@christianschwaegerl I'm switching between word processors based on the task and often, there's no way for me to figure out where anything is in MS Word, while I find it intuitively in LibreOffice.
Once, I literally spent an eternity figuring out removing yellow highlighting in MS Word because I wasn't prepared that there are two distinct types of yellow highlighting in the software that look the same, act differently and are found in very different non-obvious places of the user interface. (There are a lot of Google hits of people asking for help with the same problem in MS Word, so I'm not the only one who tripped over this.)
Yes, LibreOffice isn't a UI beauty, but MS Word's reputation of being user friendly can only be explained with muscle memory of people who trained on these weird inconsistencies since years and by now are able to stop thinking about them.
@hzulla Fully agree and there are many more reasons to avoid MS Office and Apple pages is at least as bad - it’s just that @libreoffice could easily offer sth more modern and somehow doesn’t care.
@christianschwaegerl @hzulla Why would you say this is a "1990s" design, when office suites didn't have tabbed interfaces in the 1990s? Also, saying we "don't care" is really unfair to the hard-working volunteers who do so much to give the whole world a free office suite. They do all they can, with extremely limited resources, in their spare time, and then people on social media say they "don't care". Very demoralising for them.

Maybe join the Design team calls and see what they're working on, or read their minutes: listarchives.libreoffice.org/g… – Does that look like people who "don't care"? There is a lot of work going on, from volunteers in their spare time, who get hugely demoralised by such flippant remarks. Why not contribute back and help them, or fund someone?

FWIW, my 15yo much prefers it, too, so it's not just "what I was used to in the 90s" (or "before Office 2007 made everyone re-learn how to use MS Office from scratch", as the case may be).

@libreoffice @christianschwaegerl @hzulla I grew up with the 90's Windows UI and have formative memories of using MS Office as a schoolkid in the early 2000's. A few years later the ribbon UI appeared, making me not find anything, while Windows has lost all semblance of the visual clarity it had in those days - I know enough about computers to have forgotten more than most will ever learn, yet I'm also blind to Windows 11's new context menu's copy/cut/paste icons.
LibreOffice intuitively works "the way office suites have worked all my life". I'm glad that when I need it, it hasn't gone and changed to follow some new (or resurgent old) design trend.
Careless redesign doesn't work for Windows, it doesn't work for MacOS, and it certainly doesn't work for for underfunded FOSS productivity tools used by millions of people daily. Change can be good and necessary, and I certainly tend to resist it at first, but change also needs a good justification. Constancy and stability over time is one of the best features for a tool to have.

Canceled my accessibility meeting today because, I’m just really not in the mood to put pants on, and explain to a marketing executive that, no actually, your dog shit accessibility toolbar solution doesn’t work and here is 90 reasons why. They tried to follow up and say, it’s only just a few pages, bullshit. but I just really don’t have the patience and I looked at their website, which was designed using Shopify, and they need a new theme but they don’t want to install the accessible theme I pointed them to. They said, but we really need someone to review our website for accessibility, and I can’t express how much I hate doing work like this. Makes me want to retire from freelancing early because this is ridiculous. I’ve seen their website. It’s a giant e-commerce website with over 300 links, and they use AccessiBe. I’m perfectly happy in my nice warm bed, writing a romance scene where a protagonist and a love interest share a cookie together. #Rant

Those forward and back buttons on the side of the mouse work for navigation in many apps, for example in Firefox, Thunderbird, Nautilus. When using impress it would make a lot of sense let them switch through slides in presentation and editing mode.

Every year around this time, I start tuning into the various #Christmas Music #radio options I have access to. This year, at least for background listening, it seems like Apple Music's Holiday Hits wins Christmas. Decent variety of styles and artists, the promos and transitions are good, and it's ad free. Then, of course, for more intentional listening, my playlist of tens of thousands of rarely played Christmas songs. Other options: iHeart has too many ads and not enough variety, sky.fm hasn't updated the Christmas offering in like 15 years, YouTube Music is just AI generated playlist slop, and all of the public #shoutcast streams I know of are either low sound quality, full of ads, or low variety. LiveOne, as every year, is a close second; good variety, few ads, and that radio sound I enjoy at Christmas. CBC Music and Stingray Music are also good, but unfortunately they have way too many different Christmas channels, resulting in not enough variety on each one, and too many choices for all day work day listening. Hey all you selfhosters and homelabbers. When you are in need of a new fancy domain, where du you get it und how much d you roughly pay for it monthly. Are there any tld's which are really cheap? I mean there really seem to be people out there collecting that stuff and i think that must be quite expensive when you collect exessively.
@homelab@fedigroups.social_de porkbun.com, it depends what you need. Some domains are cheap but don't have a good reputation for sending mails for example. And check at different providers, porkbun has generally good prices and a wide range of tlds but .me for example is way cheaper at cloudflare
Dirt-cheap or “free” TLDs are riddled with abuse and widely blocked (particularly for email). Get a domain from a legitimate provider in a real top level domain (your country domain, traditional .com, .org etc are some good ones. .xyz, .top or .io are some to avoid.)
Then hang subdomains off it for any services you need.

I used to have more domains but now I have one .com tld for serious stuff, and a .cc because it's just cheap for nothing yet, if then only private stuff. And .club for an eventual project with a friend, it was nicely short. Edit: Oh yeah and a .me I manage for someone at another provider.
the thing with the email is a good point, althought the project i think about wouldnt need a mailserver. But good to know that and to consider that in the future.
Inbound email isn’t a problem, but if you might ever want to send mail from the service (newsletters, support mail, password resets, employee / volunteer internal comms, sysadminy alert mail, anything) you can save future you a huge amount of pain by using a grown up domain for the project.

a podcaster I really like just said: if you think the background music is too loud, this podcast just isn't for you. And I'm close to tears. Before I realised headphones made it easier for me, I really struggled with listening to any podcast with background music. I often wondered if I could email creators if they can email me a version without music, but it never did. A few years ago I found a podcast about Long-Covid and it had two edits for every episode; with and without background sounds and sound effects. It made me go: thank goodness someone out there knows this is a need. I never saw a podcast like that ever again. Not everything has to be accessible I guess, and if you're a person creating a whole podcast by yourself in your garage you're probably really proud of all of it, and you hate the idea that someone doesn't like a part of it. That's valid. But I cannot watch any video or animation. My brain crashes when I try to read more than a hundred words with my eyes. Podcasts and audiobooks are my only entertainment. And I unsubscribe to a podcast because the sound editing makes me ill about once a week. If all the shows only say: 'if you're bothered by the sounds, this show isn't for you'. Then what is for me?

My partner is looking for something other than printed task lists to manage personal care attendants. We want to check "Empty laundry" one morning, then have it reset for the next morning's shift.
