National campaigns receive a ton of money, but can't always deploy it locally in the places that the Electoral College, gerrymandering, and … shenanigans mean it needs to be spent. But figuring out which local campaigns *can* use it is a lot of work. This site is the output of that work.
Maybe you've got a limited budget for political donations and you don't know where to spend it; a few bucks in a presidential campaign feels like a drop in an ocean. Maybe you've got a big budget but you've maxed out your direct donations to national candidates and you don't know where else to spend the rest of it, because you're skeptical of PACs. Since the slate features 18 candidates, you can donate up to your limit on each one. In both cases, this is a high-impact use of your funds.
I've finished this site later than I wanted to, so there's precious little time left in the election. Even if you can't donate, please boost this *widely*, because we are still in the window where it could make a really big difference.

This number might seem surprisingly small next to the millions and billions of dollars being raised in high-profile national campaigns, but that's kind of the point here; these smaller state-level races are starved for resources and this is where conservative ghouls have been eating our lunch for years, infiltrating the machinery of local elections, state offices, etc.
Refreshing social media feeds and podcasts to listen to whatever fresh outrage has occurred each day has not made me feel better even once, but refreshing this site and seeing the total raised number ticking up, even just by a couple of bucks, is one of the best mental health interventions I've had this year. It's just nice to see people I know giving something directly.
The goal will bump up to a new one if we can meet this one, of course; the campaigns can use plenty more than this. But it would be great to cross this threshold.
And we made it, and then some. On to the next goal: $60k.

This is a repository of apps to be used with your F-Droid client. Applications in this repository are official binaries built by the original application developers, taken from their resp. repositories (mostly Github, GitLab, Codeberg).
For those of you who are switching to #Thunderbird from #Outlook, do the following to ensure as seamless an experience as possible while using a #screenreader. Note, these do not have to be done in this order. 1. If preferred, add your account by filling in the form that is presented on the screen which appears for the first time you open Thunderbird. This will get your first Email account connected properly to TB. 2. Once you are presented with the main TB window and the various folders (inbox, sent, etc.), you know your account has successfully been added. Press F8 to disable the preview pane. This will reduce clutter and allow you to simply press Enter on a message to open it rather than having to navigate it in the main TB window. 3. Open the Tools menu with Alt+T, then press Uparrow until you get to Settings and press Enter. Note, this is not the same as Account Settings. 4. Once in Settings, find the following items and make sure they are set as shown below. A. Under General heading. When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area Alt+Shift+W check box not checked. This will prevent Thunderbird from showing its normal startup page and reduce the resulting clutter in the main TB window. B. Under General heading, optional. When Thunderbird is minimized, move it to the tray Alt+Shift+m check box not checked. When this checkbox is checked, every time you minimize the application, Thunderbird moves to the system tray and consequently requires activation every time you want to quickly get back to it. I personally find this bothersome, so I have disabled this particular behavior. C. Under General heading, optional. Hide system window titlebar Alt+Shift+H check box not checked. I personally like all the information I can get when reading my titlebar, so I prefer to have this disabled. D. Under Incoming Mails heading, Optional. Show an alert Alt+Shift+S check box not checked. Note, do not disable this setting if you desire to change the setting below it. If desired, change the setting below first, then move back and change this one afterward if preferred. When this item is checked, the screenreader will automatically announce when each message arrives. This is a bit too chatty for my personal preference, so I have it disabled. E. Under Incoming Mails heading, optional. Use the system notification check box not checked. Note, change this setting first if desired before changing the one above it, as this checkbox becomes unavailable when the setting above is disabled. This item allows Thunderbird to send a system notification to the Windows 10/11 Action Center. You get the system notification sound, as well as any accompanying speech and can view the notifications that way. I personally find this overkill, so I have disabled it. F. Under Incoming Mails heading. Play a sound Alt+Shift+d check box checked. This will allow Thunderbird to play a sound whenever a new message arrives. You can either use the sound that has been set up for the default Windows notification sound for mail or choose your own by specifying the file you would prefer using the Browse option. G. Under Reading and Display Heading. Set Open New Messages In to A New Message Window. This will exhibit the more familiar behavior of Outlook and open the message in its own window when you press Enter on it. H. Under Reading and Display heading, optional. Close message window/tab on move or delete Alt+Shift+C check box checked. This tells Thunderbird to close the message window if you happen to move or delete it from the main TB window. I personally have this enabled for convenience. I. Under Reading and Display heading, optional. Preferred Address Display Format set to Name Only. I prefer this because it cuts down on chatter. This way, as you arrow through messages, you will see only the name of the sender along with other header information, rather than both the name and Email address. 5. Once all the settings are to your liking, press Control+W to close Settings and return to the main TB window. 6. Open the View menu with Alt+V and press Rightarrow on the Toolbars menu. Uncheck all the items there except for Status Bar. This results in less clutter in the main TB window. 7. Return to the View menu with Alt+T and press Rightarrow on Layout. Press Enter on Classic View. This optimizes the view a little bit more for screenreader use. 8. From the main TB Window, Shift+Tab until you find the Message List Display Options button. Activating this will bring up a context menu. Once in this menu, make sure that Table View is checked. This will allow you access to message headers and the ability to order them how you would like. 9. Finally, from the message list in the main TB window, Shift+Tab once. You'll find a toolbar that consists of several buttons. These are your message headers. If you wish your screenreader to announce Read Status first, find the Sort By Read Status button, then press alt+leftarrow. This will move the header over. Note, this does not mean you will be sorting message by Read Status. Sort By is announced because if you click on these headers, you can sort the messages by the header that is selected. Use Alt+Leftarrow or Alt+Rightarrow to find the preferred position of the selected header. To check or confirm the order of your headers, press Tab and arrow through your message list. I have Read Status first, followed by attachments and so on. This makes the reader announce the read status of the message, then whether or not there are attachments, followed by whatever header (e.g. correspondents) comes next. Change the order of the message headers to match how you would like your reader to announce the associated items as you arrow through your message list. Press F6 and Shift+F6 to jump quickly between Email folders and message lists.

