Study on the Twitter Migration

Last year’s Twitter migration, where a large number of people decided to move to Mastodon, is an example of a giant collective behavioural change that people engaged in voluntarily. A new paper takes a look at how the collective coordination happened, and what can be learned as the drivers of such a collective action.

The authors (Lucia La Cava, Luca Maria Aiello, Andrea Tagarelli) show that Twitter communities migrated more quickly where:

• The social connections in the community are relatively sparse. There is a cost to severing a social connection, and in a tight-knit community the social cost of leaving is higher.
• Community members repeatedly post about their migration plans. The more people post with the #twittermigration hashtag, the more likely people are to follow up on the call.
• Language use that emphasises a shared identity and the exchanges factual knowledge. Cooperation in a community can be facilitated when discussions and conversations create a sense of belonging to the group.

Yes, twitter really did mockingly label the Canadian national broadcaster CBC as "69% Government-funded Media".

Similar broadcasters like the BBC and Australia's ABC surely have to follow CBC and stop using twitter, now that its toxic clown of an owner has shown what contempt he has for them.

If he is prepared to use his platform to paint childish graffiti on their accounts, I can't see why any serious entity would want to have anything to do with twitter.

Two things going on that may be related:

1) Mastodon new user count is up to about 1000 per hour for the last day. This is way up from the recent low hundreds.

2) Reddit r/Twitter is full of complaints that Twitter feeds are now not showing followed accounts, replaced by right wing politics and even porn.

The casualty is not the FediVerse. The casualty is the people who relied upon free-of-charge #Twitter, directly or indirectly, for everything from authentication to robot-posted pictures of possums. They've lost all of that.

If you go to spacekaren.sucks it is now a URL shortener that blocks the twitter user agent. While following a lot of people can populate your Home feed significantly, sometimes people (like me) end up boosting a lot and that can unexpectedly hinder your own experience.

So if you like someone's specific posts and don't want to follow their boosts, you can go to their profile under the [...] button, and select the "Hide boosts from account" button.

There is no algorithm on Mastodon. You have ownership and control over every filtering decision instead of some robot.
