultra-conservative, corrupt, and deeply misanthropic.

That’s why it feels weird reading all those articles and commentaries in German media praising his record-long career in parliament without even mentioning all the inhuman shit he’s done over the past few decades.

It might sound harsh, but we’re better off without politicians like Schäuble.

Checking in on whether #bluesky / #atproto has become any more like a communication medium, and... nope. almost unchanged since i looked at it last in June. Bluesky is a spectator platform where a small number of accounts receive most of the visibility and smaller accounts are effectively invisible. The introduction of new feed algorithms (to the degree that happened, there aren't really many that I can find in wide use) did not change that. This is a non-normative analysis: in some cases, it is good to have a medium that promotes some very small number of posts and accounts, eg. to surface singular events, etc.

From a 25h sample of the firehose...
- 600k posts, 2.4m likes, 250k boosts, 350k follows
- 40% of posts receive 0 likes, 70% receive <= 1
- accounts in the 99th percentile of likes received 44% of likes, accounts in the 95th percentile received 74%
- 40% of posts were from accounts within the top 95th percentile of accounts by likes received.
- the maximum number of likes for a post by an account not in the top 95% is 32.

The first plot below shows the cumulative sum of likes received on the y axis against each account in the sample on the x axis - this includes accounts that didnt' post during the sample (but would still have posts that could be liked, so this also shows the extreme recency bias). The second plot is a hockeystick showing the number of likes (*not* cumulative sum) received on the y axis per post on the x axis.

For background, the default algorithm only cares about likes, boosts don't matter, which is why i am calculating things by likes here - they are the primary algorithmic signal.

These are the same calculations that I did back in June, but this time i'm leaving the firehose open to do a longer sample to be able to parse momentary virality from persistent effects.

The spam and abuse problems of ActivityPub and the fediverse are only likely to worsen. I run a Pleroma instance of which I am the only user. Eventually, I'll probably have to block entire domains. This documentation reveals how to do it using the Pleroma Message Rewrite Facility.

I wonder if people realize their environmental criticism of proof-of-work cryptocurrencies also applies to machine learning or "AI".

The same environmentally disastrous pop-up datacenters cryptomining Ethereum are now making even more money doing AI workloads.

Telegram leaks your IP address to anyone in your contacts during a call. And a researcher has created a tool to easily exploit this.

#Telegram says this is expected behavior, so there's nothing to fix or change.