I'm going to push back on this. The tendency of mail clients to do this (including one I previously wrote) makes us more vulnerable to phishing attacks, because it's not easy to check that the sender's email address is legitimate.

Very nice recommendations! Moving around the settings I also found something cool I didn't know existed: you can set up TB to indicate name and email address, but name only for people in the addressbook. That way when only the name is read you know it's a trusted (or at least known) address.
Just in case people are wondering, here is a comprehensive list of keyboard shortcuts native to #Thunderbird. I will include the link at the end of this post. Be aware, the terminology is a little weird (meta for control in particular), but an explanation to the terminology and what it means is given on the page. Control+W, for example, is listed as Meta+W. Apart from that, it's a very comprehensive list and actually includes keyboard shortcuts for several different mail clients at once on the same table. My great grandparents' names are on that list I just linked. And when we were learning about what the other kids in school would call "the holocaust", my grandmother would often speak about her experience using french words and phrases, because, you know. It happened to her, and when it happened to her it happened in french.
And that's the word she would use, in French. "Déportations". As in "mémorial des déportations", which is what a lot of holocaust museums are called in France.
For me, the phrase "mass deportation" has a visceral resonance more like "fucking kill your whole family" than "fiscal policy".
Which makes me feel absolutely insane when horse-race pundits say it. "Will fucking killing your whole family reduce housing prices? Fucking killing your whole family is very popular among men 18-34."
So, yeah. Make a plan to vote for Democrats. Donate to Democrats. Get out the vote for Democrats. A vote for Democrats might not be perfect, but it is a vote *against* fucking killing somebody's whole family.
Of course the Maga party is not *exactly* the Nazi party, I do not think Jews will be first on the list; we will not have a play-by-play Holocaust re-run. But they *are* playing the hits by starting with "the communists", which some of you may recall begins a famous poem.

Yes, I agree with Domingos. Kerstin Probiesch has also written an article about this, although this also heavily emphasizes the case in PDF documents. The problem is that, for the screen reader to switch the language, one voice has to stop mid sentence, switch the voice to one that speaks the other language, speak the word or phrase, then switch back, which can take half a second each. It ruins the whole sentence melody, sounds as if you were to take a breath in mid sentence, disconnecting the words in a very unnatural manner for no apparent reason. I find it quite annoying if it happens too often. I tend to switch off language switching for that reason. Full sentences or paragraphs are no issue, single words in a sentence quickly become a huge annoyance.
@Marco This is what we teach for 10+ years. Individual words should not be marked with different languages. (I think framing that language attributes are damaging is a bit overdramatic tho.)
@yatil That sounds so wrong. Why should we encode the current incapabilities of screenreaders into our documents?! The screenreader could easily recognize short segments and decide not to switch language profiles.

Nice. Other thing: I’ve the app on two devices. New Mail, little (1) at the App icon. I open the app, mark the mail as read. On second device: still the alert for a new mail. Have to open the app on 2nd device as well - mark as read. 🤷♂️
FYI sender or subject works only when I open your app but it does not notify before. Changed notification content back to 'No sender or subject'. With last option I received a notification about new email.

I thought I understood the extent to which the broad availability of mobile location data has exacerbated countless privacy and security challenges. That is, until I was invited along with four other publications to be a virtual observer in a 2-week test run of Babel Street, a service that lets users draw a digital polygon around nearly any location on a map of the world, and view a time-lapse history of the mobile devices seen coming in and out of the area.
The issue isn't that there's some dodgy company offering this as a poorly-vetted service: It's that *anyone* willing to spend a little money can now build this capability themselves.

It's been suggested this could be a dynamic coloration based on androids dynamic themeing. Nope, changed my wallpaper to completely different colors. I also tried applying the "color palette" feature (which was off) to make my whole OS pink and blue. Still brown.
I'm starting to think we have too many dark mode switches. You should have one, not multiple intricately nested ones, but I fully understand why it's not easy to make it work that way.
It's not the "eye comfort shield" blue-light filter either. When that's on, the UI of the Browser and OS are affected, not just Google, and Google looks different: this is a clear theme, not just a full screen color filter.
For my final test, I need to wait until it's "a time Google thinks I should be awake" in my timezone, because right now my leading theory is that Google is applying their own blue-light-filter by switching into a second THIRD SEARCH SKIN based on the current timezone + location.
And when I log out*/use private browsing/use incognito: it doesn't know my location to personalize it to.
*haven't actually tried logging out, just private modes. I hope that is not an oversight.

It's also possible there is nothing at all I can do that affects this, and it's just some A/B testing that one of my accounts got in the segment for and the other didn't.
In 1948, B. F. Skinner's "Superstition in the Pigeon" showed that if you fed pigeons at completely random times, they would still try to predict when they'd be fed. Absent any information or pattern for when they'll be fed, they become "superstitious". The repeat specific behaviors, turning in place, waving, pecking at a specific spot on the floor...
They do this, he asserts, because they're trying to repeat the meaningless actions that happened the last time they "won", and got fed. It's like a lucky pair of pants you always wear when your team wins.
In both cases, there's no action that leads to the win condition, and no information to accurately predict the outcome.
But both our brains and the pigeon's brain don't work like that. They assume there are patterns and tries to find them. They assume it's not just all random and unpredictable.
That's usually a good thing! It clearly is very useful, for both us and pigeons, to figure out the patterns... because usually there are!
That's why we evolved a "pattern finding" brain. Because there's patterns in the world, and recognizing them is useful.
Anyway, I think of those pigeons, spinning in place, perhaps praying to some God of Food Pellets they invented, and how they don't know there's no pattern and all there actions are meaningless. The cruel scientist man built this game so you can't win, and worse: you don't know you can't win, so you have to keep trying.
I thing about them and how I've been doing professional "computer stuff" for like two and a half decades now and BOY does it feel like we're spinning pigeons a frightening amount of the time.

Bandwidth demands are modest—just a few gigs weekly. No fancy tunneling involved either. It’s just a straightforward router setup forwarding a couple of ports, a script that updates the server’s IP with my registrar as needed, and a robust Fail2ban rule set to keep things a bit secure.
Delivered where? Are others I've downloaded from YouTube (& other sites) also delivered by RSS? I don't subscribe to a feed reader, download podcast apps or give any of them my email address. (I've nothing against RSS.)
The program you use to download podcasts, whether that is Apple Podcasts, Antennapod, or something else, is an RSS reader.
Podcasts are structured as attachments inside of an RSS feed. The way you listen to a podcast is by downloading and playing an MP3 (streaming is just a form of downloading).
It is downloaded to your device by your podcast app.
The way the podcast app finds those MP3 files is by loading and parsing an RSS feed.
